This is my problem i need to take a pre req course, and i'm not able to go to a four year university due to family and work.Only option i have is a community college. The reason i say this is becuase of the late classes they offered at night. The school I want to go to is Lecom-Brandenton.I'm really good in science, but i don't want them to look down on me due to i went to a cc.She told me if i go to a cc that i would have to make all A's..The counselor also said that since I have a full time job with a wife and two kids that would explain why i was going to a two year college.I want to see what you guys think i can do regarding this, because i want to at least have a better chance at getting in this school.

Kick ass on your MCATS and they wont bother questing if you belong at their school 🙂

I dont think getting pre-reqs at a CC will hurt your chances at all. Especially since youre a non-traditional student applying later in life with a family. As well, DO schools are known to be much more lenient about things like this.

i need to take physic, but i would like to retake some classes to boost up my science gpa

took many of my prereqs at a CC. Things worked out fine for me 👍[/QUOT

what med school do you go to? and what pre req did you take???

Was accepted to..i think 6 (?) DO schools, 2 MD. I can't believe I started my appilcation over a year ago! Crazy

I'm off to PCOM-PA in August

It was so long ago....I know I took general biology, calc, maybe first semester of general physics (?) , and intro to genetics, but there could have been more.

I also have an associates in paramedic emergency medicine from a CC, I think that helped too

Good luck to you

I don't see anything disadvantaged about being non-traditional?

I agree

Just do what the other guy said: do well on the MCAT. If I had preformed poorly on that exam, who knows, maybe they would have questioned my CC GPA

But at the end of the day, the MCAT confimed that I knew my basic sciences. That's all they want

I really like DO schools because they're not only ok with non-trads like you and me, I felt they they actually prefer those with more life experience. So, you'll be ok as long as the MCAT's good

Take care

Never said non-trad was a disadvantage. I read the post too fast and came away with the only option for him/her was a CC due to some family situation...then again, I guess it would only be a disadvantage if going to a CC were truly frowned upon by medical schools. Of course some do think it's not a good idea, while others don't care.

I am a non trad, went to CC (not even close to all A's), had 2 full time/1part time job, and currently a 4th yr at LECOM, so it can be done...sorry you're getting fed a bunch of :bullcrap: did a "pre med advisor" tell you this verbal garbage? click on my name, I've got some postings regarding what they've told me and other students. just do well on your mcat/gpa, good LOR's, you'll be fine. feel free to PM me

it was somebody at lecom-b that told me this. i can't remember her name but if i'm not wrong i think she is the only admission counselor there. Also do you go to lecom-b??

Well when i was attending undergrad i was a single parent and i worked a full time and a part time job during this period. I just got married and we have another child.Does this sitution make me disadvantaged?????? I know this sound like a stupid question but what the different between disadvantaged, non tradational and regular applicant??? Also will they consider me that if i'm a minority "African -American"??? i want to do family practice and work with the undeserve population.....

Disadvantaged refers to your situation from age 0-18. It can mean a number of things such as: economic disadvantage growing up, living in a medically under-served community, education, raised by a single parent, were you the first to go to college from your family, etc...those were some of the criteria that an admissions officer gave me when we discussed disadvantaged status.

the diff is you get to check more boxes and write more essays on the applications! if you fit into those catagories/boxes...check them all. I don't know how much it'll help but it can't hurt your app. good lord, our admissions told you that??? we did have our admissions person leave last yr. and someone else is doing the job. both are female, we don't have students working in the office. for current students, interactions with the admin staff are minimal so i am not sure what's going on down there. either way, that was truly bad advice "someone" gave you.

because she had me feeling really bad, but thanks for the info. btw i will be pm you for info on the school

I completed most of my pre-reqs at a cc, the only ones I have left are orgo 1&2 and physics 2. I mean I never heard of anyone being frowned upon for taking their pre-reqs at a cc. I know a couple of people who actually did do it. Now I know a couple more by reading some of these people responses. The bottom line is have a good GPA, MCAT score and some LORs with ecs. Besides that you got nothing to worry about. Just knock that MCAT out that's the main thing.

Since DO schools are okay with cc classes what about MD schools????

Most MD schools don't care if you have CC credits, at least the ones to which I am applying say that. Check my MDapps if you want to see which ones those are.

The general rule of thumb is that a A in a course from a local community college won't hurt you but a D from a course taken at Harvard will. I actually know a guy who went to Harvard who got a D.

So I have been a Paramedic/Firefighter for 6 years and 2 years ago I finally took the leap of faith and went all in for medical school. I take the MCAT on July 17th and will be applying as soon as I get the results. BUT, I don't have the picture perfect grades. cgpa is 2.8 and science gpa is 3.4. I have what I think is a great personal statement and 5 strong LOR's from 3 DO's and 2 MD's, I recently spent a month in Africa volunteering in a medical clinic treating patients (I was actually registered in the Ghananian healthcare system and give a prescription pad and hospital rights.... but I was NOWHERE near a hospital haha). My question is how will the DO schools look at me? I am nervous as can be. I know I need to kill my MCAT and have an awesome interview, but do you think I will even get the interview?? Guess fulltime jobs (yes plural) may not have been the best choice during my undergrad.
