Hello

I am a senior at a liberal arts college (tier 1) majoring Neuroscience. I currently have a 2.74 GPA and a BCPM of 2.57. I have a D in Orgo2 and Biochemistry. I expect a 2.9 overall GPA and a BCPM of 2.68 by the time I graduate. I haven't taken the MCATs but will dedicate this winter break and next semester to it to get above 30.

I have volunteered in the ER room. I volunteer now as an EMT on the campus EMS squad. I will be shadowing a surgeon next semester. I am greatly involved in the local church, teaching kids and carrying out tasks.

I wish to do VCU's SMP and then matriculate into their medical school. I have been looking into Drexel and Tufts as well.

My question here, is whether I have a chance to any of the SMPs and then successful matriculation into med school despite my low BCPM. Should I do a 5th year taking higher level courses, or should I just push through? Thank you so much.

gotta sleep now...

depending on your mcat and your recent grades, an SMP may be a good way to get into medical school. you're asking for some honest feedback, but you really should make a honest evaluation of yourself. enrolling in an SMP is no walk in the park. you are working as hard or arguably harder than medical students. while they need to pass their classes, you need to high pass or honor them. doing mediocre in an SMP is an APP-killer, so you need to be absolutely sure you are ready.

your chances of getting into an SMP depends on your mcat score. they are typically geared to high mcat low gpa folk.

also, though it's not an absolute requirement, many people recommend raising your GPA to a 3.0 cum before applying to SMPs and med schools.
