IM program invites

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Lol rejected from another university program within 2 hours of my hometown. I don't really understand what's going on

Ill trade you my NJMS invite for your UMiami lmao (dont do it Miami is way better)
Lol I would totally do it if that was allowed.. my SO got ivs at really good programs in NYC...so NJMS will give us more rank combinations

I wish there was an option to trade where programs would view the apps and be able to decide if theyd go through with it if the applicant was competitive. Were both competitive for both programs lol would be funny if this was a thing

=( that sucks! this whole system is kind of a crapshoot

It really is! I've gotten IVs from places my friends were expecting IVs from, and they've gotten IVs at places I was expecting IVs lol. And it seems to a certain extent that step scores don't matter that much at a certain point (have had friends with lower stats get IVs at more competitive places that I haven't heard from).

Have you guys been sending thank you emails post interview?
I have not. I've heard the hypothetical where two applicants are basically identical on a match list then the thank you email is the ONE thing that nudges one ahead, but I just don't buy it lol.

I have to programs that send me a list of emails. Just brief, thanking them for their time. I don't think it will make or break you either way. Some programs have explicitly said not to send anything.

I was gonna send LOI's to my top programs closer to rank time.. is that ok?

When you decide who to send your LOI to, are you taking into consideration whether you have a good chance in matching there? It feels kind of wasteful to send a LOI to a program that is a reach.

2 big fat rejections from UVA and Tufts. sweeet haha. I couldve cared less about Tufts bc i heard very malignant but UVA im pretty salty about it was one of my top programs I also 100% know its bc Im a DO same with Tufts bc ive gotten interviews at better places just stings

Yea it sucks...Tufts is notorious for being anti-DO...

Do you guys know if I applied to two tracks for a program and I interviewed for both...can I rank them separately?

Does anyone know how Cleveland Clinic ranks in terms of IM residency ?

People bicker about how it should be rated, but it's a solid program that will easily get you into fellowship. The facilities and resources they have available are pretty incredible.

At the very least its upper midtier for absolute sure. Its definitely namebrand and exceptional fellowship match and is known for cards. Definitely impressive if you got an interview there if its the foundational/main campus

Thank you for your input! I just hear too much negative comments regarding it and although I have it atop my list but have reservations. bc of that. My interview is next month so i will have to get the feel too. They do take DOs (roughly 20%)

Lol what? Any program that interviews you, you have a good shot at.. don't care if I think it's a reach or not.. by LOI I meant post interview not the letter of interest.

Apparently some DO got a UVA interview no LOI no signal OOS. I guess it wasnt my DO status that got me rejected. This process is so weird. Also kind of confused Ive heard nothing from GW

Just saw a reddit post:

Obviously we dont know how true this story is… I got an interview at a top place that has never taken a DO (only got invite bc of my SO)… so seems like a waste to send LOI to them

Yeah the process is a crapshoot.. I was confident I would get Cleveland clinic iv based on scores, regional preference and signaling but never got one… ended up getting it at other places that I didnt think I would

What negative things?
Something to consider irrespective of rankings, programs like Cleveland clinic/Mayo/etc are literally swimming with fellows. There are real downsides to doing residency at a fellow driven facility. That doesn’t mean they are “bad” places to train, but the focus is different. I know for CC in particular both their IM and Surgery programs are notoriously fellow heavy. There are perks and benefits to training at those types of places too, it just depends on career goals.

Anyone know where Cleveland Clinic Florida compares with the main campus? I know it's obviously not as good, and it's a much smaller hospital, but I'm wondering if the Cleveland clinic name still has weight if you go there and if the education is similar

I don’t think the satellites are viewed nearly the same as the main campus for either Mayo or CC

I agree with your opinions 100%. What time of career goal would someone doing IM at CC be inclined towards?

If you know you want to do 1. A competitive fellowship and 2. Do said competitive fellowship at a big academic place 3. An academic/research career where the academic connections you’d make during residency could help.

If you want to do the above I think it would be worth it to go to that kind of place.

as a DO, I still think there are limitations in some fellowships esp at certain programs. (ie: Cardiology at CC has never taken a DO)

Well yes, but that isn’t really relevant to the point of the pros/cons of going to CC for residency.

Oh no I was just replying to the point #1. Going to CC vs another academic program has no difference

I mean how can an LOI hurt you tho? It can only help you. I see NO reason for a program to interview someone without the intention of atleast ranking them, maybe your LOI can help you get ranked a bit higher. This story sounds untrue, and if true, what a waste a time for both the person and the program. No program is worth wasting your time even if it's a soo called top program. Programs have a limited number of interviews and if they are just simply interviewing DO's for drive by looks they are wasting a lot of time. The Reddit poster is overthinking it, they should rank them #1 if they want, irregardless of anything since the match favors the applicant not the program. Unless the program straight up says we won't rank you. This is different if the person did an away there, didn't get an interview and then they pretty much begged for a courtesy interview in which case maybe the program will DNR them, but your case and the Reddit post are not that..
