When medical school is concerned and people say rotations, does that mean school time from 9-5 or do the hours become like work or a residency where you could be on call for 24hrs.

both and everything in between.

as a 3rd-year student...

my worst non-call rotation: 3am to 5:30pm
my worst on-call rotation: 33 hours straight

my best non-call rotation: 9am to 1pm
my best on-call rotation: 24 hours

Ic....

How many times do 3rd and 4th Year students get called on to do rotations during a week?

I was checking Frieda Online and for some residencies and some specialites like pediatrics or psychiatry it says that they work an average of 40 hours a week with 2 days of 24 hour off duty period which means two days off basically.

But then the same specialites would have residencies requiring 60 hr work weeks at diffrent hospitals...why?

So then your third year and foruth year of medical school are just like residency.....

33 hours straight....thats so long. Why does frieda online say that 24 hours is the average on call duty for most specialites. Im guessing 33 was the worst and 24 the best and that there is an average in between.

Your on-call schedule depends on the clerkship and your team, every 3-4 days or not at all depending on how the rotation is set-up. So in short, yeah, it's like residency for whatever amount of time you're on the service. Call can be long, it depends on how fast you are when it comes to getting your pre-rounding and scut out of the way in the beginning and when your attending rounds the following day. You'll at the very least get 1 day off a week, but then again it depends on your team and service, my personal worst was 14 straight days on internal until a day off. Different hospitals have different call schedules, some have a night float which means a team/resident dedicated to only working nights for a specified time. Anyway you cut it, you kiss sitting on your ass from 8a-3p and free weekends goodbye when you hit the wards.
