I am a freshman that attends a small private college in Florida. Looking round the forum, I have noticed people suggesting that you should take the DAT the summer before your junior year. I am assuming the courses I should take are Bio 1&2, Chem 1&2 , Organic 1&2, and a few upper level courses. But here's my issue, my school makes you take certain pre-reqs before they allow you to take these science classes. For instance before I can take chem 1 I have to take calculus or before I take Org 1 I have to take chem 2 , bio 2, and Calc . With the remedial class they put me in, I wont have all the pre-reqs done to take bio 1 and chem 1 until fall of my sophomore year. Which means I wont be done with Organic 2 until the end of Junior year. So i figure i have two options:

1. I can take Bio 1 and Chem 1 next fall, and end up taking the DAT the summer before my senior year (in July), and then applying to school right after that.

2. Transfer to a state college (not university, it was a community college 3 years ago but some how turned into state college) this summer, take bio 1 and chem 1 and a few other classes. Then in the fall take bio 2 and chem 2 , and then hopefully I can take Org 1 and some other classes my spring semester. That way I can study for the DAT, and take it the summer before my junior year. After that I plan on transferring to a Public university my junior to take some upper division university.

I really don't know what to do am I approaching this the wrong way, I need opinions. 😕

I took the dat at the beginning of summer going into my senior year. Having taken all the prereqs and then taking the dat helped me a ton. Studying for it was easier because I surprisingly remembered a lot from my classes. I'd recommend taking it after you've taken the classes. even if you do bad the first time, you still have time in the summer to take it again and still submit your application early! There's no need to transfer to a different school and cram all these classes in your schedule to try to take the dat junior year...if I can do it, you definitely can!

+1

I also took my DAT in the summer before senior year (and applying). In fact, most of my friends did the same... so you're not alone!! 🙂

I took my DAT the same year I applied. Once I finished my finals, I submitted my app, and then I had a hair over 3 weeks to study. I took my DAT on July 8th. This was still plenty early for getting interviews. Your good to go 👍

FSC or Southeastern? I also took the DAT the summer before my senior year, while I was applying. It works out.

I took the DAT summer before senior year and I got in Dec 1... I don't see the need to take it so early because you won't apply until your senior year anyway. I'd recommend planning on taking it in April or May in the summer before senior year so that your scores can be finalized and ready to go when you submit your application in June. Good luck...
