Just wanted to share some important tips for you new interns/ca1's. Never forget the importance of mentors. Wanted to share a little story about a mentor of mine during my residency that started early in my training. I was a lowly MS4 rotating at an unnamed naval hospital. Tried my best to impress everyone around me by reading and stepping up when asked questions. Happened to meet a CA-2 by the name of PGG. This guy was definitely in to teaching juniors. I tried to take in as much as he wanted to teach and learned a ton. Even gave me board tips and resources to do very well on my boards. I learned so much from that rotation. Flash forward to Intern/CA1 year I busted my butt using the tips given to me by PGG and landed a Chief spot. Did my time as chief and enjoyed it although it was difficult. But back to the story about mentors, you will never know who you will meet that can make a influence on your life so keep your eyes open and work hard.....

Flash back, their was one MS4 that I think I provided some mentorship to whom is now chief BigDan!! So it flows both ways.

Good story. Thanks for sharing. We should all "pay it forward."
I had several mentors who helped me immensely. I asked how I could repay them. They said, "help someone else just like I helped you." I try to be a good steward of that and like to think that the tree created by my mentors has branched immensely as people I have helped have gone on to help others. They are now all much smarter than me, so I occasionally get them to teach me stuff they know that I don't 🙂

Nice note. I owe you a thanks for guiding me. While you and I only worked together for a while, you showed me that you can make a big impact as "only an intern", and that holding yourself to a higher standard than those around you expect will bring good things. Thanks for that.

I followed your lead, and life is residency has, overall, been very good to me.

I, too, will pay it forward!

Funny story. Early in our MS4 years my wife (then girlfriend) and I came out to CCF to do away rotations (I was on SICU and she was on cardiac ICU I think). Part of the reason we went out there for away rotations was to check out the anesthesia and medicine programs there. What really pushed me were several conversations with bigdan (who was an awesome mentor to me as a med student interested in anesthesia), who told me what an awesome experience he had in the SICU at CCF as a visiting med student and how impressed he was.

2 of my wife's seniors on her away rotation in the cardiac ICU? Amyl and narcusprince.

Didn't end up at CCF (couples matched out west), but we did have great months.
