I have about 6 weeks of class/exams left, then I have 4 free weeks to study for step I... so hopefully I'm not down for the count yet.

I sat down today and knocked out 2 blocks of uworld in timed, random, all subjects mode and I only scored ~43.5%! Holy crap. Now I feel like I'm in trouble. I was hoping to hit maybe 55% (of course, this was a baseless, random guess).

I haven't done anything to prepare yet except read about 60 pages of first aid, and my plan is to just use FA, Goljan, and UW (since I'm short on time). I'm just an average student in my med school class, FWIW.

Do you think I still have time to pull out a great score (maybe 235+)?

I hope "lol" is good, haha

Basically, the question is can I get the job done in 10 weeks if I give it like 5 hours per day for the next 6 weeks, then maybe 12+ hours per day after that...

atleast, you're still pretty

Take an NBME and then use that score to gauge where you are. I would use the report to take time to make those weak areas stronger. UWorld is good to learn from but the percentages being used as the holy grail of predicting how you are going to do is overrated. Take a practice NBME! If you don't, I will be angry...you don't want to see me angry.

Should I take an NBME now or wait a couple weeks until I've completed a pass through first aid?

Thanks to others for the reassuring comments! (except Azadre, lol)

I wouldn't worry about it. I took NBME five after we finished classes and got a 209 (Hadn't been doing anything but class work till then) which I was pleased with. When I started studying the next day I averaged 50% on my next few Uworld blocks. Fast forward a week and a half and I am averaging 75% on my Uworld blocks. A lot of it seems to comes back pretty quickly. All the M3/M4 students I've talked to said they thought four weeks was plenty of time, and anything beyond that was overkill.

😱 75 * 2.3 + 84 = 257

is that the right calculation?

Don't use calculations, they are over-predictors unless it is an NBME score. Start with an NBME (5, 6, or 7) now it gives a good baseline. Take one when you are done with a second pass through FA.

Save NBME 7 for last.

Thanks for the suggestion; I took NBME 5 yesterday and as long as it wasn't WAY off, I'm happy with my starting point. I ended up with a 490 (=220). I bombed some stuff that I've never seen before (I have ~5wks of school left) and I got owned on anatomy as well.

I'm 4 days into studying and my test is 10.5 weeks out, with 4.5 weeks of dedicated study. What type of scores do you think might be possible in June? I'm curious as to the jump to expect in 2.5 months. Thanks!

edit: I could also use help identifying the best subjects to study. I want to hit my biggest weaknesses, but I want to focus on the topics that are more heavily emphasized on the test. I attached my performance profile.

5 hrs per day...? I'd more than double that if I were you.

man. youre set.. im screwed. just took NBME 5 and got a 390... cant believe how much i didnt remember..... 7 weeks til exam, 3 weeks of school left.

I think he still has school so unless he wants to fail his classes I don't think that's possible. I don't even see how he can spend 5 hours/day while still in classes.

Well, I don't go to class at all. To be honest, I'd say I haven't spent more than about 5-10 hours per week doing school stuff during second year, except for pulling ~70 hour work weeks right before blocks of exams lol (about 1 week out of every 6). I just can't bring myself to deal with that crap sometimes, so I just stay home and watch TV and stuff. Now I'm all about this test, and I've done ~12 hours per day for the past 5 days (I was on spring break).
