If you had won the powerball...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you had +$300 million, sure, you could be a Bollywood playback singer. No problem.

However, what would you spend the money on -- voice lessons?

Never would I venture near a voice teacher. The screechy, out-of-tune elegance of my lilting voice should be heard by millions around the globe, belting out beautiful classics like Munni Badnaam and Shut Up and Bounce, Baby, Bounce, accompanied by lots of irregularly banged drums and clanging sounds, background music so beloved by Bollywood songwriters.

No, I would spend my millions on a studio to capture the perfection of my singing and market it around the world. Your welcome, world. :meanie:

300 mil pays for a lot of golf in a lot of places. That's about all I can think about.

funny this is even a question. I would spend the money paying off undergrad loans then squirrel the rest away for medical school, huge weight off my shoulders.

This.

It would be pretty silly for a +$300 million lottery winner to go forth to practice medicine...mainly because, whatever argument in favor of the decision, it could be challenged (and likely defeated).

"I would practice in order to help society and my future patients!"

-- No, you could help society exponentially more by being a full-time philanthropist and letting one of the [equally qualified] other docs help your would-be future patients.

"I would practice for self-fulfillment, there is nothing else I would rather do!"

-- Really, young man/lady? Remind me, how long have you been practicing medicine to know that you would prefer nothing more? How many times have you tried every other possibility on earth in order to be certain that you don't prefer XYZ as a means to spend your time?

"I want to be a doctor still because then I can cure cancer!"

-- No. Just no.

...and then there is that little fact that you will be undoubedly jaded when every single patient tries to sue you for malpractice since it won't be a secret for long that their "doctor is worth +$300 million".

Come on, people. There is nothing wrong with being bright eyed and bushy tailed, but this is ridiculous.

So, no, I would not go forward with becoming a physician. However, I would send a big fat donation check (along with my withdraw letter) to my would-be medical school prob in the 5-10 million range. 🙂

Or maybe they want to do it for self fulfillment, despite the possibility that they may want to do other things.

The money would go into to shaping myself into the most god-like premed. I would fly to every natural disaster to volunteer as a first responder. I would buy wounded veterans some advanced robotic prosthetics. I would my pay 3rd world children very well for their hair, which I would then donate to American cancer patients as wigs. I'd hire a team of PhD's to personally tutor me towards a 45 MCAT.

I honestly have no idea what I'd do with that much money. There'd be lots of partying though, and a boat.

Definitely wouldn't go to medical school. Would probably get an MBA and start a nonprofit to do philanthropy work.

😕 How much do you think medical school costs?

Honestly, I don't know what I'd do. I wouldn't want to sit around all day, but I also wouldn't want the stresses of med school.

Solution: Play basketball until my knees give out... then play wheelchair basketball

Absolutely not.

I'd do absolutely nothing.

Physician is a job. If I have 600 million (spare me the tax talk), I'd see no need for a job.

If you want prestige--600 mil buys a lot.

People get caught up in doing something with their brain/proving they're smart. I feel like finding a way to never have to work is the definition of smart.

If you won the 600 million dollar powerball would you still go to medical school?

Yes.

I would also invest it, and try to live off of the interest. Then I would try to live a productive life doing something I love while making money. If I could make enough money and live off interest, I would then selectively donate money to fix systems and fund research, which in turn could help those who fall through the cracks, rather than giving money to individuals.

I know med school doesn't cost 300 million, but the only thing I'd love about winning the lottery was the thought that I would no longer have to stay up worrying about how much my combined med school/undergrad would cost me. Then I'd continue on with my life as if nothing had happened, well, maybe I'd take an exotic vacation at one point.

If that's the only thing you'd enjoy about winning 300 mil it's time to pump the brakes and reevaluate...

If invested properly, you annual earnings would still be in the millions.

600mill powerball is ~300mill cash on the spot.

Invested at a measly 1% thats still 3mill a year.

Yeah, I would go to medical school for fun as a hobby maybe.

And helping others maybe....but once that 300mil is invested I'm not touching it. Just gonna live off the earnings, and probably only a fraction of that, the rest is gonna be reinvested.

People who don't plan well spend all their winnings in less than a decade.

After weeks of doing nothing, I have changed my mind. I need SOME purpose day to day. Honestly after the first week of vacation, I'm bored with life.

Ehhh probably not.

This! I would most def still go to med school but if I was a millionaire I could just volunteer with doctors without borders until I ran out of money and had to go practice medicine for money. =(
I'd have to buy a house for my mom though and a hire a hot butler with green eyes. I promised when I was a kid.😀

Hiring hot help is a good idea.
