Hello everyone! I was just wondering if I could get your thoughts on away rotations. If I am trying to get a particular residency at a particular university, is it recommended that I do an away rotation pertaining to that particular field at the university? Or do most people just do any elective at the university they are trying to match to? Also, how much do away rotations really help? Any tips and advice would be appreciated.

Thanks guys! 😳

1 - Search function is your friend.

2 - It is very specialty and person dependent. If you're 260/260 AOA with all clinical honors and decent research, doing an externship may hurt you. If you barely passed the steps and your courses but think you do well in the clinic, an externship may be beneficial. Also, it is very specialty specific. Some specialties put a ton of weight in externships, others aren't super impressed. The other thing that people use it for is to "express interest" in a certain geographical area, i.e. a student from the SE doing an externship an NYC so that programs know you're "serious" about the area. Talk to someone in your student support office. FWIW, I didn't do an externship.
