Sounds like you have a decent shot, my friend. Apply to a wide range of schools (including osteopathic schools) and you should get lucky.

Take care.

It was probably your MCAT that was holding you back. You should be fine this time around. You made a huge improvement. My numbers aren't so different from yours, and I'm just applying for the first time now. I sent secondaries to 17 schools so far, and will be sending four more next week. Apply to at least 15 schools, you should be fine.

you're mcat score is excellent and very competitive. the only thing that may be a liability is the gpa, but even that's not very far off at all. if you can take some more courses, as maybe part of a master's program, then you can get it up to about 3.5 overall... with that and your mcat score you will have a great shot at even the top 10 schools.. good luck ! 🙂

I agree that if you are in the market for more schooling, a master's is the way to go at this point since your ugrad GPA will not be screened out. However, keep in mind that graduate coursework does not figure into the ugrad overall GPA -- it is separate. So it won't raise your overall, it will be a separate entity. Good luck.

Apply to your state school. You should get in unless you are from California, Texas, or New York.

I think you have great numbers. I was in a similar situation, applied with a 26 MCAT and 3.45 overall GPA, excellent ECs; got one interview and was wait listed. I was really depressed, it was one of the lowest points in my life. BUT in the long run it just showed me how much I wanted to go to med school and I met my wife. So, I busted my ass again for the MCAT and worked on my application, applied to 15 schools two years later. I got interviews at 7 and wait listed at 6, accepted to 1. Not bad, I am now an MS1 at a school that really fits my personality. The entire ordeal made me a better and more focussed person. Hang in there, you have great numbers and it will only be a matter of time. Apply to many schools and get your applications in right away. Make sure you are on top of things and you will have a leg up on 50% of applicants.

would you really consider an osteopathic school??

Don't be depressed, I applied last year with a gpa and MCAT under yours. Write a good PS, and above all BE PATIENT! Interviews will come - don't pay attention to folks around here who already have 14 interviews at the top 14 med schools!

Actually, although the GPA is a little low for Cali state schools, the MCAT makes up for it. Additionally, Texas is the easiest state to get into, so I don't know why you flagged Texas as being more difficult. New York is average -- four public schools with pretty average stats, and an abundance of privates which offset the deluge of excellent candidates that would otherwise flood the SUNY's.

I would have considered osteo, but my goal is to go into a surgical speciality (i.e. vascular). I am aware that DO's can get surgical residencies, but it is harder compared to MD's from what I have found out.

Anyways, my point is, if you want to be a physician that practices internal medicine, as do most physician hopefuls, then DO route is perfectly legit.

Good luck and don't be so down, you'll do fine!

what about residencies that are DO specific... sure there are not a ton of the sub specialties, but there are only about 2000 TOTAL DO grads each year... which results in the competitiveness being very comparable...

you look pretty golden this time around; good job during the post-bac; where did you do the post-bac? higher gpa's look good at certain schools; regardless tho, 3.85 is good everywhere

You look pretty solid to me too. Especially with that high post-bac and VERY good MCAT. just be smart about where you apply and make sure you cover a broad range!

Good luck

I agree with everyone here. You've got pretty good stats. Just apply to a lot of schools and you should be fine.

Being a DO won't keep you out of Surgery or any other specialty (AOA or ACGME), but your board scores and grades might.

I think if you are a stellar DO you can have a good pool of residencies to choose from. But, if you take an average MD and average DO, then, I think for surgical specialties the MD would have a slight advantage. But, its all anecdotal since I have no hard evidence to prove this.
