holding multiple, but not sure of a #1

I'm sure there are people who have an acceptance and are happy with it but waiting for post-interview results and/or the May 15 shuffle. There are a lot of different positions to be in.

I know poll are not 100% accurate to predict results as it represents very tiny part of global population (Here global population is around 15000 to 18000). It give you some kind of trend with lesser confidence level (higher margin of error). It will give some ballpark idea how waiting list/hold list will move?

Unfortunately for you, not everyone that applies to medical school and is holding acceptances participates in SDN polls.

yah. Im happy with my acceptances but still waiting on one interview decision and one post interview waitlist to move before i can 100% know where im going.

Wow the poll is heavily skewed. Interesting.

We will have interesting findings, if sample size go beyond 150 (n>1%)
Please bump this thread everyday and post link to other Thread so that more candidates vote in the poll

I'm surprised so many are holding multiple acceptances? Or maybe I'm just biased since I applied EDP. (It's not the death sentence SDN makes it out to be)

I dare say that most people's dream school is usually a reach school, and would probably only hear from them in March... (since if its a reach ure unlikely to get in there without being deferred, or top schools kinda wait till March too)

Also, there should be an option of holding multiple schools (n=1, n=2, n=3...) but none are your first choice... Then you will see how many schools each other individual is holding. I have a feeling that when you dont have your number 1 school yet you will probably be holding more schools. (Cuz u cant make up your mind)

Maybe SDNers are just superstars of the pre-med world.

Well of course. Some are such superstars in fact that they must come on SDN and start a thread about it. They are just too awesome to hold it in and risk a mental breakdown. I hope they find the help they need.

Well, some are just plain weirdos.

OP said something about waiting... so I think OP is waiting for a school...

I have multiple acceptances but I don't have a #1 school. My number #1 school is actually only based on location and so I dont have any other EXTREME preference for it....but then again, they haven't even interviewed me yet. I am very happy with the ones I have though!

It does seem that people who are in at their #1 schools should withdraw but they're probably on fin aid packages.

Wow. These numbers are crazy considering that average for the pool of applicants is only one acceptance. Only on SDN...

I wonder what a poll that asked 'How many acceptances do you have so far would look?' Probably pretty ridiculous.

Yeah, I know pretty crazy.

ha ur right. i think the MDapps page is even worse. I have yet to see anyone on there with an MCAT lower than mine.

Based on the numbers that many people have on SDN, I think if you checked mine out you'd find a lower MCAT score. lol. However, I'm not sharing mine on SDN just for privacy 🙂

I'm content with my acceptances, but if I got in off the waitlist(s) I'm on, I'd certainly have some tough decisions to make.

As of 1/28/10 8 am EST, we have 102 person responded the poll. Still it is less than 1% global pool.

1. Hats off to 19.16% people who decided where they are going and not holding any other acceptance. This is good for waiting people and medical schools.

2. 52.94% students have multiple acceptance but still waiting for their # 1 choice (My bad I should have more choice in this section but it's OK). For the benefit of others, it is advisable to hold best one or two choices until they get # 1 choice school.

3. Around 28% people have acceptance from their #1 choice school and still holding more than 1 acceptance of other schools. I congratulate fortunate people of this segment and humbly appeal them to release acceptance of other schools. Thousands of people are eagerly waiting and I know, each day is killer for them. This would be a real humanitarian work!!

Thanks

Not really. Most schools accept many more than the slots they have, as you know. So premeds holding multiple acceptances tells you nothing about YOUR chance of getting off the waitlist at any particular school.

It depend upon the school. Many schools have following policy for acceptance.

For example, class size of school is 150. Interview begins in October. They keep on accepting top students until 150 acceptance. Some students are withdrawing early. For example 70 students have withdraw by January. they will accept 70 more student. next month 100 student withdraw, they will accept 100 more students. At the end of the cycle they accepted 150 +70+100 =320
That doesn't mean school is accepting 320 student right away. They keep on expanding acceptance pool based on withdrawal rate.

If some one is from Ad Com, please have insight.

Personally, I think this poll would be more useful if the question was: "How many acceptances are you holding?" and choices like: 1, 2, 3, 4+, 1 but waiting on #1, 2 but waiting on #1, etc. Right now, you can't tell the difference between those waiting on a #1 and holding 4 acceptances and those waiting on a #1 but holding 1 acceptance.

I agree. But unfortunately, I can't change now.

i'm sorry, but this topic has been rehashed over and over again on SDN. though i do commend you for not revealing your motives until more than halfway down the first page of the thread 😛

no one is holding multiple spots to hurt you. people are waiting on money or other factors to become clear before they make a final decision. i feel like there's this assumption that people with multiple acceptances are sitting in a dark room going "mwa ha ha, how many can i collect," and plotting evil against other applicants. while there may be somebody out there who is just collecting acceptances because they can, i would venture a guess that the vast, vast, vast majority of people holding multiple spots are doing it because they *gasp* haven't made up their minds yet. we earned these acceptances, and we have every right to take until may 15th to make a final decision.

/rant. good luck to you.

I have multiple acceptances, but I'm not holding them at present... I'm only holding one acceptance (because I really didn't want to go to the other school except as a last resort). I'm waiting on a decision from my #1 school, and will drop my other acceptance in a heartbeat if I get into that school.

Holding two(UVA, UMD), waiting on post interview Wash U, Vandy, Iowa(Carver).

Only applied to 7 (Hopkins; no response, Michigan; file closed(nice way of saying rejection)

Thanks.
