I notice that the second website is called "MDsalaries"

If you look at "DOsalaries", you will see that osteopathic physicians are typically paid in beaver pelts and refined turquoise. And that's fine, because beaver pelts can be used to make many kinds of comfortable clothing, and turquoise can make for some absolutely breathtaking jewelry.

So that's why my FP was wearing a 'coon skin cap, I just thought he was a Davy Crockett fan. That makes me feel better.

I already have a dingy, poorly vented, overheated basement for the common folk to soften the pelts. They also make stellar hats. I also have a special room to keep the people suffering poisoned by mercury. Its pretty sweet. What can I say, I prefer the old school ways. The new chemicals since mercury just aren't as effective

You'll never be in the poor house. Things may shift around and will probably get worse before they get better, but every action has consequences. Lowering physician pay will have some too. I wouldn't worry too much about it yet. We're still pretty far removed from making true cash. Most of us are a little less than a decade away. Put it in that perspective. We could theoretically have two new presidents before many of us are done with our training.
 
2 Presidents away is a fair enough time to enact some meaningful and positive policy changes. It truly is in an interesting time to live in.
 
2 presidents away is also just enough time for things to get really bad by the time us pre meds graduate

Yea. I guess I wasn't very clear. I didn't mean sit on your arse and do nothing, but don't stress about the crap in either direction yet. If all else fails, I'll just move to some country that values my services. 😛
 
I think I should have actually made the Title: I'm Excited??

Our services will always be in demand especially now since most of the patients will be from the Baby Boom Era and the looming physician shortage. If they are going to cut our salary by 10%, it sounds logical that our tuition also be cut 10%. (it will probably be salary cut: 10%, tuition increase 40%)

I never was a big fan of Saved by the Bell though, but the clip was funny. Thanks TT.
 
Here is a fun exercise.

Utah has a law that all salary information for state employees is to be available to the public. That includes the hospital affiliated with the University of Utah.

So if you would like to see how much doctors of any specialty make in a university hospital setting, the information is available to you. The database is really slow though.

You can go here to look up doctors of a specialty:

http://healthcare.utah.edu/FindADoc/index.cfm

And then go here to look up their names and see how much they make:

http://www.utahsright.com/h_salaries.php
 
Thats pretty cool... I had no idea profs could make so much. In Oklahoma you can look up how much a persons house/property is worth by name, so you can see who is still a resident vs attending.:laugh:

I'm a medical student at the University of Utah. I am currently doing research with the Department of Orthopaedics. I know Dr. Smith and many of the Ortho surgeons well. Yes they do get reimbursed rather well, but you also have to understand that they are also involved in some of the leading developments in the orthopaedic surgery field. Some of that money comes through research development and many other arenas within the specialty. I guess what I am trying to say is that they work there butts off for it. They do more than the average Ortho surgeons. Personally, I would take the pay cut for some personal time, but thats me.

Yeah Utah is a great medical school. I is understandable that they would be involved in a great deal of research. I didn't even bother applying to the University of Utah even though I currently live in Utah because I knew I couldn't get in. I actually work in research park across the street(ish) from the orthopedic center.

You know, when I saw the thread "I'm excited" I must admit that I was a little disappointed after finding it's about salary. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with getting paid. But it's just not the source of my excitement.

I am, however, siked about this new adventure, meeting peers in what seems to be a great class, learning crazy new things, studying a cadaver, stretching my brain to its limits, putting what I learn to practice, having someone say, "Doctor, I need your assistance", and after looking around for a few moments realizing they're talking to me. 👍 ... I could go on and on.
 
Here is an excerpt from a conversation I had with my dad last night (on msn messenger).

Some background info. My sister is recently divorced and is living with our parents again along with her 3 year old. She is attending one of those unaccredited "arts" colleges to become an interior designer. When she is done she will have 70k(ish) in student loan debt.

Slim: It doesn't look like you guys are going to be getting rid of her anytime soon.

Dad: Yeah. She is already talking about what she wants in her room if we decide to buy a new house.

Slim: Yeah and I just don't see her making any money with that degree either. And all that student loan debt is going to be too much.

Dad: Hey well the same goes for you too.


So apparently my father thinks I won't be making any money with my degree. Well.... at least I won't have to worry about family asking me for handouts.

The beaver is the main reason why I am going to an osteopathic medical school. 👍

Some of those figures seem really weird. Like the optometrists making more than "Physicians and Surgeons, All Other".

Makes me wonder whether they are factoring in salaries for Residents and bringing everyone else down.

I matched the salaries with salarywizard.com and most of the specialty's were pretty close. Although the numbers might be a little different depending on location or cost of living. Radiology, Gastro, Cardio, Onco were off though by atleast 50-100K. I don't understand how the Total annual compensation is that much higher than Starting compensation for these specialties?
