Hi so I am having trouble with the supplemental essay for Illinois, and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas how to go about writing this thing? I'm just not sure what kind of essay they are looking for.....like am I suppose to do research on this topic? Because they give us a whole page to write, and I just am not sure how much I can say about this topic in order to make it sound professional and well thought out. If anyone has some helpful tips or layouts for this I would really appreciate the help! And good luck to everyone in the middle of the application process right now! 🙂

I did some research on the topic but could not find very much recent information. I think they are most worried about your view on the use of live animals in the development of new drugs. I have been putting this essay off but think I will sit down and write it this weekend.


Anyone else have any ideas?

Thanks for responding. Yah I have been putting it off too, but probably should write it this weekend. I just am worried about getting someone who reads it that disagrees with my view on it. I just don't want to say the wrong thing, but I also don't know how else new drugs could be developed without the use of animals and research to make sure they work properly.

The people who will be reading your essays aren't looking only for people who hold the same opinions on the topic as they do. It's more an exercise in making a convincing argument for whatever your view on the topic is. The people who will be giving you your interview won't have seen your essay anyways, so no one is going to be confronting you about what you've written.

Hi. I did a TON of research for my essay last cycle, and used many concrete examples in my essay to support the opinion I formed after doing the research.

If we do research, are we supposed to cite sources or anything?

If you don't have any experience working with research animals, I would suggest talking to any veterinarians or other people you may work with. Several of the doctors I shadow have worked with lab animals at one point or another in their careers and gave me some pretty good insight on what they were working on and how things in the field have changed over the years. Just a suggestion, though.
