IMG Internal Medicine Applicants - Match 2020

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can anyone tell me if Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (Bronx) Internal Medicine Residency Program is a prematch? I cannot find any info and they invited me for an IV shortly but I don’t know if I can make it on such short notice due to work constraints.

Don't think they are. Doesn't mean it's great, though, but it participates on the match according to freida.

Thank you because they literally gave me two days notice which is very hard to accommodate at this point

I just got this now. It tires me, firstly, that there's such a short response time, and secondly, there's really no information on the program either on ERAS or FREIDA. How do you research a program that doesn't even have a website? I don't even know what kinds of visas they sponsor?

I may be wrong, but I think it's a prematch program. There's no NRMP code on ERAS

It sounds insane that I have to respond literally by tomorrow .... I don’t understand the email: is it suggesting that you get a chance only on the mentioned dates or can you technically refuse those dates and be given a later one? Super unclear

All I found was that. I'm not scheduling an IV there.

I have been in contact with the PC (I too got an invite there 2 days ago) and she assured me it's not a prematch program and sent me their NRMP codes. They also told me that they want to extend interviews only for October, but I told her I wasn't available then and asked for late November, and she booked me for a date then. It's worth emailing her and asking her for a later date.

The lack of information online about the program is a bit sketchy, I must admit. I guess you will have to wait until you interview (if you decide to go) to find out more.

Hey guys with 13 interviews and the first one being at Bronx-Lebanon, should I accept if they offered me a prematch?? Any suggestions?

Honestly there is no right or wrong decision. All comes down to you. Did u like the prog ? did you see yourself in it? With 11 interviews your odds are matching are high anyway hopefully

If most of these are prematch and you like the program, go for it. But do careful research about every single program before deciding. With that number of IVs I personally would never take a prematch, but it's personal.

My personal opinion: Don't do it. With 13 interviews already you are most likely a highly qualified applicant and have extremely high chances of matching within the system (you are also probably going to get a few more interviews before the season is through). Keep in mind that prematch programs are typically the more malignant ones with worse working conditions, so I feel like in your case taking a prematch offer is settling for a lower tier program when you have super high chances of matching into something better.

Though, this is just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt. If you really love the Bronx program, have visited it and gotten a good feel for what the working/training conditions are like, and feel you would be happy there for the next 3 years, then by all means go for it. But do your research first, you don't want to regret your decision later on...

it's my perception that NY and Chicago only cater to high scorers, I'm more hopeful towards Michigan, Ohio, or Pennsylvania.
I don't agree with this statement, not for NY at least. My scores are below average and I have received 5 interviews in NY. I have heard from a applicants with similar credentials receiving IVs mostly in NY. We may as well be the exception, I know.,

Accept anything my friend, accept anything.

This is a really bad advise on his/her part. Just because we are IMGs doesn’t mean we have to take whatever offer we get.

I think a lot of you forget, we are all medical doctors, we all went to university and worked our ass off, we are not some uneducated immigrants begging for scraps.

This mentality really has to stop, I’m tired of people here and in other forums acting as if we were lesser individuals who shouldn’t have standards on where we are getting our education and that we should be grateful to be in some ****hole program.

Dear Fewa Fibroblasts, if your only purpose in life right now is to match no matter what, no matter the hours, location, resident well-being, and most importantly career opportunities, etc. Then by all means take the prematch offer. But right now having 11 interviews and possibly more incoming means you really have a shot in the match, having the possibility to choose based on what YOU like, so think about it, research every program that has called you till now and make the best decision you think works for you. Gook luck 🙂

Yeah, agree with this. Plus Chicago is similar.

Is Canadian experience considered like USCE? Does it help at all?
October has been really slow for me and I am trying to figure out if something is wrong with my application

NY has a lot of programs. I think Chicago does as well. Since a lot of this is a numbers game if you apply to all the programs in NY or Chicago you are more likely to get a return so that’s why some people regardless of stats have more IV there. Also these places are heavily populated so a lot of imgs have regional ties. At the same time there are some programs in NY and Chicago that have very high standards. Those are going to auto reject almost all IMGs.
