This is true, the market is correcting...hospital pays 375-450/hr + travel etc for a locums...eventually get some bad locums/bad outcomes, surgeons go berserk and blame admin.
Although I disagree that it's a bad job, if it's 374k thats about 350/hr but that's consistent (ie no traveling, finding new gigs that can be annoying doing locums) but it all depends on the benefits. Having something consistent with adequate time off is the key, can go do locums for 400-550/hr (yes, that's still around if you know how to negotiate, unfortunately most people don't)
Hospitals really pay $500-550/hr for locums and the agency takes 30% cut of that

As for the 14 on/14 off. The nights are a premium pay/coverage unless they give u 2 crnas are night so you can sleep all night.

You want easy work, easy pay in this market. You don’t want to be over working yourself for what amounts to average pay and tied to employers rigid schedule.

So the devil is in the details

I dunno. 7a-7p sucks also if u doing 84 hrs a week.
Rather just do 3 (24) every other day etc get it over with.

But if it’s 7p-7a in house without crna that’s horrible deal. Need to find the details.

is Op trying to find a good w2 job in Austin? Not a lot of good (to my liking) opportunities in Austin. I sent out some feelers very quiet on the mass texting I do.

Any details you're willing to share?
1. Youre looking at a city that is very popular among young adults with increasing CoL.
Young adults are not usually chronic pain patients. Its the smallest metro out of the big 4 cities but more docs per 100k citizens.

2. Combine that with the fact that you have one of the largest pain groups (Advanced Pain Care) with their 40 docs and 10 pain clinics in the region as well as private equity (PSA, Capitol, Pain Partners, Tricity, etc.)

You can definitely practice in Austin as patients do bounce around, but you will be making less than other cities. Think like 350-400k. APC is recruiting for around 500-550k but I heard its not a great place to work.

I don’t think the op is looking for pain jobs

Anyways the op said they are “willing to move anywhere to maximize their earnings”.

Which is strange to ask about Austin. If they willing to move anywhere There are plenty of places in the upper Midwest to maximize their earnings year in and year out.

So clearly the op isn’t willing to move anywhere

What do chronic pain patients have to do with the general anesthesia market? This is not the pain forum

my Bad. Lets rephrase.

1. Youre looking at a city that is very popular among young career adults with increasing CoL. Supply > Demand. NAPA and USAP have a very large presence here so PE is eating off your hard work. I interviewed a few years ago and the USAP guys were saying that they were getting paid a competitive '250-275/hr'. This was 3 years ago.

2. You can definitely practice in Austin as patients do bounce around, but you will be making less than other cities. Think like 450-500k. NAPA/USAP is recruiting. Conversely you can do 2 weeks/month of locums in another city and fly back to enjoy 2 weeks off in Austin or do PRN work.

I don’t see any locums work for Austin proper. I still don’t know what the OP wants even after one year. Do they want locums? Or full time?

There are plenty of full time w2 work in almost any city/suburb area including Austin.

Like you tell me ur objective is to find a locums gig 73 days a year paying around 10k per 24 hr call. That’s 730k for 73 days of work. You can get that but it’s fleeting. Meaning I can get u 2 full 3 day weekends a month at 30k per 72 hr weekend. But that gig will only last maybe 3 months as the wolves and the pack move in on the kill also.

Money is very fleeting in locums

Full time w2 work is easy to get.

So for Op. what is their agenda?

I mean do 2 weeks locums somewhere else and then come back to the city to do PRN work. NAPA was looking at St. Davids for 375/hr

Marit has it benchmarked at 570K
MGMA has it at 590K median.

450K is for idiots and academics.
It all goes down to workload. My w2 salary is 500k.

Guess I’m the idiot. 3 of the docs do zero to extra work at my place. They are happy. Very happy.

But it all comes down to the details to achieve that 450k and time off.

The devil is all in the details.

So you may want to qualify
“They are idiots” if they work for 42-44 weeks a year with one weekend requirement and q4/5 beeper call for 450k. Yes. Absolutely I don’t think it’s wise to do that work schedule

I don’t like to travel out to town for work anymore. Have not done 1099 work out of a 2 hr radius since kids were born.

I don’t know if you have a family or not. If you are single no kids or empty nester. Absolutely chase the money and fly in and out. But even childless couples miss companionship.

So there is a balancing act.

my comment is in response to sevo's 'average w2', implying average/median work hours and call burden when looking at the comp number.
