"I'm majoring in pre-med..."

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm always intrigued by people who get so annoyed about what other people are doing. It's such an insignificant thing that it shouldn't even matter. Who cares if other people revel in being pre-med? I can certainly understand feeling embarrassed for them if that's your thing, but to come onto an anonymous forum and write about how annoyed you are that they are so very delighted about the path they have chosen seems to be an annoying behavior of another sort.

Extra funny when people feel like they are showing fellow undergraduate students "the way the world works".

haha too true too true

As a non-trad who still looks young enough to be in college still (I haven't been out very long), I sometimes get to be part of these convos w/ UGs and it's always kind of funny, as someone who has worked post-college for awhile, to hear the rumors about "real life" that circulate. A lot of it has some basis in reality but is largely false. (I do usually bring up my own experiences at some pt in the convo, but often they're not aware I've graduated until I mention it.)

The point wasn't that the kid is enthusiastic about his path. We all should be enthusiastic about what we're doing.

The point was that he clearly doesn't understand what his path actually is since he declared himself a "Pre-Med major" to a doctor when he's attending a school that does not have a pre-med major. This means he either made up a major to look better or (more likely) he doesn't realize what his major is/should be and is a little confused. Both are equally embarrassing. We all say stupid things sometimes so I'm not saying he's below us. Rather, his actions were silly. If he sticks with it in a couple of years he'll be laughing at himself back then, just like the rest of us. Tis all in good fun.

I'm in a similar situation as you. I've see "the way the world works", and, very often, it's nothing like people who've never experienced it make it out to be (not that I'm implying anyone in this thread hasn't had life experience). It seems that most people use that statement to justify saying annoying and/or obnoxious things about other people. This forum has an interesting culture.

I understand. Sometimes, I think, people get so gung-ho about the process that they feel like they are "pre-med majors" even when their school doesn't have one. I don't necessarily think they're all just trying to be tools either (I don't think you were saying this, but I'm just echoing a sentiment I see around here a lot). I do certainly agree with you, though.

I would have called him out on it. But that's because I'm a jackass. But I really do feel undermined if I'm labeled as a pre-med, not because of myself, but because there is such a negative connotation to it that I'm not taken seriously.

I just say I'm majoring in Physiology with intent to go to Medical school. Even then I still get rolled eyes like, "Yeah, you and half your graduating class." And I don't blame them. I used to know a ton of "pre-meds" at the beginning of this semester. Already quite a few are considering a different profession like OT, Dental, etc.

I agree. Some, if not, the majority of UG students pursuing the pre-med track are often on this "fantasy auto-pilot," that they are so caught up in this dream of one day becoming a physician, they are blinded by everything else. I don't think it's a bad thing; though, it's not really healthy either. People grow, and will eventually find their calling... Just get over it.

It seems that this process almost requires quasi-religious devotion though, right?

why exactly do you feel embarrassed or amused by this guy claiming to be a premed major? Is it because there is no such thing? My University has a "PreMed" major, but everyone in their right mind knows that it is truly a Chemistry or Biology Degree... or in my case, will probably end up being both. Or is it because of the fad sense of the title? I ask so that I will not be scoffed at for saying something stupid.

Yeah brah, I'm a pre-med major. Jagerbombs!

Jeez, the title of this thread makes me cringe every time I see it.

Simply because saying you're premed anyways (let alone declaring it as your major (unless it actually is)) is very awkward and gunner-ish. For example, someone majoring in engineering will become an engineer when they graduate. Someone majoring in..."premed" will not necessarily get into medical school when all is said and done. Which is why it is best to just state what your real major is, and then say that you're interested in medical school (or dental school or wherever) instead of just outright declaring it.

So, in class the other day we had a speaker (a general surgeon) who had everyone in the room introduce themselves with their name and their major.

A freshman guy in the class introduced himself and said his major was: "PRE-MED FOR ANESTHESIOLOGY."

REALLY!?!? :smack:

I wasn't sure whether to laugh or slam my forehead into my desk.

I'm aware that some schools actually do have a pre-med major, but most (including mine) do not. I also found it interesting that this guy was somehow getting a head-start on his specialty of choice. 🙄

I thought others might find this as amusing/upsetting as I did. I'm sure the kid didn't know how absurd he sounded, but it gave me a chuckle.
