I feel like I'm getting mixed answers to this question. Does anyone know what happens if you don't match into an AF residency? Do you:

A. get assigned a GMO tour
B. Get forced to find a civilian residency
C. Get offered the choice to go find a civilian residency

Also, does anyone know recent statistics of whether every specialty is filling these days and how many people are getting transitional year? And transitional year is not the same as GMO in the military right?

thanks

If you don't match, you'll get "transitional year, civilian deferral," which is a polite way of saying that you are on your own to find an internship in anything. The Air Force will not help you secure a PGY-1. You are on your own. You do not become a GMO until after you finish your internship.

The AF is refusing to release the stats, but the general consensus in past years is that 25% of medical students do not match and are forced into "transitional year" with many of them going on to become GMO's.

If you are an MS-IV and don't match, then you must find your own internship - like the above post says.

However, if you are currently in your intern year and "don't match". Then you can either become a GMO or Flight Doc. If you can, flight doc is much more appealing and kinda cool. You can finish out your time as a flight doc and get out to do whatever residency you desire or you could reapply to military GME for residency match after 2 or 3 years as a flight doc (where your chances of matching are increased due to your Flight Doc/operational time).

Good Luck
🙂

You could also apply for PGY-1 only through the military match as a backup if you don't match for yoru residency of choice. AD internships pay better and for the most part are pretty benign. Alot of them are solely located at civlian institutions. And this way you don't have to wait for a spot in the civlian match or scramble...

I agree that being a flight doc is kinda cool for 2-3 years depending on what type of squadron you're assigned to You pick up the medicine side quick and the admin side comes with time. And if you have even a small interest of flying you will have a good time. 4 years tends to wear on you though...
