Zurich

I am an IL resident applying for the 04 cycle. I have applied to UIC, SIU, Marquette, UNLV, Arizona, UoP, and UNC. So far, just one interview at UNC on 10/18. Marquette visit on 11/17.

Tell me about yourself Zurich.

Openwyd,

I'm an illinois resident also, and applied to SIU, UIC, IU, Creighton, Marquette, Case Western, and Pittsburgh. I haven't heard much back from any of the schools, but i've completed everything (secondary included) from SIU, Creighton, and marquette. Are you just visiting marquette, or interviewing? Which part of illinois are you from?

Zurich,

I just have a visit/tour of Marquette. The way I understand it, they only interview in-state applicants. A dentist that I know that graduated from Marquette told me to try that. I really like Marquette and want to try to show them that I am interested and try to set myself apart. He said to request a tour of the school. Who knows. We'll see how it goes.

I am from Hillsboro, IL. It is about an hour south of Springfield. I went to undergrad at Illinois State University in Normal. I studied Kinesiology.

As far as secondaries go, I have only sent them to SIU, Marquette, UNC, and UNLV. This waiting game is driving me absolutely nuts though. I can't wait till it is over.

Let me know where you are from.

That's great, I am from Effingham and go to Indiana. I have a bunch of buddies at ISU, hell half my high school went there. I think i'm going to try and tour marquette and SIU. Honestly, I'd like to try and stay in-state for the tuition, but if I got into marquette or creighton, I'd be super interested in going there as well. What are your stats like, just curious. PM me if you'd like.

Anyone else from illinois?, don't be afraid.

Zurich,

I tried to PM you. I have never done it so I don't know if it went through though. Anyway, I am going to try to tour SIU too. I think the schools look highly upon that.

I had to explain where Hillsboro was thinking you are from the city. Nobody up there knows where it is. Effingham is pretty close though.

Anyway, my stats. There are very average. Average enough to make me friek out about this wait. My GPA was 3.3 overall, 3.2 science. I got an AA 18 and PA 19. While in school, I had many extracurriculars. I played on the University Golf team, I worked two jobs, and did lots of community service. I actually finished school in May of 02. I took a this time off to pursue a professional golf career. I moved to AZ and played professionally for a year. Very expensive and would probably take 8-10 years to make to the big tour. I decided to find a career and chose dentistry. I know my stats aren't that good, but I am hoping that they understand that I had my plate too full during undergrad and couldn't focuse 100% of my time on school. Also, with the time off, my DAT scores lagged behind. I couldn't believe how much I forgot. Anyway, let me know what your stats are too. Also, what you think my chances are. I really don't know.

openwyd,

I think you should get in to some schools, especially if you got an interview at unc allready. I sent you a pm.

Hey guys, another Illinois resident here from millstadt Illinois. I have aaplied to only one school which is SIU. I put all of my eggs in one basket and just hoping. I have a 3.4 overall and3.65 science.aking the DAT next month. I have been getting 19AA and 18PAT. What do you guys think of my chances? I'm not really sure how competative I really am. I live about 20 minutes from the school so if you have questions just ask.

Hey oncogene,

Your stats look real competetive for siu, especially your science gpa and i'm sure being from southern illinois doesn't hurt either. I got 20's on academic sections of the dat, and did about 18-19's on the pat (topscore). I scored very similar numbers on the real thing, so i would say you'll do great. I'd really like to go to siu, and am visiting on October 24th. Have you seen the clinic in east. saint louis, and have you considered applying to UIC? I'm a rural kid, so i would probably rather go to siu, but wouldn't mind chicago for four years either. PM me anytime, where did you go to high school??

oncogene,

I think zurich is right. You should have no worries about getting into SIU. Your GPA is very solid and sounds like you are right on track with the DAT. Good luck with your test and getting in.

Where is Millstadt?

your QR and RC is excellent.
But your PAT is kinda low.
I suggest you retake it if you are confident that you can make significant improvment.

I'm also from IL - I go to u of i in urbana-champaign. I applied to SIU, UIC, Indiana, Marquette, and New York. My GPA is a 3.6 (science a 3.5) but my DAT orgo was a 15, so I'm thinking about retaking it. Bio was a 17, chem 19, QR 24, RC 23, PAT 15. What do you guys think?

I would retake it, also. With your grades, bring up those 15's to 17's and you should be a shoe in. I got 20's on all the sciences, but have a lower gpa and you have pretty much the same list of schools I applied to.

ILL-INI

I'm currently a first year dental student at SIU-SDM. Do you guys have any questions about the program? How about any questions about the wonderful town of Alton, IL? lol

toothdoctor,

Hey, I have a bunch of questions for you. I will pm you.

I am a CA resident, and I applied to U of Illinois, Chicago. Do they only take residdents? I think i just wasted 50 dollars, but should i send the application fee and save another 40? =)

i am from the chicago area. i applied to uic, siu, bu, and nyu. i dont know if i am goign to get into either of the il schools because of my stats (3.35 GPA, and 19/18 DAT)

I know UIC only offers a few spots for out of state residents. But if you have super stats, then you never know. Where else did you apply??

Ha, I don't think it'll happen for me being that I'm a pretty average applicant... But, I applied to all CA schools except Loma Linda, UNLV, Boston, Harvard, Tufts, NYU, Columbia, Temple, and Illinois. In total there are 12 schools. I guess it can't hurt to try... =) Good luck with yours!!!

Hi, I'm an Illinois resident.
I applied to UIC, then a bunch of out of state schools (about 14 altogether.) I am not sure when UIC is going to be starting their interviewing process, but I really hope to get in there so that I can take advantage of that in-state tuition.

If you guys hear from UIC, let me know. I sent in my application fee and I think they have all my application materials.

Illinois REPRESENT! 🙂

AND GO CUBS!!

after you visit the facilities at UIC, you will instead be asking yourself why you wasted a plane ticket!

Jone,

What was so bad about UIC? I am an IL resident and dont know a whole lot about the school. Let me know some of the details of why you didn't like it. Thanks

Jone,

I'd like to hear about the clinics as well. I'm from illinois and UIC is one of my top schools..

Openwyde,

When do you go to siu again?

Zurich,
I have my interview at SIU this Wednesday. I will be sure to post my experience with it here.

I am getting more and more excited as it nears.

hi, im also an IL resident and i go to SIU. im a sophmore, and im thinking about transferring this year. however, id like to apply to SIU-SDM. do you all think this that staying at SIU would be a better choice? Thanks 🙂

Sweet tooth,

I am not 100%sure on this subject. I do know that SIU-SDM offers a program that can actually get you accepted into their school as a sophomore undergrad. If your GPA is good and you can keep it there or improve it and do okay on the DAT, you will be accepted for sure. I do think that they may look down on transferring from SIU. I am sure you have your reasons for thinking about this. You just need to weigh your options and decide what is best. If it is a legitimate reason and your stats are sterling, they will have no choice but to accept you.

I don't know if I have helped you at all, but you should check into their early admittance program.

openwyd22,
thanks for the insight. i was afraid that transferring from siu would 'look bad' since im even from southern il. i do know of a few people that did skip their 4th yr and went straight to dental school, if that is an option for me, ill prob. stick around siu.
btw, how was your interview?

The facilities are just plain dirty and old -- both the pre-doc and the post-doc facilities. While MANY schools have recently or will soon be renovating, UIC would never cough up the money to do that... EVER (i've lived in chicago all my life, so i know the mentality of UIC's decision makers very well).

Other than that, the program is supposed to be decent.

In my opinion, SIU had very nice facilities, but the location might not suit most people's tastes.

Thanks Jone. I am glad to know what to expect when I go see it. So you already visited SIU as well? It sounded like it, I just wanted to make sure.

yeah, been to SIU too. nice little town, but i don't think i could spend 4 years there.

I was wondering how SIU's patient base is. I know they have the clinic in E. Saint Louis, but UIC, I'm assuming would have to have a ton of patients available since it is in the city. Can anyone comment on that??

This is in regards to the post on UIC and the chance of out of state applicants getting in.

I'm from Indiana and I'd love to go to UIC. I haven't applied because the stats pretty much tell me that because I'm from Indiana, my chances for getting accepted are zero. I called the school yesterday to set up an appt with the director of admissions at UIC, but I could only leave a message. I have always wanted to live in Illinoism, my family is from there, and that being the case, I really would like to attend UIC. Does anyone have any info about establishing residency for a year. Would that make me an instate applicant?

I am really not sure about the number of out of staters UIC admits into their program. I also don't really know about obtaining residency status. I have heard about some state schools doing this, but being an IL resident, I haven't really sought after that info. Try to contact a UIC student and ask them. Maybe try a post on the dental student forum and ask for any UIC students to respond. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

From what I've read UIC only admits a few students out of state each year. I'm not sure how the in-state residence works out, but I would guess you would have to live in the state for at least a year...good luck with the little five training 😉

Openwyd,

Went to SIU today and really enjoyed it. I think i'll be hard pressed not to go there, if i get in, I really like the small class size, and it seemed like they do a very good job at producing gp's. Liked the clinic, and everyone was very friendly. Not sure about the town of alton. They said most of the students live in the houses around the campus, but some parts of Alton seemed a little run down. Oh well, can't beat the price.

Another IL resident here...

I too am looking into UIC and SIU... UIC is a lot closer to me so I will (hopefully) be heading up to check it out soon...

Anyone else check out both UIC and SIU, I'm interested in your opinions? When I have toured them both I'll report back here...

Great thread. I called UIC today, looks like they don't start interviewing until December! I have never spoken with anyone at the school though, they just run you around a message machine that eventually gives a url address to check out if you have any questions. Seems a little bush-league to me. Does anyone know why they interview so late, I'd like to have my decision made by christmas as to where I'm going.

Zurich5,

I thought that was when they began interviewing. I have no idea why they do it that way. It is the only school I have heard of that does this. Maybe they like to accept their students on the spot. Since it is after Dec. 1. They can. I have no idea. Let me know if you get an invite for interview. Based on your stats and your southern IL location, you should have no problem getting an interview and accepted.

hey guys,
i just had a question regarding admission policies of siu and uic. is it true that uic tends to favor northern IL aplicants and siu tends to favor souther IL applicants? what was the average dat and gpa of each school? thanks guys.

mo

As a legal matter, I don't believe there's any way the two schools can legally discriminate among in-state applicants. They both receive tax revenue from taxpayers statewide, so they'd be required to extend the same benefits to anyone from Illinois, regardless of location.

Bill is right, but I know that SIU heavily favors residents from southern Illinois, it is in their mission statement, and the med school is the same way. I've never heard of UIC favoring chicago applicants though, but this may be the case.

according to the student who gave me an SIU tour, patient base is not a problem there. they have more patients than they can handle. also, the school screens patients very carefully, and will reject patients if they feel they could be a problem.

a friend of mine from UIC expressed her displeasure in the patient base there. i vaguely remember her telling me that patients would not show up because they can't pay, and students would have to bribe (offer to pay for their expenses) them to come in. exaggeration? who knows... i guess those of us who end up going there will find out.

Ouch, I'm guessing that you have to schedule your own patients too?

I am an undergrad student right now at UIC and I've applied to UIC, Marquette, SIU, Detroit Mercy, UMich, BU and Iowa. I can tell everyone with confidence that UIC hardly ever accepts out of state residents. I think the entering class of 2003 had one. Also, Marquette will be sending out acceptance/rejection/wait list letters around early December. UIC will send out interview letters around late November to early December. They also do their interviews in waves, so it could be later than this. They look through all the applications and give best applicants interviews in the first wave, then they look through them agian and give out interviews to the next best qualified in the second wave. They do this process 3-4 times. If you get an interview though you have about an 80% chance of getting in.

My stats
GPA 3.4 science-3.4
DAT: AA-22/PAT-19/TS-22/RC-25/QR-19

If anyone is a third or fourth year student at UIC Dental School and can provide some insight into what the clinical experience is like, please do share. I am very interested in hearing about it!

Thanks.

Bump, has anyone heard from UIC yet? I've called a few times and they're hard to speak to.

I spoke with UIC about a week or so ago. Nothing new, exept that they might be a little bit behind schedule. They originally told me that early in December the first wave of interviews would be sent out, but it might be slightly later than that.

Did anyone else hear from SIU?? A couple of my friends got in, and I'm leaning towards going there. I would probably live in St. Louis though. I've talked to a few dr's and some students at UIC and they don't have the best things to say.
