So I noticed that UPMC was a bit inbred this year. 9 students went into anesth. at UPitt and 6 stayed at home. 4 of the 6 advanced positions went to Pitt students. That seems rather inbred to me. Which other programs have a rep for doing that? I know that Indiana keeps a good # of their students. Why the hell do you spend all the money on interviewing if you're just gonna keep all your own students??? Vent over. 😡

Sorry it sounds like you didn't get a residency you were very interested in. 🙁

It is a reality of business that companies -- and residency programs -- always tend to hire people they already know and like. Anyone who has spent time there and has shown strong interest, and worked well with the people there, has a slight advantage over those who don't and just come to interview for a day.

agreed. we took three med students (out of eleven) this year for pgy-1/ca-0 spots, and offered a additional local graduate a contract (who matched into a different anesthesia program last year) a pgy-2/ca-1 this year after she completes her internship at our local medicine program. last year we took four students from the graduating class.

known entities are better than unknown ones. otherwise, going through the match process is like agreeing to marry someone after the first date.
