I'm looking at applying to various post bacc programs along the east coast, but I'm not really sure what schools I should be aiming for with my mediocre existing science GPA.

My first semester of college was terrible and I ended up failing Chemistry I and Physics I, from there my GPA increased every semester (and I retook Chemistry I, receiving an A this time) and I graduated with a cGPA 3.4 (without the replacement) and sGPA a teeny tiny bit over 3.0.

With my somewhat troublesome academic record, where would you suggest I apply? I'm currently looking into schools in the DC and NY area, but any advice is welcome!!

Thanks!

How many other BCPM (biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics) classes have you taken?

I've taken Bio I, Calc I-III, Diff EQ, Linear Algebra, and Stats.

Since you haven't completed most of your prereqs, you might consider a "formal" or "structured" program for career-changers. Other than that, it really doesn't matter where you do your post-bacc as long as it's a 4-year college.

But you haven't retaken Physics yet, correct? If your Science GPA is at 3.0 with 36 science credits (by my estimate) the remaining 5 courses (Physics 2, Orgo 1 and 2, Bio 2) alone won't be enough to get it where it needs to be. I'd look into a program that allows you to take both the MCAT/Med School pre-reqs and some upper level science electives.

Keep in mind: a lot of programs prefer students who haven't taken any of the "big 8" before, so you'll have to look out for that.

What programs have you looked into so far?

Right, I haven't retaken Physics.. yet. So far I've been looking into American U & Georgetown's post bacc programs (mostly because I'm living in the area). I'm just worried that a failed Physics course may even screen me out of getting into a traditional post bacc program.

Also, would you suggest that I retake Physics I before starting a post bacc program?

I just don't know . . . On one hand, a good post-bacc will be hesitant to accept you if you've failed two of your required science courses; I know you've retaken one of them, but an F is an F, at least when it comes to MD schools.

One the other, if you retake it, and earn an A (which you have to), it may help to show new found respect and dedication to your coursework.

The answer to this question is beyond me - I'm sure one of the more experienced posters on this board can help you more.

Anyone else willing to share their thoughts? 🙂
