My name is Anna. I'm seventeen, and I'm going to be a dentist. I hope to attend MUSC (the Medical University of South Carolina) but right now I am in high school.

I was wondering if anyone has any advice for me, or if any dental or predental students wanted to be a mentor/penpal for me, to help me get ready to go to predental school in 2011 when I finish high school. I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Ya I have some advice. You're 17 don't worry about that and enjoy life right now. I am not trying to be a jerk I am being honest.

I understand what you mean, but my future is the most important thing right now, and I'm trying to have the best chance I can possibly have.

You're a first year dental student, right? What's it like?

We realize that. However, the truth is that there is nothing you can do right now except enjoy high school and obtain the highest marks possible to obtain entrance to the best university possible. There will be time to shadow, do research, and other thing later on. Trust me on this. Also, the above poster is a dental student. He/she was in your shoes at one time. Listen to him/her.

work on getting scholarships, most productive thing you can do now

Scholarships, ok. I can go to Guidance first thing in the morning and ask about that.
Thanks so much.

My biggest advice, having been in a similar position myself, is not to run around shouting "I'm going to be a dentist" all the time. Because in all honesty, you are not in a position of knowing what your chances will be of actually going to dental school. It is far more likely that you will change your goals or not get in. So, for now, just concentrate on getting into a good undergrad. Think about the dentistry thing occasionally, but don't talk about it all the time, it'll just bug people.

Little Dentist,

You have quite the road to travel. By your speech I would think you had nearly reached the destination. Small steps, small steps.
