Does anybody know what constitutes being a state resident? My family has moved around just enough to confuse everyone. Here's a little history...

1998-2005: My parents lived in Tennessee
2004-Now: I have been living in Omaha attending Creighton undergrad
2005-Now: My parents have been living in Utah (approx. 2 yrs.)

What state do I belong to!?!?

oy... tough call...

are they military by any chance?? I think that if you are military you belong to every state that you lived in... If you are still a dependant and your primary residence is still with your parents (they pay taxes and claim you)... then you are a Utah resident. If you work and pay taxes then you are Nebraska... Either way you have strong ties to Tennesse, so you may not be in the "in state" pile, but you should mention something to those schools stating that you do have strong ties because that will bump you up significantly (again not to instate status, but higher than out of state)... Now, which ever state you are NOT a legal resident of, is the state that you have strong ties to, meaning family or college. So you are really in a good position!!

Anyone correct me if I don't have my facts totally straight or if you can explain it so that it is not as confusing!!

GL:luck:

no, you nailed it! thanks for your input.

I am applying to TN, and I want to be considered a resident, b/c I dumped nine years of residency there.

But if we are going on my parents (who moved to Utah while I was attending college, and seeing that I am a dependent) then I must be a Utah resident now.

However, I have two jobs here in Omaha, obviously I pay taxes here and have lived here for going on four years, and my vehicle is also registered here (i dont even know if this means anything)....

So, Creighton has a state contract with Utah, and I attended undergrad at Creighton...
I am kinda a nebraska resident to add on top (but its a private school so shouldnt matter), so pretty good backing...

But I would kind of like to get back to TN at some point, hopefully I made this clear in the personal statement.

Thats why I ask 🙂

Which state did you graduate high school in? I just found out that even though I haven't lived in NE for the last 17 years, I'm still considered a resident there (for admissions purposes) b/c I graduated from a high school there. I don't know if all public dental schools use the same rules for this, but if you graduated in TN you could be a resident there as well.

yes, i graduated in TN, thanks for the reply

Creighton should favor an alum over all others since it is a private school. UN Lincoln will most likely require a demonstration of residency with paperwork. Everywhere else, you'll be out of state. You should get good application consideration at two schools. I would say you are in good shape. Don't worry about the paperwork for residency until it shows up in the mail. Just keep indicating that your are a resident everywhere else.
