i'm bored, you're bored, so let's ADCOM!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know this isn't constructive but...

You need a life.

Definitely reject Applicant #3.

😉

hen, someone has too much time on their hands! 🙂

okay, I'll bite, but keep in mind that I only spent 2 seconds considering the options!

I would accept 2,3,5,7,8

It's hard since they all had great interviews. If that was the case I'd want to accept them all!

LOL, is OP like Applicant #3 (in real life)? 🙂

According to their mdapps link, yes. Also it looks like they went around mdapps stealing the stats/ecs of other people to generate this list of applicants.

did you pull all of these off of mdapps? if so, you should post the profile #s. I would like to see how they did in the app process.

yea i need a life (or at least an acceptance!) .. and let's just say 3 is my twin brother

I like 2,5,6,7,8.

I don't think it's a great idea to use mdapps profiles, though. Several of those people post here regularly.

I reject 1, 2, and 8. Reasoning?

1 doesn't stand out enough. Not a horrible applicant, but not a great one either. And since we are assuming that their interview performance is the same as everyone else, they didn't make it (not that they couldn't do well at our school, but other applicants have more to them).

2 and 8 aren't going to be coming to my school unless I'm an adcom at Harvard/JHU (which, statistically speaking 2 out of 126 is very, very small) or I throw money at them. My medical school needs to budget the resources it has. I'd rather give more students scholarships than have one on a free ride.

To be honest, OP you made it too easy compared to what actual adcoms had to deal with. Now if you made me have to pick 1 or 2 our of these 8, then you'd need to dig a little deeper and find out about these applicants.

Wow, that was fun! And now I feel sick thinking this is what adcoms might do... 🙁

i hope these are not real people you actually know because that would be really sketchy.

They might not mind, after all, many of them probably made an mdapps in order to get comments, so who knows.

3 5 6 7 8

Reasons:

Applicants 5-8 had steller numbers, and I wasn't hung up over their numbers, so it came down to the fact there EC's were amazing.

Between applicants 1-4, it was pretty hard. I rejected 1 on the basis that there EC's seemed a bit lacking compared to the others (notably the lack of Applicant 4 was hard to reject due to their circumstances and EC's, but the fact that they had a 27 MCAT was enough for me to reject them.

Choosing between applicant 2 and 3 was the big toss up. But I went with 3 because there EC's were a little better and most importantly they were In-State. 👍

i second this
I third that it was pulled from MDapps. However, there was a huge stink a few months ago after a regular poster's MDapps got posted to argue several controversial topics. I don't think we should be critiquing anyone in a public forum. If you want to comment them, then use their MDapps.

You may want to reread what you just thirded. I don't think you and he/she are on the same page.

The formatting for each applicant is different. It was most likely a cut and paste, especially since applicant 8 talks in the first person.

I highly doubt this stuff was made up but if the OP randomly picked 8 mdapps pages, they probably don't remember them anymore.

Funny thing is tho, this seems fun until you realize that adcoms are deciding people's fates here. Still, just ignore that feeling! 😛

That was completely different, however. And completely offensive. But I see your point. That other thread was horrible to read.

I fourth. I'll stop short of hitting the "report post" button or anything but if a mod is reading consider giving it a little hit of this before it gets worse:

This thread isn't so bad as long as you keep profile numbers out of it. But once you stick them in, in goes the lock.

Good point. I take back my request for the profile #s. But I only mentioned it because I can see all of these applicants as doing very well in the application cycle, and I was curious to see that success.

okay guys, I've been reading your concerns and have FIXED the original post to reflect changes that I hope are for the better .. please let me know if anything else is a major problem!

Perhaps, the OP can make a board game out of this! That would be a good idea indeed 🙂

How about this reasoning... Look @ OPs MDapps... Obvious

Seriously??? Am I the only person that checked OPs MDapps before making a hasty decision?? Come on guys

My school only admits people with a 35+ MCAT.

Nah, he's been talking about his 29T several times on other boards so that was an immediate red flag. Hopefully everyone else here noticed right away too.

I was being quite serious in my assessment. To be honest, does it really matter? I didn't know before but now that we do, doesn't matter anymore.

My school only admits people with a 35+ MCAT.

Apparently, your school is richer than my school.

i also identify myself in the OP now to prevent confusion .. have fun playing the GAME!

8 applicants to evaluate???.....😴

I change my mind, and candidate number 1's ECS are not good enough to make up for his mediocre stats. While candidate number 3 seems like a strong candidate, that 8 is not helping his case. Therefore I choose 2 because of his crazy stats and he is a minority, 4i have to reject because of the 29.

THe other candidates have good numbers and decent to good ECS

2,5,6,7, 8

Ok here are my picks:

#1: 39, 3.81, education phd
#2: 38, 3.73, football team captain
#3: 36, 3.70, dance team captain
#4: 37, 3.55, drug rehab clinic
#5: 32, 3.53, hiv lab
#6: 29, 3.73, 3 papers in ortho
#7: 27, 3.73, 4 papers

Reasons (solely my opinions, so don't get offended):

A. There is no excuse for a low MCAT score. So candidates who got under a 30 should have studied like hell and retaken the test. Not doing that shows a lack of commitment to me.

B. Higher GPA reflects persistence.

C. Leadership is something that is essential to being a good doctor. Also, football and dance tend to be team/group sports. Team-work is also essential to medicine.

D. Research experience is a good add-on. But thats all it is. Research teaches you the scientific method. Therefore, lots of papers means you are able to be a good researcher, not necessarily a good clinician. They don't make up for low GPA/low MCAT.

Honestly if you were to do a "mock ADCOM" think like this, you shoruld pick realistic numbers. Obviously, the ppl with the ridiculously High MCATs probably wont be applying or attending the same schools as those with the lower scores. A more realistic approach would be this for an average school.

1) 30, 3.5. Two years of research with a pub. EMT for 2 years.
2) 33, 3.9 No research, little shadowing, and sga president
3) 38, 3.2 Research with a pub, ER tech, club bball, founder of a club
4) 31, 3.8 Research no pub, Shadowing, EMS, president of a club, and work part time
5) 28, 3.7 Research, lots of clinical exposure, Big brother big sister
6) 36, 3.8 Research with a pub, CNA for 2 years, Other non clinical volunteering, but a DUI on there record.
7) 32, 3.8 research with a a couple presentations, EMT, shadowing, volunteer abroad, PResident of a couple clubs, chemistry award winner
8) 29T, 3.7 Ski Patrol, Research with 3 ortho pubs, some random award.

Assuming interviews and LORs are equal and you can accept 3, waitlist 3 and reject 2 what would it be?

Acceptances: 7 (with scholarship), 4, and 1.
Waitlist In descending order: 2 (not enough clinical experience but stats are worth a look), 8 (questionable MCAT), 3( that MCAt score is terrific),
Rejection: 6 (DUIS are terrible), 5 (sorry a 28 is too low for my school.

How would yall handle this?
