When do programs submit final rank lists? Mid to late Feb right? Since the due date for all ROL is March 1st i believe. I took Step 2 Jan 5th (last weds) so Im hoping I have my score by end of January. Usually takes 2-3 wednesdays pretty sure? please relieve my anxiety lmao

I think it might depend on the program. Some programs finished interviews a lot sooner than others. Do all your programs need step 2 to rank?

Not all but the ones i care about yes. My top 6 havent finished interviewing yet and i dont think theyre done until the end of January. I think most academic programs interview through mid to end of January

If they finish interviews mid-end Jan then you should be fine then.
 
Can anyone speak on how they would rank these Texas schools? Interested in cardiology

UTSA, UTMB, UT Dell, Baylor temple, Dallas Methodist, Cleveland clinic main.

Thanks in advance, having a hard time between a few and want another perspective

For cards CCF>Baylor (BCM?)>Temple>UT Dell=UTMB>the rest

In general Baylor>>CCF>the rest

For me, location >>> everything else. Then quality of life/schedule >> vacation time/policies > overall vibe I got > benefits > salary.

Still trying to figure out the order of my top 3. I know which 3 programs it'll include, but haven't decided which will be 1, 2, 3.

I have similar problem .. i have my programs in 3 groups..i know how to divide the programs in which group but within the group I'm having a hard time with exact ranking. Right now I'm looking mostly at fellowship opportunities so how good the in-house fellowship is as well as the fellowship match list. Also, debating if I should rank a place higher if I have guaranteed acceptance into their fellowship without needing to apply again even if their fellowship isn't the best.

This is a big deal. I mean, I guess it depends on your end-goal career aspirations, but the peace of mind that would come from having a guaranteed spot and not having to gun as hard the next 3 years would make me consider a place higher.

How hard do you need to gun in residency for a competitive fellowship though? I mean other than research/mentors you acquire and where you do IM (which bascally determines the ease of securing these things) isnt most of your application basically your Step scores which are already done with? I think most of the gunning is already had. You just have to basically find time to do research (some places mostly the big academic places have protected research blocks) really and not be someone people hate lol

QOL/Schedule > Prestige = Location >>>>> Everything else. And honestly, most days I look at my rank list, I'm moving those residencies with bigger names higher and higher lol. Can't help it.

My mentor told me fellowship is who your letter writers are and how much research you have. I think its a different type of gunning in that you really just need to be productive in a research capacity

I'm just tired lol. But I speak as someone not interested in fellowship.

100% agree. Which is why academic programs make things “easier” with the resources and faculty there that “know people” but

Ended up with 13 invites that I was happy with. Would be totally content matching within my top 8 and id be ok with matching any of the programs. My #1 is my #1 by like a lot and planning on sending LOI there but it seems like this program is crazy popular this year so it scares me lol. Based on previous years it appears the trend is they only match 1 DO per year 🙁 Would be happy to share my list over PM just dont want to disclose too much over SDN im usually not paranoid like this lmao. Hows your list looking
 
Anybody with opinions of NJMS vs Pennsy? Been deliberating over these two for a while now. Both seem pretty IMG-heavy to me. Most interested in which place I've got the best chance at GI fellowship.

pennsy is better overall. QOL better better culture and better shot at GI. You have UPenn resources for research and mntorship

Do you think you will be a competitive applicant for GI? NJMS has an in-house GI fellowship which would be a good back up.

Hard to assess my own competitiveness tbh. Figured most of that will come down to research + connections + letters established during residency

I think it depends on if you want to take the safer route or not. Its always a safer bet when you have in-house fellowships.

I am gunna have a different opinion than above.

NJMS has an in-house GI as well as a non-ACGME hepatology as a "fall back". Pennsy has neither. Despite the name brand NJMS is pretty strong GI wise and has some world renowned experts in motility. So I would rank it higher because your best bet as a DO in house fellowships are key to getting good LORs from academic GI faculty.
 
Interviewed at two programs where the PD acknowledged I was a DO and talked about how they have DOs on faculty. Its kind of nice to hear that. One of the program is an academic place that has never had a DO but they said they trying to change that.

I interviewed at both. Seemed to me like Pennsy had a more family oriented vibe and the hospital staff and faculty seemed (from vine i got from the residents as well as reddit etc) more enthusiastic about teaching and everyone was more chill. NJMS i hear the overall vibe at the main hospital (university hospital) is pretty cuthroat and there are attendings that arent very nice and ignore you. NJMS overall as a program is a decent academic program with plenty of resources and very very solid match list yet the vibe i got on interview day is that you really have to bust ur butt and dig deep to find research opportunities so someone interested in GI where research is mega important that may be a con for you bc I know it is for me. Pennsy seemed like the research opportunities were endless with HUP connects and ample opportunities to get set up with well known/strong GI mentors based on interactions with residents. Pennsy just seemed better overall in most aspects. Yes its a “communiversity” program and NJMS is a full university/academic program but I dont think that really matters much. For what its worth and I know I may get hate for this comment Pennsy got ranked 21 for rep/prestige on Doximity so take that how u want it some may say doximity hyped them too much idk. Im personally ranking Pennsy above NJMS

what are ur priorities? what are ur career goals? fellowship? if u care about rep the most then IU MCW Rochester and USF should be in top 4. IU and Rochester are the best programs on ur list. USF for location and Hemeonc (Moffitt)

Priorities: hem/onc fellowship & research, non-malignant, QOL, reputation
 
Just got my step 2 score back. 252. Really underperformed considering i had a 2 point drop from my Step 1 and my practice NBMEs were 260+ which was my goal. How much you guys think this will hurt me for ranking? @AlteredScale any input?

Really doubt it’s gonna hurt you. 252 is really solid still and as long as it’s still within a few points of ur step 1 you should be fine.
