I'm only 19, you must be surprise that i registre myself as a dental student but the french system is quiet difrent and we are admit in dental school only one year after we graduate from high school after that we cann't be kicked out.
Of course it's not easy to get in!
Anyway I would know about oral and maxillo surgery! I'm really interest about the six year programm!
I already know i need a DMD that i cann have with my university but for the residency i don't know. Is is ok when you are a foreign student?
They say Us permanent resident but how?
Any help is welcome
I know i have time (4 years before i get my dmd) but still the sooner the better right!
Thank you 🙂 🙂

ok before our moderator moves this to the intl forum, here's my advice to you...i guess you need plan on re-doing your dental education here (in the US or Quebec (french dominated state in Canada) and then apply to the OMFS programs...i guess without a US/Canadian degree, its almost impossible to apply to a US program..good luck!

Bonjour, mon ami! Je parle Francais un peu. Je apprende dans l'ecole de Dentale au Florida. Aussi, J'aime le OMFS et je crois c'est tres amusant! Bienvenue au SDN.

Alright, enough of my bad French! I'm not sure how many OMFS residencies are out there, but I have heard some programs do accept foreign dentists to train here. This topic was discussed awhile back, for all foreign dentists who train OMFS here in the US, they must return to their country after OMFS residency. This is not very common, I don't believe.

Traditional way, would be of course, come to dental school here in the US and earn your DDS/DMD (DMD preferred of course) and apply to OMFS programs. With this route, you'll have to worry about immigration issue and barriers since most OMFS programs do require their applicants to be at least a Permenant Resident (green card holder).

I know some Canadian who are graduates of US dental schools, at times some of them have trouble when applying to dental specialties due to their citizenship status.

Agree with the others. I believe there are some OMFS programs accepting international students. But after you graduate you can run into problems regarding obtaining a license to practice. If you have time, do dental school here. DDS/DMD - no difference between the two. Yes Quebec has I believe 3 or 4 dental schools. McGill University is there, which is an English school, and has a strong reputation. Best of luck.

I've been under the impression that the French had strong OMFS/craniofacial surgeons. Professionally, would there be an advantage for you to train in OMFS here?

DMD? Doctor of Medical Dentistry? What do you guys do for cavities? Apply healing emolients and elixirs? Do you run elaborate tests and then prescribe medicine for periodontal disease? Being a DDS (Doctor of Dental SURGERY) we drill it out, rip it out, scrape it off etc. I think we should scrap that DMD business... medical dentistry hmmmmm....dentistry is a surgical field by nature and history... medical dentistry hmmmmm. Freaking Harvard had to be difficult and come up with its own "chowder head" "better than thou" new degree :meanie: .

As for the frenchy and his desire to do OMFS. Doesn't France have OMFS programs? They should have some rich OMFS tradition with Tessier and LeFort etcetera. Why come here and take up our positions? Besides, a frenchy in a surgery program in the USA?...it would be like a "sublime, meek lowly bambi" in a pit of blood thirsty, half starved mosh pit of hyenas. "Like a lamb going to the slaughter". This program has a rich tradition of torturing Canadian (frenchies incognito) externs. What would we do with the real thing and not just a "maple leaf frenchy" but the real thing. WOW! You could make a video and sell it. I personally would spend $100 of my own dollars to buy a video called "Frenchy: 6 years in a malignant OMFS residency-the highlights of human abuse, hazing, and degredation". Now thats entertainment. I don't know if I am going to be able to sleep tonight.... 😴

But this reminds me of a good joke: How many Frenchies does it take to defend Paris?

Answer: Nobody knows...it's never been tried.

Mad at the French? Not me. The Frenchies have always been very nice to me (my job has taken me to the Paris / Versailles area a number of times). I have always had very good experiences - except with Taxi drivers (they tell you they'll take credit cards to pay for the fare and then they demand cash. One time I even hailed the cab with a credit card. The dude said "sure, no problem!!" - and then he wouldn't take it. What a bonehead!). Anyway, I look forward to going there again soon and this time I'll avoid taxis altogether.

About getting in, I'd call (or at least e-mail) some US schools to find out what their policies are for foreign students, and ask specifically how to get into their graduate program. Rules for foreigners getting into a DDS/DMD program may not necessarily be the same as they are for graduate programs. For example, if you are going for a graduate program in a private school (e.g. Penn), you go as a J-1 (required to return to your home country after graduation) and pay your own way (not ask for loans here since you have to be a Permanent Resident / US Citizen), then they may be receptive to your situation. You never know.

To find and read about schools in the US, go to:

www.dentalschools.com

This has (by state) all the accredited US dental schools. You can browse through the graduate programs they offer too.

My two cents. Good luck.

What's not to love about our country? What's not to hate about France? How can I keep verbally abusing you if you suck up like this? I talked to my program director and presented the hypothetical situation of accepting a Frenchie into our program. He listed a few requirements that one would have to do before, during, and after the residency.

#1 You would have to shave the arm pits and legs of as many french women as you possibly could-photodocumentation to prove it. No specific number but over a hundred would be excellent.

#2 Pee on the Eiffel Tower- if you are a gunner, peeing on all four legs would be excellent (Even better, peeing off the Eiffel Tower on some other frenchies)

#3 Remove that Jaque Chirac tattoo with 150 grit sandpaper and 70% rubbing alcohol

#4 When you arrive here, kiss the ground, lay down in the dirt face-down and do a snow/dirt angel (depending on the season) while simultaneously singing the Lee Greenwood song, "God Bless the USA"

#5 Submit yourself to diagnostic x-rays to see if you have heart, guts, and a back bone (in the event that you don't-which is very likely, due to your country of origin, we have on staff available a neurosurgeon to give you a spine, a CV surgeon to give you a heart, and a general surgeon to give you some guts.)

#6 When here, every morning get up at 5 am and sing the US national anthem and say the pledge of allegiance.

#7 Then after this, report to psychiatry for your morning electroconvulsive therapy treatments (to be administered using your fingers as a bite block and without a mask-general)

#8 Lastly upon completion, stay here in American, never returning to France again, never eat French Fries again, obstain from eating french bread, never buy French's mustard, run over all frog on the sidewalk or highway and sign the contract in which 50% of your income will return to the program coffers until the day you die

Good Luck, may the force be with you. :meanie:

  I can't stop laughing. I just hope tnerolf knows this is only good-natured ribbing. Sometimes it's hard to know when somebody is joking online - especially in a foreign language.

Stuff is just too funny

Alright, I'll mention one of these foreign grads --> OMFS stories. We had a Turkish student who got his DDS, and then came to the US and did an internship year of OMFS somewhere. After that, gained entrance as an IDP and finished out 3rd and 4th years of dental school to get his American DDS. Successfully got into a 4 year program (MD option) subsequently. This is probably the longest but most sure way to go for our French friend.

First thank you stanford fencer that helping me a lot.
Slavor i'm not sucking up don't get me wrong I love my cuontry I just feel more confortable in yours. Fortunately all amerian doesn't share your feeling about fench!
What is wrong with you?
Did a french women dumpt you?
As a french girl I have to stand up against this rumor we do shave!!!!
concerned peeing from the eiffel tower I have consider it very seriously but there is no french to soak. Actually there is only american and jap tourist around the eiffel tower! Lets be honnest it's too ugly. French have generally test we prefere other place in Paris much nicer and without tourist!
If you comm to paris I tour you 😉
And for "god bless america" YES if you sing the "marseillaise" and send me a tape
Your funny but not really helpfull good luck for the rest of your residency !

I don't know any jokes about Chirac tatoo!

There is no difference between DMD and DDS. They are both dental qualification. (The UK and the rest of the commonwealth award BDS which is DMD/DDS equivalent.)

If you want to do OMFS in the US while coming from France, you would have to jump over many many hurdles. I am in orthodontics residency and I have experienced the hurdles that you'd have to face as an international dentist. It's hard but once you've cleared them, then it's easy afterwards (well, relatively!!).

Here is what you need to do if you really want OMFS in the US.

1. Complete your dental school in France. (Where are you? Paris V?) Make sure you end up high in your class ranking and solid GPA.
2. Complete your US NBDE parts 1 and 2 with scores in the 90's for both.
3. Do 1 year of OMFS internship somewhere in the US. Ask around at each Dental School if they have one.
4. Apply OMFS thru PASS.
5. Complete your Diplomate examinations.
6. You can now either return to France or stay in the academic arena in the US. But if you want to practice in the community, you will need a US dental license. That's another whole lotta story to tell....

Unfortunately most US Medical Schools won't let you in through OMFS pathway because you are not a US citizen or permanent resident. So your best chances are with 4 year OMFS programs.

Bonne chance, mademoiselle!

word has it that Esclavo's wife has gotten wind of his assault on the french, and from what we hear she's gonna boot him to the couch if he keeps this up.

he probably would have been a little more sympathetic to u if u also were a stubby mexican like him.... hehehehe. Don't you worry. if you want to train in oral surgery in the USA u can find a way to do it. Afterall, Esclavo did (granted, all he had to do was swim the Rio Grande, and spend a few days hiding out in the desert.)

Thank's everybody
YES i'm in paris V wherer are you from?
What was the hardest?
Is it ok to try the USNBDE while you are still a student in france?
And last a stupid question I don't get what you call internship because in france "internat" is what you call residency?

IF I get everything I have to get married with an american citizen
So I'm posting this classified advertissments!
Who wants to marry me I'm blond; 1,74m ; blue eys ; 57 KG(don't know in pounds) and I cook quiet well!
If you are interested let me know!!!

More seriously I'm waiting for your answer or experiences about omf residenc 😉 y

Pole Vaulted....I can't swim. And yes when my wife saw my crude heartless treatment of the french lass, she made me feel guilty. I must apologize to the Parisian. Here all this time I thought my time in a mean surgical residency had slowly beat the humor/fun out of me... now I know it is just 8 years of marriage... 😀

People used to think that married men live longer. In reality they don't...it only seems that way.

Reminds me of that joke...
PT: Doc, I want you to make me live forever.
DR: OK, in order to do so, you have to quit smoking, quit drinking, and stop having sex.
PT: I'm not sure I follow you... how is that going to make me live longer?
DR: It won't, but it'll see like an eternity!

hello, what does the v in paris v stand for? thanks!

salut !

pour répondre à ta question, ce que tu veux faire, il y a un français qui l'a déja fait: son nom: Chawket Mannai.

Il a fait son programme de chirurgie buccale et maxillofaciale à UCLA

http://www.aaoms.org/surgothercountry.cfm?sysid=2184

Tu pourrais essayer de faire chirurgie maxillofaciale à l'Université Laval, à Québec, je crois qu'ils peuvent accepter des français

Short translation for our our american friends:

there is a french guy who was able to train at UCLA, in the eighties...

The V stands for five!

there are like a lot of Universities in Paris and they were numbered in roman numbers

thank you very much I'm gonna write to this guy who did it even if it was a long time ago.
Is your family from France because your name defintly is!
