I recently received a hand written letter from a program director of a gen surg program that I am somewhat interested in? Does this mean anything at all? His verbage really wasn't like I strongly want you, but more along the lines of if you have further questions, please let me know. Has anyone else been receiving any letters along these lines? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like
1) you're not really in love with the program
2) they're not really in love with you

Just from that standpoint, i wouldn't pay much attention to it.

Secondly, if this is a smaller program that interviews, say, 40 people for 4 spots, it wouldn't be that hard for a PD to write 10 thank you notes after each interview day. (Or even if it's a big program, he could have someone else write the letters - you don't know what his handwriting looks like.) Doubt the letter means anything.

In no way was I trying to be condescending or superior with this post. I actually wanted to see if anyone else had received a letter like this in the past and if it actually meant anything in terms of ranking for the match. If I have offended anyone, I truthfully am sorry. If this post is inappropriate in any way, I would ask that the moderator of the forum please remove it. Once again, I am sorry for this post and I will think again about the sensitivity of the members of this forum before I post again.

Personally, I am so offended. The audacity to ask such a question. Just to think that someone may like you more than they liked me. You are so arrogant... maybe you should get some of that sensitivity training so you can join meet the lowest common denominator like the rest of us.

Seriously, those letters/calls can be an ego boost, but I wouldn't let them sway you too much when making your rank list.

You need to grow a thicker skin. No one was offended. They were just making fun of your n00b question.

Next time: search first, then post. You may still get made fun of for being unable to find old posts on a topic that's been beaten to death on this forum, but at least you'll get some credit for trying.

But you'd get more points for being able to laugh at yourself.
