Hello,

I am an officer for IFMSA-USA. There are so many med students who are interested in international health. But it can be tough to figure out where to turn to get more involved. IFMSA is a great place to start.

But what is IFMSA? The International Federation of Medical Students Association is based in Ferney-Voltaire CENEX, France. It's the largest medical student organization in the world. It was started in the 1950s, and now has over one million (I kid you not!) members worldwide.

What does IFMSA do? Exchanges. Pure and simple. We help students do either clinical or research exchanges between member countries. Med students generally spend 4 weeks doing a research or clinical project in places like Greece, Thailand, or France.

How much does it cost? There is a $150 application fee, a $50 refundable evaluation fee (that gets returned once students complete their exchange evaluations), and a $300-400 exchange fee. On average, $500 is what it costs.

What do I get? Outside of airfare, everything's covered. This includes room, board, a social program, and research project once you arrive in your home country. Compared to for-profit organizations, IFMSA is completely student-run, and is focused on reinvesting any money directly back into the program. Program officers are volunteers and med students just like you. We have seen the uniqueness of IFMSA first hand, and are involved because we want a career in international health.

Where do I learn more? Check out the IFMSA-USA Forum http://www.ifmsa-usa.org/forum/SMF/index.php and the IFMSA-USA Research database at http://www.ifmsa.net/public/searchredb.php.
