i recently found out that i have to take an in service exam in july, my first month as an anesthesiology resident. any advice on preparing for this?
...not that i have time between internship and my usmle step 3 in 1 month.
whats the deal with testing us so early? anybody have any experiences with this exam? does anybody study for this first in-service? you get my point.

I have to do the same thing.(starting CA1 this july also) My understanding is that this initial test is used to gauge your progress as you learn. Im reading but not specifically for this test.

Study your butt off for it.

Will you elaborate? At my program they specifically state that we take an inservice the first day then at the 6 month then at the 12 month. What is the importance of the first exam on everything as we progress?

we took it every July while in residency. it's the actual board exam for that year so it's good in that it gives you an idea of what the real test is like. also use it to gauge your improvement from year to year and give you a heads up on what you need to focus on.

the AKT is a different test that is taken at 1mo, 6mos and 18 mos after starting residency. use it for the same thing but definitely don't be "cramming" for these tests. remember, you should be studying as you go along so the boards are cake by the time you're there! 😀

Daredevil is being sarcastic.

atleast from every interview/rotation i've been....they all have to take this test the moment they get there. like ppl have said, it's only used to 'gauge' one's performance.

my suggestion is to study for it. your score will get around to all the attendings and you will get a good reputation early. Most attendings will judge you early and it will stick for three years. Just read a basic text in the spring and then week before the test

just curious, are you serious? I mean ppl at your program did this? if so what program?

Of course, I'm just talking about from my limited experience doing away rotations (3 diff places) and during interview, and I had NEVER heard this. That's why I ask. I never heard of an attending passing judgements so early in the game...i mean shoot, one's just coming out of medicine/surgery/TY...the expectation of knowing anesthesiology is 😎

You JUST found out you need to take it as a CA-1???

you caught me.

seriously, i recently found out the date is in july. for example, surgery residents take the absite in january, so they have 6 months to study after they start their specialty. more importantly, its really hot in july and i can't think well during this month.

okay...its a gauge of where we stand or whatever. do your best and study, obviously. i agree that faculty can be judgemental early and its important to get a good start. that being said...

does anybody know of any high yield or popular study resources?

thanks peeps.

Yes I am serious.

If you do well on the July test and the in-service you will impress people.

Getting a 97 definitely helped me be taken seriously. Now if you do terrible it doesn’t mean you will get a bad reputation as long as every one sees you working hard.

My point is just to make sure you work hard in the beginning because people are quick to judge you. If they see you staying late every night in July and offering to stay late so others can go home, if they see you are coming extra early to make sure your room is ready you will get a nice reputation and it will make your life easier for the rest of you residency

At the University of Chicago, we take this as INTERNS as well... I was about 1.5 wks into my intern year trying to answer questions about oil:gas coefficients of anesthetic gases. It was awesome. A good hunk of it is "medicine," not specifically anesthesiology, though, so you'll get some of them right.

I come in early pretty much every day but the first time I see an attending is about 7:15 am as I push the induction drugs. They really don't know what time I get there, and I don't think they really care so long as everything is all ready.

I found out that I have to take the in-service exam in the second week of my PGY-1 year of prelim. med.!!

does anyone know how the MGH question book is for AKT 1?
