The point of clinical experience is to know whether you like being around patients and to see how different members of the health care team interact with each other. Being a patient yourself doesn't accomplish those. Plus, it's not fair to those of use that had to go out of our way every two weeks to go to the hospital and walk around for several hours.

i see okay. that makes sense thanks

Doesn't count as clinical experience but you can definitely write a hell of a Why Medicine? personal statement from it. Still gotta do volunteering/shadowing/scribing for the clinical experience tho.

Cool. Iv gotten clinical experience from shadowing, just wondering where to fit the patient side of it.
Makes sense though.
Man there are so many different fields of medicine. I feel like I get a different perspective each time.

Clinical experience and shadowing are two different activity categories on AMCAS

iv had a chronic health condition over the years and so have been a patient a lot. I have definitely learned things from the experience in terms of what kind of doctor I would want to be and what makes the biggest difference to me as a patient.
-also had a few smaller surgeries, wondering if these would count when listing clinical experience
no, sorry.

Yeah you can definitely talk about your own patient experience in your personal statement (which actually may be even better than clinical experience) but the actual clinical experience portion on AMCAS is for the non patient side. You'll have a very unique perspective that I think many AdComs will like

shadowing is shadowing
sorry im googling as well but would like to ask.
I volunteer in a non clinical setting and have shadowed.

I havent worked as a scribe or volunteered in a hospital before however. SO clinical experience would be volunteering in a clinical setting?

working or volunteering in a clinical setting which involves directly interacting wth patients.

Sitting at the Information Desk in a hospital is not a clinical experience.

oh ill take a look again.
i always thought shadowing counted as clinical experience.

Conveniently enough, I posted about this on another thread not two hours ago:
Nope, it's different. Clinical volunteering is a bit more formalized, as it's done through "official channels" in a hospital. It often includes direct contact with patients, but that's not an absolute requirement. In addition to being altruistic, it allows you to see how different pieces of the health system interact. UW has a page listing some of the typical duties of clinical volunteers: What Do Volunteers Do? | UW Medicine

Shadowing is often less formal, being arranged just with the physician you're shadowing. It allows you to see the physician's responsibilities and workflow. Shadowing is more observational. When I have students shadowing me, I explain my duties and clinical decision-making process, as well as some of the fun and not-so-fun aspects of my job.

Your school's pre-professional advisement center may have contacts to help facilitate both clinical volunteering and shadowing opportunities for you. Check it out!

Here to help. As I've advised others, consider a gap year if that's what you need to get your app as competitive as it can be. One year is actually very little time, and you'll get a forced gap year anyway if a sub-par app gets you rejected.

I see. if i start volunteering now, i plan to volunteer at a hospice from now until this spring.

i have a good amount of other volunteering that I have consistently done since college and after. i have shadowed but i know now that doesnt count.

if i started now at a hospice is that enough or is it too "last minute" to be significant?
