Hello all! I am freaking out right now and need some reassurance! I have a 3.47 overall college GPA right now at a very good university in California.
My science GPA is a tad higher than that.

I am an Economics major.

These are my grades in science courses so far:
Gen Chem 1: A-
Gen Chem 2: B+
Gen Chem 3: A
Bio 1: C+
Bio 3: B-
Human Genome: A-
Physics 1: B
Calculus 1: A
Statistics (biology emphasis): A-

I am currently taking
Physics 2 and Calc 2 right now. Doing pretty well in Physics (A-/B+/B) but not doing too good in Calc. Hoping for the curve to help me out.

I am going to be taking Organic Chem 1 and Physics 3 over the summer and hope to Ace both classes.
I will also be doing community service at hospital and shadowing over my 4 month summer break.

My EC so far:
Praxis community service club freshman year
Sierra Club this year
hoping to do 100 hours of community service
and around 30-40 hrs shadowing.

My question is around what mCAT score will I have to get if my GPA stays around 3.4-3.5 to get accepted into ANY medical school in the US. I don't care if it is a DO or an MD.
And is my GPA decent enough to get into medical school or do I need a 3.5+?

Thank you! 🙂

Honestly it sounds like your only priority is to get into med school no matter what. Now I'm only judging here, but it seems like you're under pressure to get into med school from some one/thing.

Anyways....what year are you? It seems like you just finished your first year? Maybe you're at UCSD since it looks like you're on the quarter system. First of all you need to recalculate your GPA based on the AMCAS system (google AMCAS gpa calculator).

Second of all, relax. You're early in. Stop thinking that "If I have X GPA and X MCAT I will get into med school". The truth is that even if you have a 4.0 and a 40, you won't get into med school if you have no ECs, and it's clearly too early to tell from your post what your EC's will be by the time you apply.

So relax. And do better next time. And click on my signature's "Prereq grades" tab.

Generally applicants with a 3.5 or higher are accepted. However GPA is not close to the number of factors involved.

Also as just a warning: don't be that premed who chooses a major that's "unique" to stand out. No school will look at it during the first screen of your app. So only major in something you like. If that is economics, then so be it 🙂

Thank you TexasSurgeon!
I am just so worried because I am scared Ochem might drop my GPA next year 🙁
I know GPA isn't everything but its a big part of the application process.

And I enjoy Economics! 🙂

Follow the advice of TexasSurgeon,
I just want to add a note about Ochem - yes the course is tough and costs many a student their GPA
BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE.
I love orgo (I have a bunch of orgo videos on YouTube Under Leah4sci) and will be happy to advise you towards acing it.
When does your summer course begin?
Assuming you still have some time, my advice is to start reviewing the information in advance. If you're about to take your first orgo, go back to your gen-chem notes, or better yet, get the orgo book and review the first few chapters. Atoms, orbitals, hybridization, Lewis structure, resonance... this will give you a boost once the course begins to help you score high

Thank you very much!
I go to UC Davis, and I know >75% of the class are going to be premed students so I must prepare to get the extra boost.
I know that if I ace Ochem series, I greatly higher my chances of getting accepted into Medical School. I will prepare beforehand! 🙂

When does your course begin?
well I'm debating on taking Ochem and Physics together over the summer or just physics.
But if I do decide to take Ochem this summer, the course will begin on the 24th of this month, and I get out on the 12th. so ~2 weeks to get a head start on both physics and ochem.

I don't know you, your school, or your academic ability, so as a rule of thumb I will caution against taking organic chemistry in the summer. The material is fast paced and very different from chemistry/physics/bio where you have concepts + memorization. Orgo is about learning, understand, deriving... puzzles, which means you need time to process.
Many of my summer students come to me after having failed/withdrawn in the fall or spring. You will be competing with students who were exposed to the material in advance putting you at a potential disadvantage

Not sure how to 'quote' a post, but yes, I do tutor. Look for my Orgo videos on YouTube by typing in 'Leah4sci'

Yes I noticed that that was why I didn't want to take it over the summer.
Thank you very much for your help

and I just looked at some of ur videos online. Are these videos for Ochem 1 only or do they involve Ochem 2 as well?

I tutor all the sciences but so far I've posted mostly orgo 1 videos. I have a membership site which covers lots more including orgo 2 but let's focus on getting you prepared for orgo 1 first 🙂
