I'm oficially in a residency program and I want to help

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello, hola!!!
It is so hard and time consuming and a fustrating process. that after reading post through this site. I can say that I'm done for now.
because your never really done.
I took TOEFL, GRE, NBDE I, II application process and I'm in a postdoctoral residency in pediatric!!!! I will do a year fellowship and then a 2 year certificate program.

there are many universities that accept international dentist for residency programs, being able to obtain your licence to practice here.

UTAH and Minnesota will give you licence without further education!!!! I just figured that out.

I know the process well and all the documents you need, some need to be send directly from your school and some you can put together and send.

I did the match and PASS which might sound complicated, but I can help

so trying to give back

GRE 1100
TOELF 114
NBDE I 77 bad.... but it worked
NBDE 84

experience in pediatric dentistry, volunteer work, one publication, thesis research...... if you want to contact me with questions please do, I speak spanish.

Many congrats to you, Chile. I have a question: to get into a residency program, do you need to complete a US DDS program first? THANKS

Hi Chile,
Happy to read your post in this forum.
Can you pls help by listing at least six universities
(and the specialty) that accept international dentists into there post doctoral dental residency programs). I am pretty confused about the possibilty of obtaining dental practice licensure after completing the post-doc dental residency.

Hi Chile, congrats on getting into pediatric. For a longtime I have been looking for this kind of inforation, called boards etc but did not get the satisfactory answer. Can we International dentists directly join residency? NY board says 'no'. Surprisingly NY has a couple of residency programs. Would only 2 yrs specialty residency fetch licence to practice? Some boards mention that they require 2 yrs equivalent us training. I understand its AEGD. But I do not wish to do aegd. If I happen to do aegd can I go for specialty after 2yrs and still get stipend. Also could u pls suggest the least expensive program.

Yes we can skip the advance standing program for international dentist, and go forward with our education looking at residencies

go to ADA.org

open two files, advanced dental education opportunities in there you will see the different especialties, and the schools that offer them
they are not all current but depending in what you have experience in, or what you would want to pursue you do your research

open also the file of the requirements of each state board, on that list you will see what states you can get license with 2 years postdoctoral studies!!!! like Washington!! and others, minnesota and UTAH will let you get license with out further education

I wanted pediatric dentistry that's what I practiced in Chile and where I have all my continuing education in, so after deciding pedo, I went to the AAPD american academy of pediatric dentistry and looked up residency programs and research one by one, 15 schools take international trainned dentist, and most of them will pay you!!!!

so this is a very good chance, some schools will ask you to take the GRE but you can do it not very hard will help with english if you are learning still.

please let me know if you have any questions!!!

You do not need a DDS from US if the school takes foreign trainned dentist, you have to get transcripts to ECE.org and submit all the documents each school will ask for

hey chile
thanks for the valuable information..
I am also interested in a residency program, but still not sure about the branch, was thinking of perio but there are very few schools payn, most of them are asking fr fess( tht is really high)..
my second option in pedo..
afetr doing residency without international dentist program, we cannot work in all the states?
but can we work as a faculty member in any other state, other frm the state from where we get our postdoctoral degree.

👍
You r doing a great job , but i have a few Questions.Firstly like the kind of dental experience you had in your home country(teaching or clinical). Also did u earn a Post graduate qualification in your home country. Moreover can we practice in some states at least after directly completing the Pedo Residency etc. and lastly please let us know which all other residencies are easier to get into, unlike Ortho , Endo and OMFS.

hi Chile, i am a foreign dentist , if i go for a masters program can i get a licence to practise? do u know how to get a licence in WA state?

Hi,

Can we work after completing Ms in Operative dentistry in US. Which states allow u to practise. Is it worth doing it because its not aN ADA accredited speciality. Please help

Ok here's more info
states where you can pursue license after 2 years of post doctoral studies
please verified with each state board
I am almost certain that you would be able to obtain license in more states in just the specialty that you got certified, which is also a great option, so check each state

California
Florida
Illinois
Kentucky
Lousiana
Maryland only pedo
MIchigan
minnesota
missisipi
nevada
tenessee\texas
virginia
washigton

so lots of options!!!

What I know more is about pedo, so here are the pedo programs that accept us!!!

University of alabama
Loma linda
UCSF
USC
University of connecticut
Nova Southeastr university
U. florida gainesville
University of iowa
LSU Lousiana
Baltimore college of dental surgery
Boston university
Tufts university
University of michigan
U texs houston
UTHS san antonio
U washington

so also quite a few, most all of them want you to apply through PASS and have a match number.

hope this helps!!!! good luck to everyone

Also the program you select has to be 2 years and Acredited by ADA even do is good to do an other one year program it would only help to get better curriculum, meet people, of course learn but it would not help you to get license

Hi,
My question is, does it have to be a 2 year program in order to be eligible for licensure? or can we do a 1 year program and then another 1 year program.

Thanks

HI chille,

If i do pedo from Baltimore college of dental surgery , will i be allowed to work in MD?
How can i confirmed it?
Please answer about my queries.
Thnk you so much in advance.

You do need a 2 year program!!!! must be 2 years and the requirements for licesing depends on each state board, so you can email the secretary asking or go on their web site, they will have a list of things
boards, wreb depending on location, jurisprudence exam of state.......

what I know you might be able to get a license as a specialist and only practice the specialty.

there is some misleading information on this topic.

First of all the following states for sure will not allow you to practice unless you have a DDS/DMD from an accr. school regardless if you have a spec.

Iowa - NO
California - NO
Nevada - NO
kentucky - NO
mississippi - NO
Utah..which was posted before.
not sure about tennesse..have to check
have to check on Louis.
not sure about maryland have to check

best thing is to do a DDS/DMD..as rules to licensure will never change..doing an a certificate will limit you a lot! and rules always change.

hv just got result of nbde part -1 , its like urs. wt should i do now ? i m frustrating now. 😕
i am planing for AEGD programmes. but don't know how it works ? do i need part - 2 also for that ( mainly i am interested in prosthodontics or periodontics )
- yet to take toefl.
- GPA is 3.94
- not done any research but have presented some posters and papers in conferences n hv their certificates.

do u have any idea regarding these courses? and what is match and PASS ? is it any exams ? and which university r u in ? r u sure after such AEGD programme u need not to do DDS to practice in illinois state ? i really was searching some one like u to help me out....

as of right now..yes if you do a 2 year aegd and then the ADLEX clinical examination you can practice in the state of illinois..but rules always change with certificate programs.

Also instead of asking people on SDN where and how to get licenced you should contact the dental boards, here is the website to all the dental boards...good luck..

http://www.dentalwatch.org/org/boards.html

call the boards contact numbers and ask away...

HI Lucus,
my idea is just to help, the information that I got on the state boards was form the ADA which was last updated in 2007 so yes you need to call each dental state board to confirm any information

about the pedo programs that's what I researched on the AAPD so I believe that is current.

Is just an alternative to doing a DDS, I would think that we all want to be practice dentistry again, and knowing how difficult the process is, this is an other option of doing so.

so sorry if you did not like my information.

I suggest you take the NBDE I again, I believe I was very lucky and my experience backed me up. but is not a good score, you can also take part II and see if you get an awesome score it may pass.

PASS and MATCH are two systems that allow you to do one application for several postdoctoral programs, many programs will make you only do PASS when you apply

Match, is a system to get in school, once you get selected for an interview, the school will pick their candidates through match, and you have to match with the school you want... they say it works for your advantage.....

hope that helps, good luck!!!

hey chile,
i think u r doing a good job.... i really appreciate it

I think Chile your are doing a terrific job in explaining the pedo programs which accept foreign trained dentists. However, I just think people should contact respective dental boards to gain info on licensure.

regards.🙂

It is true that a FTD can become licensed in some states with a specialty in lieu of a DDS/DMD, but for those pursuing this path beware that Most of the time Most of the post-grad programs would rather take a DDS/DMD candidate that achieved after four years: a high GPA, high boards, rotations, research, great rec letters from known faculties, etc. to choose a candidate that comes to the US, takes a few tests such as GRE, Toefl with transcripts from a program not ADA accredited.
The specialties are harder and harder to get in throughout the years, especially in programs that pay stipend, that's why usually most of the time FTD that did or do get accepted are going to programs that charge tuition and the higher it gets higher the odds that a FTD is accepted there, this is just an observation, always there are exceptions to the rule, Chile for example, in her post says that she is going first to attend a one year fellowship to then if accurate and things work out to repeat the first year of a two year certification program (I never heard of a program already choosing candidates to the following year prior to PASS and or Match cycle - Only Military) It sounds to me that Chile got accepted in a fellowship, period, but with the "promise" of doing good that she could become accepted to the traditional residency leading to the ADA accredited certificate. Chile correct me on that if I am wrong; and if you don't mind to share which program you are going to.
What I am trying to make people aware is that only in taking a few tests is no guarantee of anything, even for those that went to a DDS/DMD program. By the way, MN only issues a limited license to those approved FTD and must work under supervision of a DDS/DMD.
good luck to those applying

hey nbde
there is no way u can skip boards, even for the post doctoral programmes, board scores are required, and what ive got to knoe after reading the rules for gettimg the licensure, that in the applicayion they ask for national board scores.
ada has given list of all the states and their rules...
kindly look over them.

And all of you throwing light on the post graduate programs for FTDs ,
Really thank u all for doing such a gr8 job..
But a few more Qs hv popped into my head like , in case of applying thru PASS into residencies do we hav to provide multiple recos frm the concerned branch faculty or do the related branch faculty members recos also carry equal valuation.??

Hi Chile,
You did a terrific job exploring additional options for us fdt. I did a quick research following your information and found you are right we can get licensed in many states with the postdoc programs. I have a couple of questions:

1. Is oral and maxilofacial pathology an accredited program? In another word, can i be licensed after completing a 3 years such program? I am interested in this program because i have a phd degree and have strong research background.
2. GRE and NEBD II are required? I had a look at oral and maxilofacial pathology at Boston university--it asks for neither, not even NEBD I. How real is this?
Thank you.

I'm a foreign pediatric dentist from Vzla (with Master degree), thanks a lot for the information!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I'm interested in doing Pedo (again), what do you think about it???? solo quiero recuperar mi carrera de dentista....jajaja please!!!!!!! I lived in texas, permanent resident, but I got lower scores in both exams I:77 and II: 80....Do you think that I have a chance??.....I called the Director of the Pedo Program here in houston, and he send me an observer application, I have to fill the form and then I have to go dental school and returned with some documents..Do you have this kind of experienced..I mean like an observer?????

hi,
i have a few questions!!
so lets take it all from the begining!
how do we start!!
we finish our degree and we become dentists but whats next?
how do we work in the us?
i know that we take the NDBE exam but its not very clear!
so can i get a little more information about this issue!
and then another thing, do you have to repeat your last 2 years again?? or is it a residency program for 2 years??
is it true that we have to pay like over a 100,000 $ just to finish 2 years of practice?
and then what comes next, how do you become a working dentist??
and please tell me the bottom line,
so 5-6 years at the university
2 years of residency in the us
is that it??
i know its alot of questions but please try to help me as much as you can
thank you so very much!!!!!

Hi,

i have a low GPA 1.7 and part 1 90, can i apply for residency? do i have any chances ?

So lets say: Being a foreign graduate and after a OMS residency in Florida, can we practice in Florida?

Yep!Once you pass the florida license exam.

I need some help with pass application I will apply for the AEGD program but I don't know if I have to pay first by the web site or do I have to send my documents to pass first. Also, what documents do I have to send to PASS and how do I apply to Match?

ECE I don't understand what do I have to there what documents do I have to send I already call to the information service but I don't get help.

Hi chile, its good to listen about this.

hi chile
i need your opinion
i'm dentist graduated of a non-accredited dental school
and i finished orthodontics in my country
and now i'm preparing to nbde part 1
i want to ask you
is there any chance to enter orthodontics without doing 2 years of general dentistry
and whate the steps i have to do for orthodontics
please chile answer me as soon as possible
i'm really waiting your answer
thanks aloooooot

hey there i got a score of 78 in part 1. and i m preparing for part 2. i just want to know if minnesota and UTAH gives licensure to practice directly without schooling???? please help me with this

You do not need a DDS from US if the school takes foreign trainned dentist, you have to get transcripts to ECE.org and submit all the documents each school will ask for

Dont you think that if minnesota and utah did this the whole entire world would be in these states????

First of all in utah you need a dds.

Second in minnesota only very very few dentists make it through the rigors licensing with out a dds (eg. Years of experience etc...),,,and if you do make it (after doing the boards, clinical boards and so on.....you have to be supervised by a dds for 3 years.

Call the boards always before posting questions regarding licensure in respective states...

Good luck
