If you only take the AOBIM exam, can you sit for the ABIM sub-specialty exams for fellowship?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am sort of freaking out still. My fellowship starts tomorrow. I worry I will be put in a position where my PD will ask me, without forcing me to re-try and take the ABIM again next year (I did not register this year during my hospitalist year). I do not want to create any animosity, but I have 0% desire to go down that route and especially so if I am not obligated by any professional standards or societies. Any advice on information I should present if this comes up or how to navigate this delicate situation that I am certain will come up in the upcoming days/weeks?
You answered your own question above. You passed ABOIM. You're done. If asked (and I'm still not sure why you think your PD is going to GAF which board you passed) you answer as above and everyone moves on with their day.

I would be very surprised if you were asked this. The only time I was asked about this was from my employer and I just told them “I’m a D.O so we have our own board-equivalency exam” and it was no problem. I’m able to get credentialed all the same without any issues. Guarantee they probably don’t even know what AOBIM is and once you tell them they’ll probably respond “oh okay I didn’t know that” and move on with their lives.

What will you do if they ask you? Will you take it? If yes, then you already know what you'll do. Your only options are to either comply or create a bit of animosity.
