DAT and GPA's, how would you not get an interview, given your essay didnt blow?

one of my friends had a 4.0 GPA, and she got denied from several schools, her DAT was above average too. The explanation - some schools look for a certain kind of charactar that may reflect through AADSAS application. Of course - she did get into her top choice!

I dont think you can judge a whole lot of character from a application. It would have to stink pretty bad in order to negate a 4.0, high dat stat.

there is a ton of inconsistency when it comes to this. Like has been said before... each year the applicant pool gets more competitive. Timing of your application comes into play (apparently if you had a 4.0 and 30's across the board on the DAT and discovered the cure for cancer and was captain of the peace corps, CASE wouldn't take you, they're full, sorry), and oy also have to consider the people looking at these applications every day. Maybe on the day they look at yours, they have already seen 75 white males with GPA's above 3.4 and DAT scores above 20 (above avergae stats). You won't look so good. there is nothing concrete or guaranteed when applying to dental schools.

If you had high numbers (gpa/DAT) but failed to have any dental related experience, this would hurt your chances also.

The number 1 answer would be....

Applying too late.

Lets not forget that i posed the question for and INTERVIEW invite, not acceptance.

maybe there is some dirt in your LORs that you don't know about?

After speaking with a ton of D-Students, it became very clear. Dental schools accept people as a package. Being a good Dentist requires a lot more than good grades and research. Granted, who am I? I am a lowly applicant just like you... So what do I know? But...

Did you see your ref letters? You should have waived your rights to view them. Whether or not your prof/dentist showed you is at their discretion.

Example: My dad is a dentist and a girl from her office begged for a dental school ref. Because she begged he wrote it for her, but it was sub-par. Not derogatory, just kind of half-ass. Why? She was a good assistant, but she lied a lot about being sick and stole from the office.

I am not saying that you are that person, however maybe your ref letters were "sub-par".
I choose my evaluators very carefully. Only professors and a dentist that I had close, personal relationships with. These professors know me professionally as a student by my work and my involvement with SGA and the community. They also knew me as a PERSON, outside of the classroom. What my interests are and my values. Essentially, I made it paramount to truly have a relationship with them. Hence, my ref letters are very personal to me. Yes, I waived my right, but in each case, without my prompting, they sent me a copy too... It really meant a lot to me.

Secondly, your essay may have been good, but was it great. You and I both know that every dental school in the country receives thousands of the same old "I want to be a dentist because I like helping people.." Blah, blah, BS, BS...

We (myself included) always forget that this is a package deal. You will get in somewhere... Because many schools look at grades and DAT and call it a day. But, like others have said, dental schools look for a specific person... and maybe you were not "their type"

This doesn't mean anything... Good/bad... Hey, I am not Harvard or UOP's type but I may be UF's or BU's who knows...

I wish you success in all of your endeavors.

Im not having any problems getting interviews (yet, too early to tell). Im not talking for myself right now. Im just thinking of things in general, like trying to figure out where i might be asked to interview. I figured that if i was above a schools avearge stats, what could hold me back from getting an interview?

My LOR's are glowing!! I got them from 2 profs i worked for, for at least a year and a prof that i got an A+ in his physics class. I have read 2 of the three and they are excellent.

Your stats are great. However, the schools you applied to are very very competitive....All of them! If you are hoping to get in this year, I personally would have applied to more private schools to increase my chances. You still have time....
