So I have a few questions about rotations and how they affect where you get a residency. I'm interested in a school that has had several grads match at a hospital where I am interested in doing residency eventually. Hypothetically, would it be better to go to this school instead of a slightly more prestigious school that the PD might not be familiar with? Also, how important are LORs from med school rotations done at big teaching hospitals as opposed to smaller, community hospitals? Teaching vs. non-teaching?

Right fromt he mouth of our Dean of Residency Stuff!

Most important in my opinion is how one presents themselves when doing a Sub-I rotation.
Next is more prestigious institution wins .
Next having familiarity with the parent institution.
Next is recommendations (everyone gets good recommendations) More prestigious the better. Best if the person recommending knows the Program director.

You want good 3rd year rotations so you don't suck during your 4th year electives. Youll most likely receive your letters from your electives, not your core rotations. I had 4 letters when I applied to residency. One was from a surgeon on my surgery core rotation at a community hospital and the remaining 3 were from attendings at university programs that I rotated through during my 4th year.
