This was an interesting thread in the med forums that I thought I would steal the idea of.

So if you suddenly won the lottery, would you quit dental school and your pursuit to the dental profession??

For me, the deciding point would be the National Boards. If I already passed the Boards and entering clinics, I would probably stick with it, but since Im only done my freshman year......HELLZ YA......I'd be out in a nanosecond!! :hardy:

yep, i'd try to get every degree offered. I actually enjoy school for the most part.

Depends how much the lottery was that I won...If it were some insane amount like $100 million or more?, I might focus my energy on creating programs that teach people in need to help themselves. If it were more of a "normal" lotter amount I would most definitely continue on my path 🙂

At this point, since I havent even started, I would bail on the profession. I can sit here and act like dentistry is THAT important to me that I would continue regardless of my financial security, but Im not blowing smoke up anyones ass. I'd be out like a fat kid in dodgeball.

How much do you consider "normal"?

I think if I had 10 million in the bank right now, I'd be done with DSchool. Anything less, and I'd have to reconsider.

Sure would...because I love helping people who don't brush their teeth....psyche. Hell yah I'd be out playing golf and riding my bike....looking at teeth all day...lol.

Who said anything about practicing? I'd just finish the degree 🙂

Wel usually WA state lotto doesn't get above 5 million too often (at least the last time I was playing) 😛

I sure would!! Take care of those student loans too!!

Hey.. This thread would probably make a good poll! Is it too late to add one?

haha......for me, the answer would be yes i would still do it, just b/c after completing first year of dental school, i know this is the right profession for me. and i'd rather spend my life helping people than sitting on my butt all day doing nothing but counting my dough. however, i would transfer to nova since i could afford it, cause charleston, south carolina really sucks! what a ****hole this place is! also, i'd prolly work in a hospital instead of owning my own practice.

I would still finish school. My GPA and board score goals would drop off quite a bit though...

I'd get the degree. It would still be nice to have something constructive to do from 9 to 5, 3 days a week.

im with javadicavity. i'd still get a dgree. id probably have like a 25 hour a week practice.... and i might charge a very nominal fee for my service (enough to where i make maybe $30,000 a year). and if i ever got tired of it, i would retire.

I'd continue my degree but move somewhere awesome like the Caribbean or the South Pacific. Dive every morning and then offer free services to the islanders in afternoons. That would be the life.

I think I would still practice a little too after I finish school. To set up a practice and pay for school would take care of most of the first million . . . so it does matter how much the lottery winnings were.

I would probably do both combined degree programs (MBA and MPH) that they offer at my school as well. Maybe get a JD as well (I like school).

Once I were to go into practice I would do mostly pro-bono stuff.

How could you guys still work?

Shoot, I'd be at a country club all day sippin on some tropical drink. I'd also spend a good amount of time going all around the world. There is too much to see, therefore, no time to sit in an office and work.

I would quit dentistry/dental school if the amount of money gained from the lottery exceeded what I would make working for the next 27 years (Im 23, looking to retire at 60) as a specialty dentist.
Lets go ahead and say that after taxes, as a specialist, Im earning $400,000 a year. That is 10.8 Million dollars for 27 years of work (probably more with inflation, yada yada)
So I need to hit the 22 Million dollar Jackpot for me to call it quits.(Taxes, and lump sum fees would bring it down to about 10 Mil).

Theres lots of other "constructive" things you can find that occupy your time other than pulling teeth Javadi. 🙂 but I hear ya!

There are reasons why Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and other billionaires still work every day of the year--they love what they do (which in turn has garnered them billions of dollars).

I will still get a degree. Maybe I won't work as hard as I would have to. Money wasn't the only reason why I chose this profession.
I have pretty nice life style at this moment but I am still going to a dental school.

The money from lottery will only be an insurance for my future.

well, i seriously doubt after taxes you would earn 400,000 a year after taxes. 200,000 would be a lot more reasonable. and it isn't really fair to factor in inflation because your jackpot money invested would draw money. oh, and you are 37 years away from being 60, not 27 🙂

I would be out so fast---I would have to buy out my militarty contract somehow though--perhaps gain 100lbs drinking beer, and then they wouldnt want me1 😱

If I'd won a lottery, yep, I will keep dentistry as a "hobby". Work 1 day a week and then keep the other days for travelling and having fun... I've caught the travel bug lately. Plus, I would build myself my own recording studio in my basement!

WOw...Im suprised that so many people would stick with the profession.

You guys do realize that when I meant lottery, I meant hitting it big...where you wouldnt have to worry about working to earn money ever!!!
