Here's the story (please bear with me): I was recently informed that in IL, anyone who got their pharm tech license after 2007 must become certified after two years. I received my license in March 2010 and renewed it this past March so it expires March 2012. I'm not working as a tech right now 🙁. I was told that I can't renew my license anymore, that I have to take the exam, and that I can only take the exam if a supervisor recommends me to take the exam or take an accredited class. Is all that true? I want to take the exam, but I don't meet those two conditions. I haven't been able to find a job, and I haven't found an accredited program (I've looked at my local colleges and online).

My questions:
1) Am I going to lose my license if I don't take the exam by March? If so, how can I get it back after March if I haven't found a job by then?
2) I may (crossing my fingers) get a volunteer position at a hospital pharmacy. Can a pharmacist or manager I volunteer with recommend me to take the exam? Or can I only get a recommendation from an employer I work with?

I'm in a similar situation. I am pretty sure that you can take the test anytime if you want to though. I don't believe that you have to do the 2 things you mentioned. I had my license but didn't renew it. Kicking myself in the butt for that because now I have to waste time calling to renew it. I planned on taking the test on my own, no accredited class, no supervisor stuff. I think that if you do have a job as a tech, they will oftentimes pay the fee for the test though. I'm not super familiar with the whole process though...just trying to help!

Hello Hapy,

1) You don't need a recommendation to take the PTCB/PTCE exam. You are free to take it any time you want to, provided you are ready for it....intellectually & financially (ie the exam fee). You can learn more about the exam here

2) Here are some links that will help clarify your questions about pharm tech license renewal steps/procedures in IL:

Good luck👍

Thanks, everyone, for the information!

Hmm. I had to submit evidence that I had completed coursework related to the exam. This was through CVS... They didn't let me take the exam without it. But give it a shot. And the exam is a breeze. Good luck.

How to renew pharmacy technician license in the state of Illinois. My license expired on 31 March 2012.

In the same situation. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Call the IDPR. I did self study but have volunteered at a hospital pharmacy, and the PIC wrote me a letter.

Thanks for the info! I will try calling them! Did you need a tech license to volunteer at the hospital?
