I am wanting to specialize in OMS or ortho. I know those are hard to get in to. I keep hearing that class rank and board scores are the most important thing. Thats what i heard about entering dental school, except it was gpa and dat. I had a 3.6 gpa and 24 dat, research, xtracurr, but didnt even get waitlisted to florida, my alma mater or alabama, my state resident and school where my sister attends. It was obviously my interview that screwed me bad. I fixed that problem, however, when my late interview for maryland came around. i knew maryland was my only chance so i beefed up for the interview(practiced with my pops, wrote notes, etc). They accepted me a week after the interview and the dean told me i was the top person on the list to choose from.
So as far as my question, does anyone think a great interview is still an extremely important factor for residency (considering the fact that you dont bomb dental school or the boards, but didnt get top notch)? Will it be different for different programs? (Univ of Mich ortho (great program)compared to jacksonville univ ortho(which is a small independent program not even affiliated with a dental school?) Or are they all equally selective?

just do as well as you can.. you have 3 long years to go b4 even applying so don't worry about anything like that for now

You need the scores (boards, gpa, rank) to get your foot in the door for the interview. Then it's up to you.

well since you asked for specific class rank, i'd say the general consensus is Top 10% for ortho, and slightly worse for OMFS.

agreed?

thanks guys! yea that makes sense about getting your foot in the door.
