Hello,

Ok, so I am almost 25 and I have finally decided that I am ready to pursue a career in medicine. I have wanted this since I was young, but life didn't pan out the way I had hoped. Now I am ready, but also scared that I am to late.
Backgroud: I have 3 years of university under my belt, all of which are spread among a couple different degrees. None of these majors were in the medical field. I guess my first concern is where to go from here.

I am really just hoping to get some advice as to the best route to take from where I am at now. I am sure there are a lot of people out there that will have very simple guidance, but at the moment for me it is overwhelming. I will get in touch with the guidance counselors at my university but I am hoping to get some guidance from outside sources.

I'm not to late am I? The thought of my dream being out of reach is just totally terrifying.

Thanks,

Lon

You are never too late. You're 25, and if you get the ball rolling, you can reach your goals sooner than you think. Let me first ask you, what are your GPAs for these degrees? Did you attend a community college or was it a traditional four-year school? The reason being is you might have a lot of your core classes completed and if so - that could save you a lot of time.

Second of all, are you going to be trying to work at all during this time point? If not, this will also save you time and allow you to get shadowing/research experience and other extracurricular's that can help you out with getting accepted.

Thirdly, remember that it's not only about GPA in science courses, but that you will also be having to take the MCAT as well. Realize that since you are not going to be traditional, you will need to find time towards the latter part of your degree to study and prepare. However, don't worry too much about that now, just realize what's in store.

Last but not least, let me reiterate, your dreams are NOT out of reach! Just make sure this is really the path you want to take!

You're still a baby, you've got plenty of time. My mentor started medical school in his 40s and I started premed when I was 28 [emoji106]

Just realize that from this point on, there are no do-overs. Do everything in your power to get As even if that means eating ramen, never seeing friends, hiring tutors, etc. I've seen too many younger folks go back to school and not take it seriously enough and then their dreams are gone all because they worked too many hours, socialized instead on studied, or just thought they could take the classes again. Now is the time to be the most selfish you've ever been and get that cheese [emoji893] (or grades in this case). The first test/quiz that you don't get an A on means you have to take action -- don't just think you'll do better on the next one. Again, read the forums and you'll find plenty of posts by people who messed up and now their dream is gone, don't let it happen to you.

Good luck [emoji256]

Too late? ???

Some of my all time best students have been in their 30s and 40s. I graduated a stellar one last year at 50!

I'm 31 and just finished 1st semester w/ 87% average in all of my classes. You're a young pup. Sometimes age gives you more discipline to grind through the suck of medical school.
