First, congrats to all you who are done with Step (s) I!!

Is there anything you would do differently if you could go back in time? How would you study? Would you concentrate less on 2nd year classes and more on boards from day one? This last one is something I've heard from a few people and I just wanted to see what everyone thought.

Thanks!

Buy a copy of First Aid or Step Up NOW. Become familiar with it...use it as you study for your MSII classes. Grab a copy of Pharmacology Recall and BRS Physiology and Pathology. Become familiar with the format of the review books by using them as a supplement to your course texts and notes...if you can use them in school when it comes time to study for COMLEX/USMLE you will be familiar with the books, you will have your own notes in there and you will feel less like you are trying to dig through mountains of material in a mere few weeks.

Oh, and try not to study the week leading up to the test. There is nothing you can learn 3 days before the test that will help you that much. At that point, relax. Also, don't to questions this late...any correct answer will give you false hopes and any wrong answer will panic you. The last week should be used for light review, looking at path and micro pictures, xrays, EKGs and maybe brushing up on high yield charts (OMM, nerves, bug-n-drug, etc).

Also, do as many questions as you can. There are a multitude of books an online resources. I did approximately 3000 questions. Each source was different and my averages ranged from 40% correct to 65%+. I have no idea what was accurate, but the questions I saw on the real COMLEX were NOTHING like the "practice" exam on the NBOME website. I used usmleasy.com and found it to be comparable to the real test. Kaplan Q bank were also fairly similar from what I saw.

Of the 750 questions on COMLEX I had 2 repeat questions from somewhere in my studying...possibly from an old COMLEX review or something. But the themes were the same.

I can tell you, it is a relief to get the test over with. After the first book I felt like crap, then once book 4 was done I didn't care...life was good at that point. We had it at a hotel...I recommend a shot of Jameson during the lunch break from the hotel bar to calm the nerves. 😉

Thanks so much, JP--good suggestions.

I have First Aid, and have had it for a few months but I just really cracked it open for the first time yesterday before our micro test tomorrow and discovered it is a micro goldmine! It's great--I plan to have it near me at all times for the next year...

If I could go back in time I would study more molecular bio, and much less biochem. Biochem was not high yield for COMLEX or USMLE. And honestly after taking USMLE today, I would say definitely that the COMLEX was harder. The pharm, path, and micro were all harder. On USMLE, the molecular bio was way more detailed that First Aid. You had to know transcription and translation COLD. I didn't!! Pharm saved me I hope as it was easily 15-20% of the entire exam, and pretty easy. Behavioral was much easier on USMLE also and I would just pay close attention in the course, and you are set.

OMM was not a big deal either. I ditto JP about using board review books all year long. Plus, the Robbin's question book is all you need for path. You don't even have to do the questions again after each system. Doing them once made understanding Path easy later.

I also think USMLE is best taken a week or so after COMLEX so you can use a molecular high yield book to focus on. That was low yield for COMLEX. Bottom line...anyone who thinks DO's don't take a challenging board exam is flat out crazy!!!!

It's 10:45 am...are you finished yet??? 😍

I know you have been looking forward to this day for a long time! Congrats!!! 😍

So...do you now suggest that I have a copy of First Aid from day one big sis? 😉

aww...my little buddy is the best!

Yes, year one is over. I can't believe it. And yes, First Aid was a great little tool for Mechanisms of Disease and Pharm. The mnemonics are great, things are organized in ways I usually try to organize on my own (lists of similar bugs, or similar mechanisms for drugs, etc.). Yes--get First Aid and also get Step Up. Keep them by your side throughout year one just to remind yourself of what will be important to remember and what you need to FOR SURE know for tests--in addition to whatever inane minutiae the professor du jour sees fit to test you on.

Now, back to Cosmo and my margarita... 😉

Congrats LS!! You contribute a lot to this forum and I am happy to see you made it past the first year. Thanks for always being open minded and putting up with me 😉 I am looking forward to giving you guys some seriously high yield stuff at reviews next year!! Enjoy your short summer, and remember, when you come back, you guys are the smart guys that all the new 2008ers will look up to. Pass on the tradition whereby TCOM students are not a bunch of competitive back stabbers, but instead are there to help each other!

You are hereby an MS2, and you will never have to sit in Luibel again except for exams and boards!!!

i agree with whoever said to study molecular bio....also study cell bio....those topics are NOT covered well at all in first aid, and i (and quite a few people i talked to) said they did not feel prepared for all the cell and molecular bio that appeared on their tests.

i think that if i had studied those two subjects a lot more, i would have been able to answer a lot more of the questions on my test with confidence...

As far as study time goes, do you think 4 wks. (post MSII finals) is adequate? Would having an extra week make a big difference? Do you guys wish you had scheduled your exam for earlier or later than you took it?

I think 4 weeks max for the majority of people after 2nd year.

I had three weeks and burnt out the last week. I however studied 40 days during the last semester.

Limit your resources to what you can reasonably get through. You need to have FA memorized. Anything else is just icing on the cake.

First, thanks to EVERYONE on this forum for their insights on this exam; it helped me out A LOT!!!

I just took it yesterday, and I agree with most posters here.

I'd study more immunology--(interleukins and cytokines were mentioned a lot on my test)

More on second messengers and receptor types

Less on Biochem, believe it or not (just didn't have many straight biochem questions)

All in all, I didn't think it was too bad...but we'll have to see in a few weeks!

Thanks again, and good luck to the rest of you--if you prepared and did your work during the past 2 years, you'll do just fine.
