It has been over a month since I got my acceptance letter from USC, however I still can not believe it. I fear that they may have made a mistake and any day now I will receive a letter telling me so. I hope I'm not the only one feeling this way. Have any of you heard any incidents where the admission made a mistake and withdraws an acceptance?

Yes, and this seems to be a problem specifically at USC.

You could always show up the first day and say you never got that letter

Good luck!

I feel like that sometimes too, but then i just read my letter over and over again, especially the part where it says my name

I dont think they can take back your acceptance like that though unless you failed one of your classes or something. Really, I think they can be sued for emotional distress :scared:

No, you're not the only one feeling it, and for good reason. This seems to be quite a common problem, a matter which is currently under investigation by ACPE (American Council for Pharmacy Education). I think this shows the seriousness of the matter...

All I can say is that honestly, i'd be in a constant state of fear/anxiety if I had applied to USC and that was the school I was counting on.

And I mean the brutal part is when you show up for orientation and find out you're not on the class list, can you imagine the sheer humiliation?

God. Good luck man.

I'm worried because I mailed in my checked reply "Yes, I plan to attend UF in the Fall blah blah blah"... but what if they don't get my letter or it's lost on their side? Shouldn't I have gotten something else in the mail by now? What if I actually checked "No, I will not attend" by some completely *****ic accident? 😳

Yeah, I have. It's happened to a couple of people I know, plus others I've read online. The two people I know it happened to don't post here, and there wasn't a thread about it. However I can give you the story from my friend, he brought it up the other day actually as it's the acceptance time of the year again. Here's the email he sent me:

" I received the letter from USC around early march saying I had been accepted into the class of 2009, about a month after my interview. I was thrilled, it's a big school (700+students) and I couldn't wait to hit up the beaches of southern cali [he's an out of state applicant]. So the letter was official, had a signature from Pete Vanderveen (the dean) and I couldn't wait. I denied a few acceptances and was on a couple of waiting lists, but USC was my school. So anyway I show up to orientation in August and a secretary notices we have like 5 extra names present (you signed in) than were officially 'accounted for' on the computer. So this immediately sends a shocked secretary to grab to dean and talk to him in his office. Shortly after the 5 "extra" including myself were given a ridiculous "apology". It seemed the computer had mistakenly labelled denied applications as accepted, and letters were printed off and mailed without a confirmation ( double check ). So the bottom line was, we were pissed off and freaking out and the dean said there was nothing he could do and was 'deeply troubled' about the events. I got up and left."

Crazy eh?

that is the worst possible scenario i can ever think of ... if anything i would try to take some legal action, since the dean did sign it, i'm pretty sure if you get a good lawyer there might be something that can benefit from it, maybe like an acceptance in to the next year or something ... if you are really that worried, call them up, and ask if it is really true, talk to the dean, i highly doubt that he will ignore your honest concerns

kroscuh-

Southern Cal is turning into an absolute mess. Do you have a back up plan? What other schools have you been accepted to? I hear USN, UCSF, and UCSD are excellent schools and I have not heard of any problems from them. Hopefully, this won't happen to you and you can complete your dream of going to USC, but you never know. You could be part of that small minority. I also hear they have no problems cashing your acceptance check as well and then saying sorry too bad later on. This happened to a good buddy of mine.

This is what i would do: Call the dean and DEMAND he verbally tell you that you have been accepted to the school of pharmacy. If he denies this, that is saying a whole hell of a lot and I would look at my other options at that point.

I know this is a very difficult situation. I wish you the best of luck

Judging by your post, it sounds like you don't deal with stress very well. This is something that I do know for a fact that the interviewers look at. They want to see how a future pharmacist reacts to pressure. If this is how you react when you see/hear something you don't like, I can see you being part of that group with the accidental acceptance letters. I hope this isn't the case and that you were kidding.

i don't think he was kidding

I apologize if i sound offensive but i was looking through stickandstone's past offensive postings and couldnt help it but give him a piece of his own medicine. I have good temper and rarely get offended. But there are just some people that needs alil nudge to the head.

Yo, Requiem, was that guy from Ohio U? I think I went to high school with a guy in a similar situation. He's been trying to get into pharm school for a while now, sending apps to anyone that was on PharmCAS. I saw him at a pub back in my hometown over Xmas break and he was babbling on about how a school in Cali lied to him about his acceptance and how he had to buy out a lease he signed because he thought he would be living there or some crap like that. It would take an unbelievable ass that is really insecure with himself to conjure up a story like that about a respected institution. I didn't believe him at the time, although he always seemed like straight-arrow type of guy. I can't believe it may have merit!

I love this thread...

sorry to butt in, but i see some mistakes from this story.
1) how can the acceptance letter be signed by Pete Vanderveen when he is our new dean and barely came to USC in August 2005. If you friend was accepted to Class of 2009, the letter should either be signed by our previous dean, Dean Chan or by Dr Weisserman
2) we didn't really "sign in" during orientation, rather there are folders/name tags on a table and you find the one with your name and pick it up along w/ a bag of goodies. We were to wear our name tags for the whole week of orientation so we can know each other faster.
3) and how come i didn't see this scenario when i was also present?

I can't even begin to imagine what the OP or any other "accepted" USC student must be feeling right now

USC just emailed me and wrote "We are in the process of sorting out their acceptance letters" What the hell does that mean? I'm freaking out here!!!

are you serious??? this is for real? you're telling me this school had the balls to turn away 5ppl that they led on for months. if this has any merit, no wonder ppl look at the pharmacist profession w/ little respect when we've got ass-clowns workin the ropes up top.

Oooh, can you imagine the six-o'clock-news-worthy mayhem? I'm not a violent person, but they'd have to escort me from the building. :meanie:

Seriously, I can't imagine that happening. Is it a common thing with USC? How many class-action lawsuits have there been?

opening an extra 5 seats should be nothing to that school esp. if they did make this mistake. i cannot believe any person of authority or a school would torture pharmacy students like this. i mean this is most of our livelihoods right now (trying to get into pharmacy school).. it's a complete chaotic mess. i think the school should rethink their practices and address this awful situation.

Requiem and the others are lying. That kind of stuff never happens. If it did the school would be looking at a lawsuit. They would just make extra seats.

aren't pharmacy schools accredited for only a certain number of students? i can't imagine that it would be as easy as just allowing an additional five students into the class (although that does sound like the best solution since it is their fault)...

I have to agree with insipid on this one.

My sister is in the class of 2009 at USC. According to her, crazyrice is correct and there are a ton of holes in Requiem's story. Requiem is obviously just trying to stir up confusion and drama. Peter Vanderveen was not even officially made the Dean until the academic school year was well underway. Any acceptance letters for that year should have been signed by the previous dean, and it would obviously be impossible for Peter Vanderveen to have met with these 5 students and express his "deeply troubled" emotions. There was also no "signing in" at orientation. All the students that arrived were accounted for by orientation leaders using premade, individualized student orientation packets & name tags. My sister hung around the lobby waiting for a friend until after everyone had basically showed up. She says there was no drama of having "extra" students and having to turn them away. 🙄

USC is a fantastic school with a great curriculum and smart student body. Faculty there are very concerned about student satisfaction and it is very easy to develop close relationships to teachers and other students. The idea of "Trojan Pride" can sometimes be overplayed, but USC truly takes care of their own. I would've been more than happy going to USC if I hadn't gotten accepted into UCSD. Basically the only thing that UCSD had over USC (in my mind) was the cheaper tuition. Congrats to the OP for making it in. 👍 Go Trojans!

This thread just further confirms my beliefs that pharmacy students are completely incapable of understanding sarcasm, unable to extrapolate, and are literal to a fault. I thought this was just endemic to people in my class. Sadly, it's not.

Well hey there Einstein! Why would ACPE be looking into it if there wasn't a problem?!?

If the comment is also directed at me, I wouldn't judge all pharmacy students based on their responses to a written post on a public forum. 😉 It can be difficult to infer tone and intent based solely on written text without previous knowledge of a poster's background. That being said, I initially thought "this is a joke" but responded nonetheless because people in the thread were seriously freaking out. 🙂

hey kochun, who signed your acceptance letter?

Hey Kochun,

What makes you think that you wouldn't have been accepted? You could always call to confirm with the admissions office, do be nice to the admin. Don't worry so much, isn't it extremely unlikely that such an error would occur? LOL I would be celebrating rather than worrying 🙂

take care,

It was more of a general comment, sorry if you took it personally. It's a trend I've noticed here and in school and I think inference is an important skill to develop.

To the OP - I'm quite positive that there is no mistake in your acceptance. Congrats and hey, don't take all this pharm school stuff too seriously.

Koshun,

They're all f*cking with you... every thread is making me laugh. Recalling admissions with pharmacy school has never happened and will never happen... I think they're making fun of your insecurity. I hope you don't think they're serious.

You will have a GREAT time at USC! I promise. 😉

lol, when playing w/ ppl's futures, u can keep that f---in sarcasm to yourself. this is a text based forum, not some videoconferencing session where powers of 'inference' can be based on tonality. easy to say don't take this stuff too seriously when you're sitting comfortably in pharm school.

Unfortunately I went though this 3 times with USC in 2000, 2001 and 2003 (didn't try to apply in 2002). Each time I got that fat acceptance envelope and when I tried to attend the first classes they told me I wasn't supposed to be there because they had overbooked. It was heartbreaking.
