If you had an acceptance from Rocky Vista and one From WVSOM....which one would you go to and why? I am intersted in doing internal medicine. Thank you guys for your help and thoughts.

Ask yourself where do you want to live for 4 years? Those are in two completely different parts of the country.

As a student in an inaugural class at another osteopathic school, I'd recommend WVSOM. I'm not worried about landing residencies or anything and I'm sure what I do in medical school will speak for itself, but there will be some hick-ups and kinks that will need to be worked out and addressed if you go to Rocky Vista. RV won't have a note-taking service set up or anything like that, and a lot of those things will probably be up and running at WV already.

That being said, it has made our class more of a cohesive unit as we've learned to work together very well (there's zero competition, everyone wants to help everyone) and we have been able to have a strong voice in the way things were set up for us.

WVSOM is ranked as one of the best primary care schools in the country including MD and DO schools. Pretty easy decision considering RV is brand new and also has a stigma attached to it.

WVSOM will offer more opportunities seeing as it is established and RV is not. Plus there have been students graduating from WVSOM for years now being placed into great residencies. This is an easy choice unless you are from Colorado and your family is all near by. Tuitions are comparable as well.

WVSOM ALL THE WAY. I interviewed there, and I think the school is great. You should read my earlier post for WVSOM.

I think that almost everyone is going to say WV over RVU because of the stigma attached to RVU at the moment. In the future this could be different, but right now I feel as if the opinion is going to be WV without a doubt.

Rocky Vista. They have a great tradition, and the facilities are second-to-none.

WVU....reputation.

Honestly? If I were choosing between the two I would choose RVU. I know the "right" answer is WVU but I just don't think I could stand living in such a rural location.

The library is not a rural location, but it is where you will live.

You won't have time to do anything once you're in medical school, and Lewisburg is not as rural people think it is. It has a little bit of everything, even a Walmart. On a second thought, you should go to RVU and leave a spot for a person who wants to go WVSOM.

You'll have a hard time convincing me it's not as rural as I've heard or think it is. Plus I won't be spending all my time in the library and my surroundings are very important to me. It's important to have things to do outside of school and we're not very outdoorsy.

LOL...man, if only the OP had the option of GA-PCOM - everything would be a breeze!

With regard to TTs comments, the latter is indeed true and the former will merely be a component of time. That said, it would take a certain type of individual to be able to handle the inaugural class at any new school.

I'd also second EEL08's comments as per usual. 😀 WVSOM is not for everyone but it's a darn good school. 👍

Taking into consideration the OP's past posts, I'd recommend WVSOM wholeheartedly.

You can get federal loans at WVSOM. RVU will be private loans only until they're fully accredited - anywhere from 2-4 years (i'm not exactly sure, but I think they aren't accredited and eligible for federal loan funds until they graduate their first class).

so even though I'm from Colorado, I'd have to go with WVSOM based purely on financial reasons.

I 😍 Colorado, but I would choose WVSOM without a doubt. The unknown of a new school, the for-profit status, the stigma, no federal loans....I wouldn't choose RVU. And with an interest in primary care...you can't go wrong with WVSOM!

I heard the Irish Pub is off the Hizzle for Chizzle my Nizzle.

Yeah I researched this and because RVU is for profit the government requires at least 2 years before they will provide federal aid. Other new schools which are non-profit however are eligible within 6 months time.

...you do realize that WVSOM is right next to Greenbriar right? And that if you go right off campus there's something that strongly resembles a town, with stores and places to eat and everything....

I mean, yeah it's not like living in the center of NYC...but it's hardly in the middle of nowhere.

I'm not asking for NYC. I think that would be too much for me. I've been living in a larger area for 7 years now and since I've never heard of Greenbriar, WV I'm guessing it's really really far from being a bustling metropolis.

I bet that the school receives a disproportionately large number of applications from Texas A&M students. Or at least they will once they see this picture.

For those of you who don't know, Texas A&M is the ******ed little brother of my alma mater, and people who go there **** sheep.

Oh...Wait. Reading the thread again...you haven't actually *been* to the school?

k.

carry on.

No I haven't been there. I can guarantee you I would think it's rural and would not want to live there. I have been told by several people that it is much more rural than DCOM. If that is incorrect then please let me know but I still stand by my second sentence. I have nothing against the school. I'm sure it's a great school and a great fit for a lot of people. The OP asked which we would choose and I stated my opinion based on what I would choose not what the OP should choose.

That man's smile + those socks + a herd of innocent sheep = bestiality !!

you hear the same thing at EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL. enough, spill the truth.

I am pretty sure you already have some preconceived notions about both schools already and heard some of the things being said on this forum and else where. Ultimately, I am sure you know this, just pick a school which you are most comfortable with. If you don't like the rural setting of WVSOM and tuition cost, which I think are the two big concerns about the school, then don't pick it. However, I don't think the cost should deter you from going to WVSOM since you're going to get professors that will be there in anatomy lab the night before an exam to help you or meet up with you to answer your questions. It is not a top 10 rural medicine school for both MD and DO schools for a reason. Plus, you are going to be using some really state-of-the-art technology that only a few osteopathic medical schools have such as human simulators that can dilate their pupils and have bowel sounds to name a few. If the rural setting concerns you, and you feel that you can not study well in that kind of environment, I say the hell with WVSOM and go with RVU. In the end, it's going to be your choice and your personal preference.

WVSOM is a great school. It's honestly a no-brainer. You will regret giving up a spot at WVSOM for RVU. I interviewed at WVSOM and loved it. It is rural, but the town is quaint, the people were nice, and there are many nice restaurants, bars, and a wal-mart on the edge of town.

All in all, WVSOM is established and this is your medical career. Don't gamble it on a school that is for-profit and canj't give you federal loans...especially when you have an excellent option in your WVSOM acceptance.

To go along the lines of the OP, if you had acceptances at KCUMB and UNECOM, where would you go and why?

Since I don't remember much about each school I would choose UNECOM based on location.

It's "to each his/her own", really. Shyrem might mention the pros of UNECOM and KCUMB might be something where Spiced can fill you in. I currently attend neither but I enjoyed visiting KCUMB and thought they had a good program.

Along the same lines, it takes a very capable and confident individual to attend a new, unproven school. Similarly, I enjoy sailing my leisure yacht - accompanied by a few interesting female companions, to Kodiak in order to wrestle grizzly bears at least twice a month and just prior to the qualifying chess tournament; my lifestyle and choices are not suited to everyone.

I must admit that this post was humorous.

Isn't WVSOM's tuition some obscene number?

Rocky Vista has to be a whole lot cheaper. Plus Boulder, CO is less than 40 minutes from Denver.

$49k just tuition.
