Quick question--

I ignored most of immuno last year when we had it as part of our micro course, and now that's coming back to bite me in the butt. Anyone have a good recommendation on an immuno review book? Is there a "Immuno Made Ridiculously Simple" book or the like out there? I've got a text book but I need something quicker and more high-yield than slogging through a big textbook.

Thanks. 🙂

this isn't too much of a high-yield book, but i really found janeway's textbook to be good. it's not too huge, it's softcover, and it's just called "immunobiology" and you can get the really thin supplemental case studies book to go with it.

other than that, i have no high-yield suggestions. sorry.

heh-- that's the textbook that i have. i liked it last year for the little bit that i paid attention to the class, but now i want something more high-yield. thanks, though!

I hated Janeway... I hated Abbas... The only thing that got me through immunology was How the Immune System Works. It's not nearly as detailed as the textbooks, but it's a very concise, very high yield book. I read it in a weekend, and I LOVED it. 😍

Good luck with immunology. You couldn't pay me enough to suffer through that class again.

currently in the process of reading "How the Immune System Works." Excellent book and should be all you really need for medical school. HIGHLY recommend it.

We have our immunology midterm this morning over here at UNC. I have a couple'a reviews made by classmates (they're both smart) I can send you if you want.

ohhhhhh...there's a PM coming your way! 😀

You could try out Medical Micro and Immuno, Examination and Board Review. The immuno section is managable, and very good. The book also has tons of practice questions.

I like the Lange book Medical Microbiology & Immunology (examination & board review) by Warren Levinson. I used it as my main source during the course and it has about 80 pages of immuno in it with great diagrams, if you go to the step 1 forums, you'll also find it highly recomended.

I think "How the Immune System Works" by Sompoayrac is an EXCELLENT book. I have read it several times.

Roitt has 3 books
Immunology
Essential Immunology
Really Essential Immunology

They are all very well written and illustrated. I think Really Essential Immunology may suit your needs.

I have Essential Immunology right now. don't like it all. The information is not presented in proper order. The book does not go into enough details.

For example, complement system is presented in the first chapter itself. However, the book fails to underscore that catalysis of C3 breakdown by C3 Convertase is an amplification step. They don't talk about the roles of C7, C8 and C9 until later.

They have so many cross-references that you have to go back and forth while reading the book. I hate that. Besides, too much information is presented in the legends. It makes you feel that you are reading a published article rather than a textbook.

Although, it has excellent information on diseases. The book also has some strengths, but then all books do.

maybe I was overly critical in the last post. My problem is that I have a decent background in immunology, but I feel that there are lot of gaps in what I know. So I try different books to fill those gaps, and none have satisfied me so far.

Another endorsement for "How the Immune System Works". I ain't claiming to be an immuno goddess, but I just read that book and really loved it. I wish I had that guy as a teacher - he clearly loves his subject and makes the subject matter very approachable. I think it's a great overview for the course and gives you an idea of what's going on in the immune system: in lay terms. Getting the Lange book next. Exam's next Friday!

😱

There is a book entitled something like "Immunology" by Peter Parham which I think is great - mostly because of the diagrams. It's a little more detailed than other review books but the diagrams make it worth it. Should be in most libraries.

"High-Yield Immunology" (Lippencott & Williams publishers) was a good basics-review for me this year. Man, if there was one thing I wish someone had told me last year, it would be "Pay attention in immuno!" Talk about getting bitten in the rear repeatedly ... ID, rheum, heme, etc ... I think I've got it straight now, though ...
