Immunology, Virology, or Biology of Cancer? (Undergraduate)

1.)Please rank the above courses in order of difficulty.
(1=harder, 3=easier)

2.)Please rank the above courses in order of study time.
(1=most time, 3=least time)

3.)Please rank the above courses in order of what would be most recommended if taking as a post-bac applying to medical school.
(1=most recommended, 3=least recommended)

THANK YOU FOR YOUR OPINIONS! PLEASE NOTE ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS IF YOU WOULD LIKE.

I'm not sure how they can be ranked...the courses are different at every school, and every professor is different...I know even from my undergrad, the same class with different professors is totally different with the amount of work, difficulty of tests, and even difficulty of material.

Well I'm not sure if I can answer 1 or 2 for you since it would depend on what school you're at. I took a Genetics class last semester at an Ivy League that was a joke and the subject is generally challenging.

But for #3, I can say that Immuno would probably be the most relevant and then Virology and Biology of Cancer. That would be my guess.

it may different at my school than yours...but Immunology is supposed to be one of the hardest bio courses at my school. Bio of cancer at my school is a non-lab 100 level course and I'm pretty sure the people that take it are non-science majors (although they say its taught like a science major course). i dont imagine virology would be easy either, but i dont know b/c its not offered at my school. itd b best to askt he people that go to your institution cuz i imagine difficulty levels can vary....you can easily make a biology of cancer a 400 level course that is ridiculously hard

Do you go to UC Irvine?? If you do I would say that Immunology is the most difficult because of the amount of information, Virology is the second most difficult..it used to be a 6 unit course but then they made it two courses over two quarters so it is not as condensed but still difficult (not as difficult as Immunology though). I would say the 'easiest' class is Biology of Cancer. You have to keep in mind that none of these classes are 'easy' but at the same time none of them are 'impossible' either... it depends on what interests you the most...I personally think Immunology is the most interesting followed by virology.

I think immunology would be interesting.. Id like to get a masters in immunology if it weren't for medicine.. I also think it would be the hardest.

Virology is not that bad... You dont happen to go to UCO??? All of these classes are taught by the same guy there, He is the ****!

I took biology of cancer at tulane last year and it was pretty tough but I liked it because my professor wanted us to learn the newest information out there.. she even threw in a couple of proposed mechanisms and such (although those weren't required to know). regaurdless I thought it was interesting.

Here's my $0.02 worth of thoughts. My university did not offer Biology of Cancer so I'm not able to comment on it. However, our University did offer Immunology I & II and Virology. For me I found that the two courses of Immunology were interesting but were harder than Virology. I spent an average of 5 hrs. per week to study on my own for the immunology courses, whereas Virology I hardly spent more than 1.5 hr. per week for it even though they constituted the same amount of credit hours. Perhaps the difficulty about the Immunology courses is that it was much more in-depth (2 semester of it) and the professor was very picky on his exam.
I would take Immunology as a post-bac since it would be closely related to the medical field and has a much closer relationship in dealing with patients. However, if you're like me and have an interest in infectious diseases and public health among the developing countries, take Virology. I enjoyed this type of lab environment. 😎

At UT, Immunology is harder than Virology. I'm taking Tumor Bio next semester, so no help there. The material is more dense in immunology and also more challenging to understand. I studied more for immunology, too.

As far as med sku goes, I would think that immunology would be the most relevant. Both virology and cancer bio are far too specific and narrow topics, whereas every pathogen - and cancer too - has to come up against our immune system.

At UMCP: Immunology is very difficult but of course, will be a good prep for medical school.
difficulty & study time: Immunology>Virology=Bio of Cancer.

My response is based on my college experience, of course, it might be different from your institution and what you are looking for.
