I'm in the faculty of med in a school in Canada.
I have come to notice within the last month or so of our program, that there are a lot of immature people here. (Please don't think that I'm an arrogant jerk who think they're all high and mighty. I mean I can be immature at this time...just not in front of medical profs or patients.) It's just that I feel like I'm on a soap opera or something, lots of backstabbing, cliques, talking behind peoples backs, rumours, people hiding old assignments and journal articles from their peers. I mean, in the first week we had all of these lectures about interprofessionalism and working well as a TEAM. Yet, I'm stuck with some "colleagues" who are complete jerks. It's like they're all still in pre-med or something. I mean what do you have to compete for now? You're not smarter than everyone here. We all got into med school!!

I'll give you an example. We had our first quiz a couple weeks back. And since it was the first one, the prof said that he would put one section (clinical cases) of an old quiz from 2 years back in the library reserve. The next day, the quiz was missing from the reserve. Turns out this girl took it...I guess hoping that noone else would get it, so that she could have an 'advantage'. She then gave it to some girls in her clique and i guess hoped they would keep quiet. But I guess, one other girl had some other friend she promised to help and so on and so on. And eventually, 3/4 of the class had the quiz. Then someone decided to scan it and post it in our class group on Facebook. Well the original thief told the prof about it and complained in class that this broke copyright laws or something ******ed like that(I guess because she was sooo angry she would lose her 'advantage'). Funny thing is the prof was not too impressed with her behaviour, so he ended up posting the quiz online on our university webspace anyway. He also said that if this creates conflicts he will no longer put any materials in the reserve .... bravo loser girl!

Anyway, I just had to vent. I don't know if this is common at other schools. And please don't get me wrong, the majority of people are really amazing. But that ~1/4 of our class is just difficult to be around.

Any similar stories?

ahhh how wonderful... the doctors of tomorrow...

I'm confused. Your status says pre-med. But it sounds like you are a new med student. But you began by saying you are faculty? Is that just a difference in word choices for Canadians?

But no... our school is nothing like that. The most competitive students here simply keep to themselves when studying and are generally very polite otherwise. Most everyone freely helps others by answering questions, posting review guides/charts/etc to email lists, etc.

lol.. yeah ....
My roommate is just exactly like that girl 😡... at times i get so mad at my roommate that i wanna kill her!!! I wonder what will med school turn me into??? 🙄

osli - I said I'm a student in the Faculty of Medicine (ie. division of medicine) in Canada. I'm still pre-med but doing DPT in the faculty. Hoping to switch into Med school next fall...once they finally accept me lol.

I guess I'm not familiar with that phrase. Must be a Canadian/US thing. So is "faculty of medicine" essentially an undergrad premedical curriculum? And what is DPT? Forgive my ignorance, but it's the first time I've run across this. Don't want to sound stupid in the future if I wind up working with a Canadian graduate... better to just sound stupid now.

yeah the phrase seems to be something used outside of the USA. i've chatted with students overseas and when asking them what their major is I'll get a reply that they are in the faculty of engineering or medicine or whatever they are studying...

but back to the topic.. i guess i'm lucky that our class hasn't had anyone do that sort of thing... so far everyone's been willing to help each other out.

I'm personally immature in a different way.

I giggle when a lecturer says "Penis."

When someone talks about the rectum I reply with "Rectum? Damn near killed him!"

I literally could not stop laughing when they projected a massive picture of a vagina with a giant condyloma on it and everyone else groaned and looked sick.

I'm an awful person.

I just turned myself into a running joke with an attending and an RN at the FP clinic I'm at. The RN warned me that the main reason this one patient I was about to go in and see typically isn't for the stated reason on the sheet "Right hand and Finger Pain," and that he usually wants another pill for wink:wink:nudge:nudge. So I innocently said, "Well, is there ANY connection to his visit and the hand pain?" (Simply because I've just finished OB/gyn, and I tend to get all the prenatals, postpartum, and Px with pap visits, and I really wanted an ortho-ish visit for once). As soon as I said that, the RN started laughing and said "Don't go there!," and I turned bright red... I had to wait a few seconds before I went into the patient's room. Fortunately, he had trigger finger, and only wanted refills on his statin.

Ok let me clarify lol...and don't worry I think I made everything too complicated.

In Canadian universities "faculty" refers to a broad group of departments which share a common area of study like Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Social Science, etc. Then within each faculty you would have specific departments.

For instance, in the Faculty of Mdicine we have the department of physical therapy, department of occupational therapy, department of medicine (they just call it school of medicine - where you get your MD), school of dentistry. So I guess the terms school and department are pretty interchangeable. I agree it's a little confusing.

If you want another example, in the Faculty of Science, you would have the Dept of Biology, Dept of Biochemistry, Dept of Chemistry, Dept of Physics etc etc.

So Faculty is just the broad name. It's like another step in the bureaucratic ladder. The University allocates so much money to each Faculty. And then Chairs of each faculty split it among the different departments/schools depending on which is more important lol.

So I belong to the Faculty of Medicine at my school, but I'm in the Physio program. Americans call it DPT - doctor of physical therapy. In Canada, physio is actually a 2 or 3 year Masters of Science Program. So whereas Americans graduate with a DPT, we graduate with a MSc in Physical Therapy.
Same thing really, different name.

I am also immature in this way.

Not a rectum was uttered without the above response. This was further stretched to rectus abdominis? . . . damn near killed us abdominis!

What is the preferred sexual position of someone with cushing's?

. . . The Buffalo Hump! . . . came up with that one myself.

That's cool. I'm used to different names for the same things. One university, within it are either "college of engineering" or "school of chemistry" (college and school seem to be pretty much the same thing). Within a college or school are "departments of mechanical engineering, chemical engineering" etc. Same structure, just different names. And faculty typically refers to the professors specifically. So I was quite confused when you said you were in the faculty!

Two of our study objectives for out last block...
-Describe and locate the clitoris
-Describe the female orgasm.

I could tell it was a new concept to some of the male members of the class, haha.

Well, medical students are incredibly young, so I don't think you can expect them to be that mature. At least that's my take on it since most of my classmates are nearly 10 years younger than me.

I giggle when a lecturer says "Penis."

Dude, this actually happened in class one day, on my last day of lecture for M2 year... The lecturer said 'Penis', and this girl in the front row just started cracking up. Then the entire rest of the class just bursted out in laugh. I usually dont attend lecture, but Im sooo glad I went that day, cuz it had to be the FUNNIEST thing to happen in class all year. I was laughing for a good 5 minutes. 😆😆😆😆😆

When I had sex ed in 5th grade, the mean nurse who taught it made us all say "penis" and "testicles" together without laughing. If you laughed, you got in trouble. I think most adults would have trouble with that, so it doesn't seem like a fair expectation for 10 year olds.

Your school tested you on hypothetical/mythical phenomena/structures? What else did they test you on, how to find the Abdominal Snowman?

Yeah, I could say that most of the persons in my class are immature and incapable of even take responsibility and I'm shocked that one day they'll have a person's life in their hands.
I'm 21 years old, and the average in our class is around 20. Many of these people shouldn't be back to study until they are around 30. They act like kids, they act like the medical program is a joke and nothing to put time into.
The worst thing is that around 50% were to fail the anatomy final exam. What do they do? They lower the 50% point-limit to 30%. Even a monkey could get 30% on the anatomy exam by just guessing.
So they passed the exam, and one day, those irresponsible, lazy people will kill someone because of their lack of knowledge about the BASICS in anatomy.
I know those people, and I know that they were about to fail because they like to do everything but to study.
What the hell are they doing here?

Plus, the most people in our class are emotional wrecks. You cannot say no without someone being an ass about it. Two of my friends start to fight, and they want me to choose side. Like darn children.
Most of the students are spoiled brats that want to work in a private NY hospital, work a couple of hours a day, have a big apartment and a monthly $30,000 in the paycheck without doing anything.

But still I have to keep my faith in humanity that someday, somehow, thay will evolve into adults.

Yes, I am in a bad mood for the moment. 😡

When it comes to academic immaturity, these jokers will likely not fare so well on the board exams. I wouldn't worry about it, most of them will just weed themselves into non-invasive specialties or out of the system entirely.

Although, I must say that I am glad to see that so many people still giggle when the words "penis" or "rectum" are uttered. I was afraid I'd be the only one!

Thanks for your reply. I'm glad that you agree with me. 🙂

I giggle at many words like "penis" or "anal canal" ect. I think I'm crazy.

Go-litely always cracks me up 😀

Are you in med school in Poland? Does Poland have the US equivalent of the USMLE? Maybe PMLE?

I have never heard of anyone describe themselves as being in the "Faculty of Medicine" unless they are actually a medical student or a grad student doing medical research. You could have said you were a physio student. Nobody would have asked for clarification.

My buddy and I chuckled when gaze was talked about . . . like 'gays' get it?

Are they mature or prudish?

I think our education is sufficient to without any trouble being able to work in the States.
Yes, we have a kind of final exam in the last year that you have to pass t get your licence, and it covers everything we have learned since the first year.

But the thing is, that our school just wants money, and if students proceed studying, they get an extra $8500 a year. So they pass students.
I hope that it will stop soon.

the sooner you realize medical school is like high school the better off you will be. i feel like i have regressed in maturity at times from undergrad

Hate to break it to you, but 1) you probably won't kill someone because of poor anatomy knowledge (unless you're a surgeon), and 2) most paracticing doctors remember very little "basic anatomy." You only need what your specialty revolves around, and there is plenty of time in the clinical years/residency to learn that. my 2 cents.

Not only was my post referring to their lack of knowledge of anatomy, but also how easily they let people pass in different subjects.
How in the hell are you going to be a good doctor if you don't even know the basics?
They will kill someone because of their lack of committment to their choice of career, and our school is not making it easier by passing them when they don't even get 50% on the anatomy exam (which by the way, is not that hard to pass at all if you study).

The thing I want to say is that if they don't learn discipline now, how will they do that later? They have lo learn that medicine is hard work.
For example, if they don't like to learn at all, how will they upgrade their knowledge in the future? They will skip going on seminars abour newer treatments and will use antique methods on their patients (around 20 years into their carreers).

If they are going to remain the same and have the same view about medicine, they are no good as doctors.

And about point 2: The funny thing is that most of these students I have mentioned that barely passed the anatomy exam want to be surgeons.

Plus, they will be a greater asset in their internship if they are prepared theoretically. They will do more good then and then there is time to get better as a doctor. I personally think that it's ridiculous that someone has to learn anatomy during their internship when it was taught in the first year.

I think that if you have chosen a job where you are going to save lives, it's your responsibility to get damn good at what you do.

Dang, youre class is YOUNG. I was 21 when I started medical school, and the avg. age was close to 24!! I can maybe think of 4 people in my class who are younger than me...

I had a patient mention the humor of this just yesterday. Isn't it actually Go-lytely?

You're right. It is Go-lytely. Either way, from what I have heard from patients who are on it, you definitely don't...hehe...go...hehe... lightly.

My buddy and I chuckled when gaze was talked about . . . like 'gays' get it?

Oh, many jokes were made when we learned about all the parts in the brain that controlled the gaze. Many jokes indeed.

Yeah, I know. I would be for raising the minimum age to be able to enter medschool to 24 at least, and to be able to enter you have to have worked 2 years to be able to mature and see the world as it is.
I would vote for that, even if it meant for me having to wait three years until I can proceed.
I believe that they can make better doctors in that way. But I'm kinda conservative in my thinking anyways.

We had a professor tell us that Go-Lytely should be called Go-$hityourself.

I love how this thread started by condemning immature med students but got hijacked and turned into a thread about funny anatomical terms.

Heehee...loose areolar tissue...

Seriously though, I think it's normal to think these things are funny. That isn't the same as being unprofessional with colleagues or patients though, as has been described in previous threads. Personally I haven't seen anything like that or heard of students being particularly cutthroat at my school.

In my experience medical school is high school all over again. It's sad, but true.

Sorry if someone already mentioned this, I didn't bother to read the whole thread.

I agree with this. Our cliques were formed by the time orientation was over. Plus we have lockers.. I missed out on joining a clique (Asian clique, ex-sorority clique, jock clique, etc) so now I am in the loosely-associated clique of people who lack a clique. So very HS all over again.

I dunno if I'd go that far. Granted, Im not going to pretend to overly mature for my age, but I know I have more maturity than many of my classmates ('penis girl' in the anecdote above is 2 years older than me). Several classmates in their late 20s act like they're in high school.

While I have no regrets about the path I took, I do realize it has its ups and downs. Sure, Ill be a younger doctor than most, but I also lose out on alot of things to experience. Im in the same class as people who have travelled, worked, raised families, and truly experienced alot. These years of my early 20s, the prime of my life, will be spend in the library bent over textbooks, or in the hospital bitched at by residents, nurses, and janitors.

I do agree for some it would be better to take some time off, but I feel that I entered at just the right time. One year earlier, I would not have had the maturity or strength to endure it. One year later, I would have lost out on many of the close friends I made, and my class would not have been nearly as fun. To each their own, I say!

I agree with you about being serious in your studies. Especially since it involves saving lives. But you need to loosen up a bit and have fun . I'm not saying have fun all the time but balance it. I mean I'm 19 years old .I only get to be 19 once in life and I'm gonna enjoy my studies and have fun in anatomy lab while learning. There's nothing wrong with that. Medicine is not about being stricked .But once again what do I know I'm still a first year med student and I'm gonna be in med school for the next 6 years so I might as well enjoy it.

6 years??? What medical school does that? Or are you MD/PhD?

I mean I'm 19 years old .I only get to be 19 once in life and I'm gonna enjoy my studies and have fun in anatomy lab while learning. There's nothing wrong with that. Medicine is not about being stricked .But once again what do I know I'm still a first year med student and I'm gonna be in med school for the next 6 years so I might as well enjoy it.
I see you, but what I mean is that they aren't serious, at all.
You can have fun and be mature. You can drink and get hungover, but still keep it at a mature level.
I am second year, and I have 5 years left. I guess you study in Europe?

No I study in NewZealand. Over here medicine is 7 years. 1 year of premed (basic science), 5 years med school and 1 year of intership to get your MD.

Oh, ok. I study in Poland. We have no premed, but we have instead a 6 year education, plus a year of internship, which makes it seven years. So we have a similar course plan I guess.
