Just curious.

If an illegal immigrant wishes to pursue a medical career, would they have a disadvantage from other applicants? Let's say that they have a great GPA and a great MCAT score. Since the hospitals requires background checks, would it be impossible to gain hours from clinical work?

Yes, they apply as international which puts you in a whole different pool of applicants with very few available seats nationwide.

There are a couple ways this could work.

They could apply as an international student, which is very competitive. If accepted, they would need to return to their home country while the student visa is processed. This is unlikely, however, because international students generally pay full tuition (or even an international student price) and are not eligible for government loans. They tend to be wealthy, whereas undocumented immigrants tend to not have many financial resources.

If the undocumented student has DACA, they can legally attend medical school. DACA students also aren’t eligible for federal loans, so some schools give them a full ride. So, yes, in this case, students who do not have legal immigration status are allowed and even encouraged to attend medical school.

Being undocumented doesn’t go on your criminal history, so yes, they can pass a background check.

But how does one do a background check if you don't have a SSN or a green card?

No one said they don’t have an SSN.

When you’re approved for DACA, you take your work authorization paperwork and your foreign birth certificate or other ID to the social security office, and you get a social security number. When you’re approved for a student visa, you can apply for a social security number as part of the immigration process.

But anyways, most county-level background checks are performed with name, DOB, and address history. Criminal records can be found without the use of a SSN.

Do you not have a SSN? Or why are you asking this stuff?

Undocumented and in high school? .... or xenophobic and in high school?
Having questions about illegal immigrants is xenophobic now? Maybe he's concerned about legality, not country of origin. Maybe.

Getting loans will be an issue.

Just letting all of you know. This has nothing to do with me. Thank you all for calling me xenophobic even though that's not even close to what I asked.
