Hi everyone! Just a reminder that if you accepted a seat at a school that you remove yourself from all other waitlists! This will provide some students the opportunity to attend/interview!

Keep in mind sometimes people will accept a seat at one school and then find out later that they got off the waitlist for another, which may be more favorable for one reason or another (such as their in-state or an otherwise cheaper option). So it may not be ideal for every student who has accepted a spot to immediately remove themselves from other waitlists.

That may be what was meant, but was not what was said, so I was just clarifying. It has been a misconception in the past that it is some requirement (whether actual or ethical) to remove oneself from other waitlists as soon as you accept a seat.

This is good advice in the case of interview waitlists, at K-State we had a couple people no-call no-show for their interviews, and if they had let admissions know at least a couple days in advance they could have called someone off the interview waitlist. As far as actual waitlists, meh, once the school starts calling people (which often isn't until after April 15th regardless), presumably if they reach someone who has already accepted a spot elsewhere (and didn't purposely leave themselves on the waitlist hoping to go there instead), they would politely decline and then the school would just move onto the next person. Even if they want to mull over their decision, generally people are only given a day or two to give an answer if they're offered a spot of the waitlist, so it wouldn't make much difference in the long run in terms of other people getting offers!

I used to think this (that people should immediately remove themselves), but my opinion has mellowed. It really doesn't make a difference in the long run because the vast, vast, vast majority of people would accept their acceptance in May, June, July, or August. There aren't enough people clogging up wait lists to say that person 3 is making it difficult for person 70.

Also, it’s really early in the game to be making this request. It’s only January. Some schools haven’t even started interviews yet. A lot of people probably don’t know where they’d want to commit to.

I was gonna say the same thing. Most waitlist movement doesn't even happen until after April 15th anyways, so posting now doesn't make sense (if that's still the deadline, I'm very out of touch now).

Anyways, I think interview waitlists are ridiculous. How many people could you possibly waitlist for an interview, only to give them a call for declines/no shows? It really can't be that many, can it? I'm thinking it would be like 30-50 people on the list, but maybe I'm horribly wrong. Generally speaking, most applicants don't decline interviews. It just doesn't seem practical to me. If you want that cushion, just interview these people anyways.

Yeah I never understood that system of not telling people they were interview wait listed and not sending out rejections earlier. They probably got frequent calls/emails asking what is going on.

Michigan State has a waitlist of 65 for their interviews, and it comes with a “you may only have a few days to prepare” disclaimer. I was #3 on the interview waitlist and was just emailed Monday that there is a spot for me to interview on MLK day. I can’t speak for the luck of those lower on the list.

Must be a relatively new thing, that didn't exist for MSU when I was applying. They've made so many changes to their admissions process in the last 10 years...

My point still stands, though. 65 people on a waitlist. When I interviewed at Michigan State, I was in a group of maybe 15-20 people, and they had like 2-3 total groups on just that one interview day. How hard would it be to add a handful of people to each group on each interview day and just interview these waitlisters anyways? It just seems silly to me.

Thanks! Yeah the interview waitlist is really short and they have like 6 interview days so there is probably room to just squish us all in but I think a lot of schools are doing them now. I'm pretty sure UF had one as well.
