I'm gonna give you some advice and hope this is not a horrible troll attempt. I don't know what you are going through but I know how fast things can go wrong. This is a very personal struggle and I would delve into it as much as you think you need to. I went through some issues and will be explaining it but not letting it be my focus. Hope all goes well and good luck on the application process. Best.

Hey man wish you the best of luck in everything. Definitely explain your situation on your application

Yes, your dreams are your dreams, your goals are your goals. What ever you had to endure on your journey to fullfill your dream should be known.

That is a disadvantage, that probably most of us here will never encounter, but you are able to grow and continue to do your dreams.

Ask for help, from your state, community, and school.

I think if you say you live in a shelter sounds better...people that are really homeless can not even afford to have a car!! Having a car is a luxury...

Yeah my car almost got repossessed. I want to go into a shelter but I can't focus like that for school, being around random people. Im stressed out beyond believe. My credit is bad, I'm a year behind on 4 credit cards. I have only $128.00 in my account. Im off of my schools wifi right now. I get financial aid but it only covers classes, food, and my car, plus insurance for the car. Im paying $200 in insurance, $ 256.00 for my car, $400 a month in food. my classes are $ 3,800 a semester with text books. Summer close to $,2500 and no financial aid for summer. I lost my girlfriend over this, she said she needs a man who can support her. Ive come so far just to give up. Im watching chads videos and i bought destroyer. Destroyer is taking too much of my time up. And it seems like memorization. I need at least an 18 or higher to get into dentals school. I feel that way I can get enough loans and join a NAVY scholarship program where they pay for everything and give me a stipen of $ 2,000 a month. As well as my entire tuition paid for. Any advice or suggestions ?

I don't mean to discourage you from pursuing dentistry, but it seems like you have more urgent problems than worrying about dental school admissions.
Have you considered the amount of money it takes to simply APPLY to dental schools, let alone pay for the tuition?

Taking the DAT alone is a couple of hundred dollars. If you apply to ten schools on AADSAS, that will cost you around $1000 + supplemental fee for each school (depends on the school, but around $70 for each school).
If you get interviews, you will have to pay for transportation and accommodation for the interview. Miscellaneous fees such as ordering transcripts, courier mailing your supplemental applications to each school, etc. also adds up.

This application cycle has cost me several thousand dollars. I strongly suggest you find yourself in more stable conditions before applying to dental school. I find your dedication admirable, and there's no doubt you've put in a lot of hard work. However, you need to take things one step at a time.

I'm sorry to hear this, man. I think the first thing you should do is take some of the stress out of the equation. Stress can load you down pretty bad and can effect pretty much every part of your life, especially the stress associated with professional school application. I know from personal experience that taking some of the stress out of your life helps you to reassess the situation and level things out. What you might want to do first is to put studying for the DAT and all dental school related stuff to the side for now. As bad as you might want to get into dental school I don't think it should be your top priority given your current situation. There will be plenty of time later on to study for the DAT and worry about applying to dental school however you might want to take some time right now to get back on your feet. You could probably go to one of the school counselors and talk to them about what is going on and maybe see if they have any advice to offer. Maybe look around campus to see if there are any on-campus jobs available as well or look in the paper, online, etc. to see if there are any part-time jobs available in the area as well. I know for some students working is not the best option given the workload and all but having a steady source of income, no matter how large or small, can definitely help out a lot. Also, look around for scholarships online and talk to someone at your schools financial aid office about your situation and see if they have any suggestions. I know here in GA you can pretty much go to school for next to nothing if you make less than a certain amount per year and I would think most if not all states would have something along those lines as well. Good luck with everything and be sure to keep your head up.

I'm really sorry to hear that man. Sounds like a very difficult time in your life and I hope you can get back on your feet. I agree with both posters above me with putting Dental school stuff aside for now and trying to get back on your feet. Applying is expensive and so are the books that you are buying for DAT. I would rather take that money and put efforts into finding a place to live. Can you ask any relatives/parents for any source of help at this point? Someone suggested a counselor and that would be great too as many schools offer this resource. I would also advise to not undertake any courses in the summer as financial aid does not cover them. Hope everything works out for you man. Best of luck.

Look I'm just going to take the DAT and apply in septemeber that way financial aid will kick in and help me out

Well it seems like you're pretty dead set on this, despite what others have been telling you to refinance stuff. Further things you can do is to apply for the Fee Assistance Program (FAP), which makes applying much cheaper...and I think you'll be a prime candidate for that anyways. Next, depending on your financial situation, try applying to schools that are closer to you so you can use your car to drive instead of flying. Then you'll have housing taken care of. Just keep in mind of gas prices.

Try doing EVERYTHING possible to ease your financial situation. Go to local churches, charities, friends, and families simply for financial help in the application process. Like, go in person, bring all of your papers, DAT scores, etc. to show how hard you work and how high (it better be high because nobody is going to give money to a lost cause) your scores/grades are. Work jobs as often as possible, budget like crazy. Don't ever go out, eat out, etc. Ideally the soonest would maybe be next year because it seems like you need your finances in order to some degree and right now, you yourself have said you're stressed beyond belief. Imagine how much more stress it would be to tack on applications and making time for that? One year won't be that big of a difference in the grand scheme of things and will help you get better grades, DAT scores, scholarships/donations and peace of mind.

Good ****ing luck man, I know not many people here know what it's like to be in your situation. I can't say I know yours too, but hopefully you'll be the next Pursuit to Happyness.

Hey, if this is real, I'm glad to ship you free DAT stuff (of course ONLY if you need them): Kaplan DAT Bluebook, AP Bio and some loose flash cards from KP.
PM me a shipping address (gym or any place that you buy foods). NO question ask. Let me know ASAP.

BTW, why not get a used Japanese car instead of doing payment of 256+200$ monthly? For 456$ amonth will get you a nice comfy play to lay down at night.

What's your status? Being homeless won't get you in. You need to have your gpa, dat, ec, and all other pre-dental goodies.

It takes a lot of money to get in. Test prep, DAT fee, application fees, travel expenses for interviews, these will add up to several thousand. What some ppl don't know is that it can be even more expense AFTER you get in. You may have to pay up to $3000 in deposit fees to secure your place in class. I spent hundreds getting immunizations, a physical, and a background check.

Fukking leaches everywhere. Until you make it in life, get used to being screwed at every turn.

You should consider getting a job or apply for school student loans as many of us do!!

AADSAS, supplemental fees, and traveling for interviews burned a hole in my pocket. I honestly can't imagine how you're going to finance all that given your dire situation. And even if you do manage to do all that and get accepted, you'll need to take out substantial amount of loans, loans (both federal grad plus and private) that will require a healthy credit score. You're in a big hole, and you're digging it deeper. Please reconsider.

The NAVY idea is good in your case.
Take the DAT no matter what if you can handle it. Then talk to a recruiter, if you achieved the desired score.

But before all, survive first.

Do you have any direct loans? You can take those out for the summer too, that may help at least get you on your feet. Take my advice with a grain of salt but I honestly disagree with putting your app off. If you think you can some how swing submitting your app (definitely apply for FAP and see if you can get some direct loans), and take the DAT, I say go for it. Like others have said, maybe just apply only to a couple schools within driving distance, etc. Also, getting a part-time job shouldn't hold you back, you can still attend school and apply, and it will help with your app fees.

As far as putting it on your app, I really don't know which way I lean on this. If you can spin this in a positive light, as in, despite your financial and personal troubles, you pursued and scored high on the DAT and maintained a good GPA (of course depending on what you do score, and I obviously don't know your GPA). Dental schools like to see that you've taken a negative situation and turned it into a positive one. Good luck, I hope things get better for you.

Since you're already considering military, I would do ROTC to get UG paid for, apply for dental school and if accepted get into the HPSP program. You can delay your AD requirement from ROTC until you graduate from dental school.

Dude, look into couch surfing. I was in a similar situation and payed like 200 bucks a month to crash on a couches for damn near 3 years. It was hard- particularly not having my own space, and studying and sleeping properly when people would be up at all hours of the night and whatnot. I put a little blurb about how rough my life had been in my PS, and was asked about it at two of three interviews. Got into both schools, so it certainly didn't hurt me. Good luck in any case. I know how rough it can be. You're gonna need it.

Id rather sleep in the car then deal with others. Its tough tho;isn't it?

Just dont write this down on your application.... I dont think is a challenge at all... You are homeless because you chose to.. You are a healthy individual that can work and live better...

You need adequate credit for grad-plus loans.
I have a bad credit but they said i can still get Grad Plus loans with a cosigner... Correct?

I got approved for half of my loans without credit check but the other half is about 46K which i need to get it by Grad plus loan and need credit check approval... That's all i know so far, Grad plus loans wont be available until July 1st so cannot apply yet..

You need to have all of your debts up to date when you apply for a Grad Plus loan. You don't need good credit, just no delinquent accounts.

If you have a cosigner you should definitely be fine. From what I've read, a lot of people get approved with pretty bad credit history. It's definitely not as difficult as getting an auto loan.

You should try to come back from that ASAP. You're going to have to at some point, for example if you want to get Grad PLUS loan...etc.

Regarding Grad PLUS loans:

What is a Graduate PLUS loan?
It's a federally guaranteed loan that can be used to cover the full costs of graduate school, including reasonable living costs.
Who can get Graduate PLUS loans?
Anyone who is a U.S. citizen, enrolled in a graduate program at least half time and has minimally acceptable credit is eligible. Some non-degree programs, such as some teacher certificate courses, do not qualify for PLUS loans. Students must first exhaust Stafford loan eligibility before getting a Grad PLUS loan.

How much can I borrow from the Graduate PLUS program?
Each year, you can borrow the full out-of-pocket cost of your graduate study. To calculate the maximum PLUS eligibility, take your program's annual cost of attendance – which includes tuition, fees, books and living costs – and subtract any financial aid such as tuition waivers, grants or Stafford loans.

How much do PLUS loans cost?
Interest rates on PLUS loans are now market-based, so they will fluctuate from year to year. Once the loan is issued, however, the rate is locked in. The PLUS loan interest rate is determined annually, using the interest rate on the 10-year Treasury note on June 1, plus 4.6 percent. Rates for PLUS loans are capped at 10.5 percent.

How do I get a PLUS loan?
Contact your graduate school and fill out a FAFSA.
Does everyone get approved for a Graduate PLUS?
No. The government rejects applicants who have had significant financial trouble – known as "adverse" credit – such as a recent bankruptcy or bills more than 90 days overdue. You can reapply if you can find a cosigner with good credit.
When do I have to start repaying my Graduate PLUS loan?
Technically, repayment starts after you receive the full amount of your loan, but payments are deferred while students are enrolled in school at least half time. That deferral ends six months after a student’s enrollment drops below half-time. No payments are required while a student qualifies for an in-school deferment. But the first monthly payment is due 45 days after the student drops below half-time enrollment.

What happens if I lose my job or get into other financial trouble?
You can call the Department of Education and ask to apply for deferral or forbearance, which allows you to skip some payments. But beware: The interest keeps building up, so you'll owe a lot more when you start repaying again.

What are the advantages of a Graduate PLUS loan?
PLUS loans have a fixed interest rate, so your payments won't rise if interest rates rise. They also offer free insurance, so the debt will be canceled if the student dies or becomes disabled. PLUS borrowers can also get their payments deferred if they get into financial trouble. PLUS loan holders are also eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness if they work at a nonprofit, in government, or at another qualifying organization. After 10 years of loan payments, any outstanding debt is forgiven.

What are the downsides of Graduate PLUS loans?
Unlike credit card debt and mortgages, which can be canceled if you file for bankruptcy, education loans of all types – federal and private – must be paid. Most bankruptcy courts will not cancel them unless your situation is extremely dire.

Credit Criteria
Credit approval is based on federally mandated criteria, not a credit score. In order to qualify, you must not have any of the following items on your credit report:
  • Any current delinquency of 90 days or more
  • Any of the following within the preceding five years of the date of the credit check: default, bankruptcy, discharge, foreclosure, repossession, tax lien, wage garnishment, write-off of a Title IV debt, open collection.
Recent changes in the law that governs the terms and conditions of Grad PLUS Loans establish a specific circumstance for certain Grad PLUS Loan applicants who would otherwise be considered to have an adverse credit history. Specifically, a Grad PLUS Loan applicant may qualify for a Grad PLUS Loan based on extenuating circumstances if the applicant:
  • Has been or is delinquent for 180 days or less on mortgage loan payments, or on medical bill payments for the applicant or the applicant's family, AND
  • Does not otherwise have an adverse credit history as determined in accordance with the federal regulations that apply to Grad PLUS Loan applicants.
Credit Approval
Credit approval is valid for 90 days. Your credit is evaluated every time you request a new loan unless you have had a credit decision within the preceding 90 days.

If you think you may have one or more of the items outlined in the credit requirements listed above you may want to obtain your credit report in advance of applying for a Grad PLUS Loan. You should work to correct negative items on your credit report as soon as possible.

Credit denial options include:

  • Applying for the loan with an endorser, which is a credit worthy loan cosigner
  • Correct any invalid information on your credit report and reapplying
  • Appeal the denial with Applicant Services (see above for contact information)
You can find more information here: https://studentaid.ed.gov/types/loans/plus

I'm sorry about your current situation and agree with other posters that you need to think about ensuring your health, safety, and financial matters are in order before proceeding to apply to dental school. I cannot imagine the hardship you're going through right now. I'm sure you can pull out of this, especially if you're able to work and go to school part-time as I and many others have done throughout our undergrad careers. Maybe that puts your specific plans off by one year but it's worth it to have a safe place to come home to and not worry about many of the things you're worrying about now. Put your health and safety first.

I'd rather shower reliably, have access to a kitchen, and put up with others, personally. But I can deal with a lot. Good luck bro.

despite the hype, martyrdom is not a virtue. not sure if an individual that exhibits this type of prioritization is fit for the health professions.

I have loans , they don't do much. I live in south florida rents $1200 for a studio.

Where in south florida are you currently located if you don't mind the asking?

rent is $1200 if you are looking for a 1 bd with granite counter tops, luxury gym and club house access and resort style beach entry pools and valet trash in south florida ( like Miami, fort lauderdale, miramar etc etc). even for $700 you can get those things (minus the real granite probably 🙄).

try looking for places in north Miami, or Miami shores. you can get a studio, or efficiency with private access for $500 or less if you aren't too picky. good luck! :luck:

I agree! There are a lot of studios for 500-600 in Miami- Fort Lauderdale, specially in the backyard of every cuban house! I'd recommend to apply asap for the FAP (fee assistance). They will cover the first 3 schools in your application. If u think u should go through all these and not take a break, then don't do it....and apply to NOVA tho...if u go to FIU u might have a chance there. Good luck!

No man, just stop. Your life is out of control at the moment and you won't survive any of the coming onslaught if you don't deal with the foundation of your life first.

Just stop, take a year off. Get a job and pay off your credit cards, save for the application process. If you don't get in to dental school during this one desperate attempt then you'll be exponentially worse off. Work, save money, then apply.

Ok thanks ill put this on my application.
I don't have good enough credit for a place.
Im going to sleep in the 24 hour library or my car and just shower at the gym. This way I can feed myself.
Don't worry about my life and how I'm living I just want to know about what to put on my application.
I will succeed regardless of the situation. I'm on my own in life with no support but myself. Im getting into dental school, bet that.

You can put down how determined you are about your goal while being homeless. Prepare to answer how you got to this point if this ever comes up at the interviews?

Talk to some non-profit fee free consumer credit repair folks. DS looks for people who are financially responsible as a sign of maturity. At the end of the day, dentistry is a business regardless. There are budgets to follow and resources to allocate.

Get a part time job at least and start fixing your debts/ save up for apps fees. How are you going to pay for applications and interview travels?

What are you doing with all these free times other than studying?

haha, dont write you are homeless on your app.. This will look extremely ridiculous!! sorry but its true.. We are NOT in a third world country!! Go get a job at Mc donalds or something, that for sure will look better on your application
Good luck

$20 a day multiplied by 30( a month) is $600 a month in food. Dude I'm homeless, theres no other way to explain it. A job? getting straight As is my job. soydentista how would you know that this would look ridiculous? Ive called several schools already and they told me to put it in my application under disadvantages. Having a job at mcdonalds and getting straight Cs does not look better. Its not a crime to be homeless, I got evicted from my apartment because I couldn't pay rent, no one will rent to me.

OK.. just don't make it sound too poor on your application and dont mention you have bad credit!!.. that is a BIG red flag..

You're saying you can't juggle having a job to support yourself AND do well in undergrad at the same time. We're saying there are applicants who can.

Good luck. Make sure you know what to say when they ask you why you're in a financially disadvantaged status ("for personal reasons" is not a good enough answer).

lets clear something up, this is in no way a meal ticket into dental school. My DAT and GPA are still a big part. Honestly dude I don't care who works how many hours and stays up all night off red bulls and only gets a hour sleep and still plus off As, I don't care. I'm putting homeless on my application. I can't get As and work at the same time so thats not what I'm going to do.

Then why'd ya ask?

I can't get As and work at the same time so thats not what I'm going to do.

You could if you took a part time load.

My concern would be if you could get student loans with your financial situation as it is. Who is going to lend to someone like you? You don't qualify for Grad PLUS and that's what we who are in medical/dental school take out.
