So I have a question regarding how they qualify in-state vs. out-of-state when applying. On the AMCAS you put your preferred and your permanent residence down and the permanent one is what counts as your residency when applying. So, what is to stop someone from just saying they are from any state of their choice in order to get the benefit of applying to a school that takes only in-state residents? AMCAS said they don't verify anything and I called some of my local schools and they said they only verify it when it comes to giving you in-state tuition. I'm a little confused as to how this works so if anyone knows more on if/how schools verify it prior to offering you acceptance (I'm not talking about verifying it post-acceptance to determine if they give you the tuition decrease).

So does nobody have the answer to this one? I understand it's a unique question, but the whole process seems odd to me.

I’m not sure what you even want to know.
How schools verify that you are a resident of the state when looking at your application or if they even do. Most schools will say they give your application more leniency if they are a public school and you are from their state. However, the only information I can find is that whatever permanent address you put into your AMCAS application is where you will be considered a resident and that is what is sent to the schools. So, what is to stop someone from claiming they are from another state in order to get the benefit of taking an IS seat? The schools said they verify residency when it comes to offering in-state vs out-of-state tuition, but at that point you would have already secured a seat. So, is there another method of verifying that what you put on the AMCAS is true?

Just put where your permanent residence is. Where you live. Your personal home address. Don’t bother trying to BS anyone.
This isn't about my trying to change my residency, I'm trying to figure out how they prevent other people from doing it.

Well you do have to verify on AMCAS that everything in your application is truthful. So if it’s not AMCAS could level penalties and schools certainly have the right to rescind your acceptance. So there is that.,,

Yeah I figured that, but what happens in a scenario when someone doesn't think they are lying. I.e. you move somewhere and write you are a resident but you didn't actually qualify for the residency yet (that you were unaware of). Are they still going to take away your acceptance and give it to a true resident? I'm not looking to "cheat" the system in any way, I'm perfectly happy with my state residence, but when calling to make sure I would still qualify as a resident while away at school and working I started wondering how they handle these situations and I couldn't find any real answer anywhere.

I am actually in a very similar situation to this. I grew up and went to high school and college (private) in California, but I am moving in late April to Oregon for work. I plan to apply in June for 2019 matriculation. I don't really intend on coming back to California, although my parents live here. I'm financially independent and filed 2017-2018 taxes in California, but will be filing my 2018-2019 taxes in Oregon since I will be working there full time there. I'm a couple years out of college and would not consider my parent's house my "permanent address" since I haven't lived there since high school. Don't know if I should put California or Oregon as my permanent address.

My home state required a lot of documentation from both me and my parents before sending an interview invite

May I ask if you're in-state at Oregon? I was planning to apply to OHSU but I won't if they don't consider me in-state (since they heavily favor IS)

I'm not - since this probably varies by state the fastest way to get an answer is to call the office and ask how they verify residency

1) While you note your state of legal residence on the AMCAS, the applicant guide clearly says that you may qualify for legal residency in more than one state. Therefore, it is not used by the schools for the final determination of of residency
2) Even so, misrepresention on AMCAS with your affirmation could be deemed ethical violation and get you banned by AMCAS
3) residency considerations for admissions vary by state and school. Thus applicants need to be clear in secondaries on connection or residency to state. And you will sign that the information offerred is true
4) after you have taken up an offer of acceptance, the school will verify most of your applicant in depth during pre-matriculation. This will confirm your residency status for admission and tuition which may be two different standards
5) you can easily have acceptance rescinded for misrepresentation of your residency
Okay that makes sense. I didn't know about the part in the secondaries where you have to clarify it. Thanks!
