Ok, this may be a little long, but I am really looking for some advice here and it would be extremely appreciated. So, heres my situation. My official major is Nursing. I dropped out of the 2nd chem course I had last semmester and found out I could take one of the Pre-med chem courses instead of it (so essentially killing 2 birds with one stone). Since I am behind, I will be applying to nursing school one semmester late. My question is, should I just take both semmesters and knock out most of my pre-med pre reqs, and then apply to Nursing school or do it after? I am afraid that if I take 1 of the chem courses now, I will forget all of it when I take it again.....

I was a Nursing major as well but i recently switched to biology, not only to better prepare me for MCAT, but because some of the upper lever electives just interested me more(Biological forensic analysis....blood splatter patterns fingerprints......)Also because it was just going to be more work for something i wouldn't use 5 years from now.

That being said, i had already taken all of my nursing pre-reqs before the switch and then had to essentially retake my bio and chem at higher levels for my BIO major. I found that even though these were higher lever classes, it helped that i already had seen the material recently. So in my opinion it helped doing both. Then again if you still are going with the Nursing it is going to be double the work since you haven't done any yet.

I wouldn't necessarily do it if you had the choice/chance not to, im just saying my situation didn't work out too bad for me.

Thanks for the advice...I mean I don't mind applying to Nursing school a year late, I just want to get my pre med courses done and get them done right.

Thats want i wanted to do first as well. Then i though well, why dont i just put all my effort in going to medical school and do a good job at it the first time so i dont NEED anything to fall back on. I mean If need be and if i end up not making it, i alreasy have most of my nursing prereqs. I mean im already planning on 4 more years of schooling + residency, whats another 2 years to bcome a nurse if i dont make it ya know?

So for right now im just wholeheartedly going for medicine. Just a thought.

Besides, its not like you will really be able to use your RN license while in medical school if you do make it ya know?

Very true, but we don't have a dedicated "pre-med" program here, so i went with Nursing... Should I do something else?

At my school, the paths are very different. Premeds are mostly biology and chemistry majors who take a ton of science classes in preparation for the MCAT. Since they're also usually associated with a science department, there is greater opportunity to do research and get to know professors who can write science LOR.

Nursing majors begin as pre-nursing and take lower level general chemistry, no ochem, no physics, and only a few biology courses. After taking a set of pre-requisites that are generally completed in 1.5-2 years, students apply to the nursing program. Acceptance is fairly competitive and based almost entirely on GPA. Once a student has been accepted the program generally takes 3 years to complete. The courses are science based, but they're also more applied science/"science in practice".

From what I've seen, I have no doubt that nursing majors here are acquiring the training necessary to become good nurses. The problem I see with this route to medical school is the extra year and the lack of "hard" science classes that you need for the MCAT. No one can make your decision for you, but it will probably take you a significantly longer time to go this route, especially after taking the classes necessary to succeed on the MCAT.
