Hi,
I'm a medical graduate from Pakistan and I'm looking to go to Australia for postgrad medical training. I've looked around a lot and there are still things confusing me regarding the process.
From what I've gathered so far, I know that I have to pass the AMC MCQ exam first and fulfill the english requirements (IELTS), and get my degree/qualification verified with the ECFMG (which the folks at AMC will do, once I lodge my application with them, I reckon).
I've graduated from Aga Khan University Medical College in Sept. this year, awaiting degree in about a months time. Traditionally nobody in my medical college has ever applied to Australia; know-how of the procedure, stages and what-to-do/when-to-do is virtually non-existent there, so I'm looking for help.
My questions are:
1. Is it a requirement for me to complete 1 yr's internship/house-job in MY OWN country before coming to Australia?
2. Is the 1 yr "approved supervised training" period in Australia (prior to AMC Clinical exam) the same as Internship there? or is it different?
3. If it is different then, I assume, I will have to apply for an Internship position after completing the full AMC exam, and being declared an AMC graduate. Right?
Now I am well aware of the increasingly difficult situation for IMGs regarding internship in Oz, my question is if it will change for me if I have a PR immigration status? I have 2 brothers working in Australia, one a citizen the other a PR (hence my decision to go to Oz) and my own immigration status for Family migration (sponsored) is underway, but I'm not realistically expecting that get completed any time soon (maybe at least a year or 2 more).
I intend to apply for a residency in internal medicine, and specialise then in Neurology. I know that, while its not exactly surgery or Ophthalmology or any other "virtually impossible" specialty, its still going to be competitive.
One more question: Is a Junior Medical Officer position the same as an Intern? I'm a little confused about the positions/ranking in the Australian system and clearing that can help as well..
thanks
